Chapter 73: Ma Su with a Clear Purpose (2/2)

Every single day is a problem!

"Gu, you educated youth! Stop working! Someone's been bitten by a snake!"

Gu Zuozuo straightened up, sighed, washed the mud off her legs, and quickened her pace toward the brigade leader.

After the two men left, the remaining women started gossiping and whispering. As they talked, the conversation turned to the person who had been bitten by a snake, and the topic became increasingly bizarre.

"What? A snake bit someone?"

"What did you say? Someone was bitten by a snake and died?"

"What? Someone killed a snake?"

By the time I finished work and went home at noon, the rumor had changed to someone swallowing a live snake.

The boy who was bitten was about seven or eight years old. He was covered in dirt and was crying and catching his breath. His trouser leg had been rolled up, revealing two black and purple teeth marks.

"How did you get bitten by a snake?"

The woman holding her child angrily twisted her son's ear, looking as if she wanted to give him a good beating.

"This brat was bored and went to raid a rabbit hole, but he was too weak and got bitten by a snake, which happened to be a venomous one."

Gu Zuozuo checked his wound, and while he was still crying loudly in his mother's arms, she took out her dagger, made a cross-shaped cut, squeezed out the poisoned blood, and then gave him a few injections to clean up the remaining poison before she breathed a sigh of relief.

"It's alright now. The snake that bit him was a 'soil viper,' scientifically known as a Ussuri viper, also called a 'grass flyer,' or a 'seven-inch snake.' This kid was just unlucky. These snakes only come out of hibernation in May, and as soon as they came out of their burrows, they ran into you, who was blocking their doorway. Who else would they bite if not you?"

"Sister-in-law, these are antidote pills. Take two a day, and you'll be fine in two days."

As she spoke, she reached out and ruffled the boy's hair, then, as if by magic, took the candy off his head and opened it, revealing two candies inside.

The boy named Gousheng stared wide-eyed in surprise, and a big snot bubble popped out of his nose, making everyone laugh.

"From now on, don't dig into every hole you see. Rabbit burrows usually have small entrances, grass, and rabbit droppings. Make sure you're careful before you dig."

With the sweet candy in his mouth, the boy nodded emphatically in agreement to what the person who gave him the candy said.

He deftly pulled out the silver needles and put them into his needle case. He then disinfected them again. Looking at the captain who was still hesitant to speak, he raised an eyebrow, knowing exactly what the captain was up to.

Duan Jianhua rubbed his hands together with a smile, looking at Gu Zuozuo, this flower that had bloomed in the field of educated youth, and he was overjoyed.

"Gu, it's time to register for the barefoot doctor training program. I've registered you, and you can go to the county for training tomorrow. However, you'll be gone for a week, and when you come back, you'll be a legitimate barefoot doctor in our team!"

Gu Zuozuo smiled slightly; she loved their captain's off-the-charts confidence.

"Aren't you afraid I won't be selected?"

"How could that be? If even you can't be selected, then wouldn't everyone else have made a wasted trip?"

"The captain speaks so kindly, thank you for your kind words."

When Gu Zuozuo went to the county for training, no one in the village's educated youth settlement objected. They were convinced of her abilities, whether in medicine or other areas. They had no choice but to accept it, since they couldn't beat or scold her.
