Chapter 4 Homecoming

Meng Yuanzheng didn't get to eat the corn, and he stood under the eaves looking a bit pitiful, like a big fool.

He was still wearing the pair of leather shoes.

When Lin Miaoyin opened her eyes, she saw that he had one bare foot. She didn't know whether he went into the water again to fish out his leather shoes.

Lin's mother and Cui Fen were cooking in the kitchen and did not notice that Meng Yuanzheng did not eat the corn.

After a while, when the sun was setting, Lin Miaoyin took a rattle made of split bamboo and shook it. There was a crackling sound, and the three hens heard the sound and automatically returned to the coop.

Father Lin and elder brother Lin Miaojun also came back. They washed their hands with water from the well and went to their private plots to pick some crisp cucumbers to eat.

Meng Yuanzheng looked at the two of them quietly for a few seconds, then walked up to them and took the initiative to greet them, "Dad, big brother."

Father Lin hummed lightly and sat on the stone mill smoking his pipe, while Lin Miaojun ignored him.

Meng Yuanzheng didn't feel embarrassed. He pursed his lips and continued to stand under the eaves in a daze.

The more he acted like a troublemaker, the more Lin Miaoyin felt that he had a conspiracy.

Lin's father and Lin Miaojun also heard from Lin's mother that Lin Miaoyin wanted to divorce. Although they didn't like Meng Yuanzheng, they did not approve of divorce.

Father Lin felt that since his daughter was right under his nose, her family should take better care of her and not let Meng Yuanzheng bully her again. After this incident, Meng Yuanzheng could no longer be a teacher and had to go back to school.

If he doesn't do his job well, it would be easy for him, as the team leader, to make things difficult for him.

We’ll see if he’s honest then?

During the meal, Lin Miaoyin asked, "Dad, brother, how does the secretary decide to deal with this matter?"

"What is it?"

"Meng Yuanzheng and Zhang Hui were having an affair. And Zhang Hui pushed me into it. I heard from my sister-in-law that you decided not to punish Meng Yuanzheng?"

"You're a girl, why do you keep saying these things all the time?" Lin's mother put down her chopsticks and glared at her.

Lin Miaoyin's expression remained unchanged. "I am responding to the call of the country. We cannot allow these corrupt and degenerate ideas to grow. We must resolutely crack down on them."

The decadent and corrupt Meng Yuanzheng lowered his head and quietly ate the sweet potato porridge in the bowl, as if the person being talked about was not him.

Father Lin coughed lightly and said, "The secretary and I have our own arrangements for this matter."

This kind of thing happened in the brigade he managed, and it happened to two educated youths. If it got out, it would not be good for his reputation. Since nothing substantial happened between Meng Yuanzheng and Zhang Hui, it would be better to make a big deal out of a small matter and let Meng Yuanzheng reflect on it. After all, he was his son-in-law, and he saved Miaoyin, so he could make amends for his mistakes. As for Zhang Hui, she could not escape the crime of intentional injury, so she should be punished.

Father Lin briefly explained his thoughts. Lin Miaoyin felt that it was a pity that Meng Yuanzheng could not be paraded through the streets, but she also knew that this would not work. After all, Father Lin would not want to have a son-in-law who was accused.

After dinner, the two were "driven" out by Lin's mother. Lin's mother believed that if the couple fought at the head of the bed, they would make up at the foot of the bed, so if they slept in the same bed, maybe everything would be fine by tomorrow morning.

Lin Miaoyin wanted to say that she had a headache and act coquettishly and stay at her parents' house, but Lin's mother not only disagreed, but also said that since she had a headache, let Yuanzheng carry her back.

Seeing Meng Yuanzheng really coming over and preparing to carry her, she quickly said that she could walk by herself.

Niutouwan Brigade is poor, with only a small part of the land being paddy fields. Most of the land is hilly with steep slopes, which is not suitable for growing rice. The only land they can grow is corn, peanuts, and soybeans. Because of soil erosion and poor fertility, the yield is not high.

The rice today is not the hybrid rice of later generations, and the chemical fertilizers are not as good as those of later generations, so the yield is also low.

Only the secretary's office in the brigade had electricity; even the brigade leader's home still used kerosene lamps.

When Lin Miaoyin and her husband got married, Lin's father applied to the team to renovate a dilapidated house and use it as their new home. This was only possible because of connections. If it were other families with many sons, they would still have to sleep on one kang after getting married.

When Meng Yuanzheng first arrived, he lived in the educated youth dormitory, which was actually a large bunk bed for more than a dozen people.

The family backgrounds of the educated youth varied greatly. Some were used to living there, while others were not. For example, where did Meng Yuanzheng live before? It's a Western-style house, a single room. Now, at night, I'm surrounded by snoring. When I lift the quilt, the air is filled with the smell of feet. And when I'm sleeping, I'm hit in the face by the arm of the person next to me.

Before I fell asleep, I was woken up by the sound of shouting. The leader of the educated youth team called me to go to work!

For meals, he only had dry steamed buns with pickles, porridge thick enough to reflect one's reflection in it, and sweet potatoes. He really wanted to eat meat and fine grains, but when other educated youth went to the countryside, their families would send them some food and meat coupons from time to time. His family was already overwhelmed by his father's affairs, so how could they take care of him?

He was going crazy. After two weeks, he lost ten pounds, felt unsteady when he walked, and even dreamed about eating meat when he slept.

When working in the fields, they were not allowed to lift anything with their hands or carry anything with their shoulders. If they stopped to rest, they would be scolded by the supervisor and laughed at by other educated youth.

Later, he was assigned to carry manure. His rubber shoes sprained his ankle, and he carried a load of manure with great effort. In the end, he fell, smelled of manure, and was scolded. After that, he felt that he could not hold on any longer, and he must find a way to change the status quo. Later, he set his sights on the original owner.

This was mentioned in the original work, so Lin Miaoyin knew this part.

It was already getting dark. In order to save kerosene, every household had finished their work early and went to bed. The two of them walked home in the dark.

Lin Miaoyin was in front and Meng Yuanzheng was behind. Neither of them spoke. Lin Miaoyin put her hands in her pockets. When she thought of Meng Yuanzheng right behind her, she felt uncomfortable all over.

She walked back home in silence, entered the small courtyard where they lived, pushed open the wooden door, and in the faint moonlight, she felt in her pocket, took out the key, and finally opened the rusty lock after a long time. When she entered the house, she smelled a damp and cold breath.

The room was dark. She lit the kerosene lamp on the table according to her memory. She turned around and saw that Meng Yuanzheng was not following her.

To be honest, it was quite scary when the person behind her suddenly disappeared late at night. She went out and heard some noise in the kitchen. She walked closer and saw Meng Yuanzheng squatting there fiddling with something.

"What are you doing?"

"Boil some hot water and take a bath."

He scooped a ladle of cold water into the pot, washed the pot, shoveled it out, took out a match, very solemnly lit a handful of dry leaves, quickly stuffed them into the stove, fiddled with the tongs, and when the fire was burning, stuffed some thicker firewood in, and then added a large pot of hot water to the pot.

Lin Miaoyin was stunned. This man never set foot in the kitchen before. She wanted to feed him the food. Now he was trying too hard to gain sympathy.

She glanced at Meng Yuanzheng, who was coughing and wiping his face due to the smoke.

However, his love of cleanliness has not changed. He took a shower as soon as he came back. She had already taken a simple shower at Lin's house in the afternoon, so she only needed to wash up tonight.

Forget it, I won’t fight with him. Let him wash it first and then I can wash it myself.

Lin Miaoyin entered the room, thinking about how to sleep. A bed, two chairs, four benches, a few small stools, a wardrobe, two suitcases, and a large table were all the things she needed.

She thought that with Meng Yuanzheng's personality, she would not be able to snatch the bed from him, so she might as well sleep on the floor. She rummaged through the closet and luckily found the two quilts she bought when she got married.

When the hot water was ready, Meng Yuanzheng scooped the water into a large bucket, walked into the house and said to her, "Where do you want to wash? I'll carry it to you."

Lin Miaoyin was stunned, looked at him, and pointed at the bucket, "Boil water for me?"

The author has something to say: Lin Miaoyin: Can you boil some bath water for me? You must be trying to please me, but I won't buy it.

Later, it smelled really good~
