Chapter 15: Boiling Snake

The pork was placed in a small wooden barrel and hung in the well to weigh it down. The flour and eggs were properly hidden in the cupboard, and the seasonings were packed separately. It was already noon, and Lin Miaoyin started to cook.

The snake meat had been cleaned by Meng Yuanzheng. It looked like a big yellow eel, so she was not afraid anymore. She asked Meng Yuanzheng to prepare the ingredients. She cut the snake meat into small pieces, poured some white wine, old ginger, green onions, and salt and marinated them evenly.

Meng Yuanzheng found some potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, eggplants, and beans, all of which were grown in the Lin family's private plot. Lin Miaojun sent them to his sister two days ago.

After washing it at the well and putting it in a basin, Lin Miaoyin quickly cut it into balls, prepared the ingredients, and washed the pot.

Meng Yuanzheng had already lit the fire, and when the pot was hot, she put a large amount of oil into it without hesitation.

You can’t be reluctant to use oil. You’ll have to think of a way after you finish eating.

When the oil is 80% hot and starts to emit green smoke, prepare to add the snake meat.

This is what Lin Miaoyin fears the most: cold water will explode when it meets hot oil.

Meng Yuanzheng stood up and said, "How about I come?"

"No need, I've already mastered the secret." Lin Miaoyin said as she poured all the snake meat in the bowl into the pot and quickly grabbed the lid to cover it.

There was a sizzling sound in the pot. After about ten seconds, I opened the lid and it stopped popping. Stir it with a spatula. Fry until the surface is golden brown and then remove from the pot. When the oil temperature rises, put the snake segments in and fry again. Remove from the pot and drain the oil.

Then pour the chopped ginger, garlic, chili and peppercorns into the hot oil and fry until fragrant. Pour in the side dishes and stir-fry until half cooked. Pour some water in, then put the snake meat on top, cover the pot and simmer.

On the other side, porridge was cooking on the small stove, making a gurgling sound.

She sat on the firewood pile and wiped her face with her apron. Cooking in this summer was really a pain.

Before the apron touched her face, a white handkerchief was handed to her.

"Wipe it with this."

She glanced at him, took it, and said with a smile, "Let me see this handkerchief. It's still new. Did you buy it?"

Meng Yuanzheng shook his head.

Looking again, he asked, "Isn't this from my dowry?"

Meng Yuanzheng also showed a puzzled look, very innocently, "I took it from my box."

"I remember now. A few days ago you stole the Dacron from my dowry to make clothes for that educated youth named Hui! This handkerchief must have been stolen from me at that time!"

If she hadn't mentioned this, she would have forgotten about Zhang Hui. Add to that the heroine, the other female educated youth, and herself, wow, Meng Yuanzheng has pretty good luck with women.

Meng Yuanzheng frowned, clenched his fists and placed them on his knees, "Is this true?"

"Yes! It's a pity you forgot. Zhang Hui would be very sad if she knew about it." She fanned herself with the corner of her clothes and glanced at him.

Meng Yuanzheng lowered his head with a unhappy look on his face and did not answer.

Just at this moment, a sound was heard in the yard. She looked out and saw a woman with a big braid, wearing army green clothes and pants, coming in with her waist twisted. She ran straight into the house.

"Cousin, cousin and brother-in-law, what delicious food are you making? It smells so good!"

Lin Miaoyin finally remembered that this was the original owner's cousin Yan Hongyue, another cannon fodder in the book. She had been engaged to the male protagonist as a child, but she despised the poor and loved the rich, so she started dating the son of a minor official in the county town and kicked the male protagonist away. In short, she was just a tool to highlight the male protagonist's misery.

"What are you doing here?" Lin Miaoyin moved her butt, leaving half of the bench for her to sit on.

"I heard that my brother-in-law was injured, so I came to see him." Yan Hongyue sniffed and smelled the fragrance in the air.

"Come here empty-handed?"

"Um, what is the relationship between us two sisters? Do we still care about those empty formalities?" Yan Hongyue said with a smile.

Lin Miaoyin didn't buy it. She stood up, opened the lid of the pot, stir-fried the meat and vegetables in the pot, then covered it again and simmered it.

"It smells so good. Sister, can I stay and have a meal today?" Yan Hongyue almost drooled. Her brother-in-law was a city dweller and he really knew how to enjoy life. She would also marry a city dweller in the future. That man who was her childhood sweetheart was still digging coal. It would be a fool's wit to marry him.

"No, I spent half the night to catch two eels. If you want to eat them, go catch them yourself." Lin Miaoyin said.

The two sisters have an average relationship and are from the same village, so it’s okay if they don’t invite each other for dinner.

Yan Hongyue pouted and looked at her complainingly, "Stingy."

"Tell me, what do you want to see me about?" Lin Miaoyin said, asking Meng Yuanzheng to move his butt, and she sat down on the other side of his bench.

"I'm going to the county town to watch a movie with my friends tomorrow. Can you lend me the pair of leather shoes you wore for your wedding? I only have cloth shoes, and it would be so embarrassing to go to the city." Yan Hongyue showed a pleading look and bowed to her.

Lin Miaoyin thought for a moment and thought about how the plot had developed now. It had developed to the point where the poor male protagonist was cheated on by his fiancée, and the person who cheated on him was now standing in front of her.

But if Yan Hongyue doesn’t cheat on the male protagonist, how can the male protagonist be with the female protagonist? So this thing really can't be stopped.

In addition, apart from cheating on the male protagonist, Yan Hongyue did not do any other bad things, and the original work does not describe her much.

"Okay, I'll lend it to you, but don't break it."

"My cousin is so nice! I love her the most!" Yan Hongyue said gratefully.

"Come with me." She stood up and dusted herself off, told Meng Yuanzheng to keep an eye on the pot, and took Yan Hongyue into the house to get the leather shoes wrapped in newspaper.

"Don't worry, cousin. I'll only wear them for one day. After that, I'll make sure they're washed clean and returned to you." Yan Hongyue held the shoes carefully.

Lin Miaoyin didn't care about a pair of shoes, especially an ugly one, but knowing that Yan Hongyue was going on a date with the male mistress, she still gave her a few instructions and sent her back.

When I returned to the kitchen, the snake meat was almost ready. I sprinkled it with a handful of chopped green onions and served it in two full bowls. It was delicious and tasty. It was hard to find such a dish even during the Chinese New Year and other festivals.

She covered it with another large bowl, placed it in the basket, and covered it with a layer of cloth. Seeing that it was still early and not yet time for lunch at the Lin family, she carried the basket to the Lin family.

The Lin family was cooking, and she briefly explained the origin of the meat, which caused Lin's mother and Cui Fen to sigh and praise Meng Yuanzheng for his ability. Lin Miaojun even patted his chest and promised to find some realgar to drive away snakes.

Before she left, Lin's mother packed her a large basket of vegetables and a few freshly-cooked steamed buns before letting her leave.

When he got home, Meng Yuanzheng was sitting under the eaves with his eyes closed. When he heard the gate open, he opened his eyes, strode over, took the heavy basket from Lin Miaoyin's hand, and said, "I've got some water from the well. Go wash your hands."

After Lin Miaoyin washed her hands, Meng Yuanzheng put away the vegetable basket and said, "The porridge has been scooped out and is cooling. Go and eat it directly."

Sitting down at the table, I found that the porridge was just the right temperature, not as hot as when it was just out of the pot. The chopsticks were already set out, the steamed bun was also served on a plate, and some kimchi was picked out and put in the bowl.

Meng Yuanzheng sat down and uncovered the large bowl that served as a lid for the snake meat. Seeing Lin Miaoyin looking at him strangely, he asked what was wrong.

Lin Miaoyin smiled and said, "What a good wife and mother!"
