Chapter 121 A Late-Night Cry for Help (1/2)

Chapter 121 A Cry for Help in the Dead of Night

It started snowing heavily in the middle of the night, and by the end of the night, a thick layer of snow had accumulated at the door.

Early in the morning, Gu Zuozuo, wearing a cotton-padded coat and a Lei Feng hat, began to sweep the snow around the house with a shovel and broom in her hand.

Looking out, the towering mountains were now covered in snow, their verdant green shrouded in white, and the whole world was a silvery white.

"Chirp chirp..."

The fox, which looked like a snowball, plunged headfirst into the snow and rolled around, kicking up a flurry of snowflakes.

"Sister Gu! My uncle and I are here to help you!"

Ma Liang's energetic voice rang out from outside the gate, and then two figures wearing military overcoats walked in.

Ma Jingjun actually came back?

"Sister Gu, Grandma said you'd like to come to my house for dinner today! Grandma made your favorite big bone stew."

Because of the good nutrition they've received in recent years, thirteen- or fourteen-year-old boys have grown very tall, and their voices have started to deepen during puberty.

Only those eyes remained bright and clear when they looked at Gu Zuozuo.

Ma Jingjun was a man of few words. After arriving, he simply nodded and greeted everyone before burying himself in his work.

He has returned to his original unit and I heard he was promoted. He's been doing quite well these past few years.

Ma Liang quietly approached Gu Zuozuo and whispered gossip about his uncle to her.

"I heard from my grandma that my uncle was chased away by a girl, so he had no choice but to take leave to go home for the New Year."

Gu Zuozuo glanced at Ma Jingjun, who was engrossed in his work, with surprise.

He perfectly fits the standards that girls of this era look for in a man.

Rugged and handsome, tall and long-legged, and a soldier wearing four bags—no wonder he's popular.

But just based on his upright and unyielding spirit, and his incorruptible nature, how fierce must that girl be to be chased and hide at home?

Ma Jingjun became increasingly uncomfortable under her scrutiny. His ears, hidden under his hat, turned bright red, whether from embarrassment or the cold wind, it was hard to tell.

"What are you two looking at me for? Get back to work!"

The two, one big and one small, looked at each other, chuckled a few times, and hurried to shovel snow.

Gu Zuozuo never expected that she would see that girl that very night, just after talking about her during the day.

While sound asleep, Gu Zuozuo heard messy footsteps outside and was instantly awakened. The vines burst out of the ground and hovered at the door, eager to try.

"Gu Zhiqing, open the door quickly!"

The familiar voice made her lower her guard, and she let the vines climb up the wall and onto the roof beam, where they remained motionless.

Gu Zuozuo casually threw on a cotton-padded coat and opened the door.

Outside the door, Ma Jingjun hurriedly walked in carrying a figure wrapped in a quilt, followed by Ma Liang and Grandma Ma holding flashlights, with two tall figures supporting them.

Gu Zuozuo frowned, glanced at the familiar figure, and looked puzzled.

"Si Jue?"

Shouldn't this guy be at the research institute? How did he end up here?

Si Jue smiled and waved silently, revealing her dimples.

“Gu Zhiqing, look at her.”

Ma Jingjun untied the quilt, revealing a woman inside with a bluish-purple face.

"Frostbite?"

He reached out and carefully examined her pulse.

"Where did she come from? She just had surgery and she's already running around like this, doesn't she have a death wish?"

After saying that, he left Grandma Ma behind and chased the men out, leaving Grandma Ma to begin administering acupuncture.

"Girl, how is she?"

Grandma Ma glanced at the woman lying unconscious on the kang (a heated brick bed), her expression anything but pleasant.

Gu Zuozuo put away the last needle, fed her a pill, and then got up.

"It's alright. She probably just had surgery not long ago, so her blood and qi are insufficient. In addition, she was a little overworked and cold got into her body, which is why she's like this. She should wake up tomorrow."

Gu Zuozuo glanced at Grandma Ma's displeased expression, then at the pale-faced woman on the bed, and wisely refrained from asking further questions. She then called over the men outside.

"She's alright now, she'll wake up tomorrow. Do you want to leave her here or take her with you? If you take her, I'll prepare the medicine for you, and you can brew it at home yourselves."

Ma Jingjun wiped his face, his brows furrowed tightly.
