Chapter 146 Marrying Someone of Equal Social Status is Important

Li Shuhe, oblivious to Cheng Dan's cold expression, asked, "Dr. Cheng, are you here for dinner too?"

Before Xu Ruantang came to the compound, Cheng Dan and Li Shuhe had a pretty good relationship, mainly because the Li family had a certain status, and Cheng Dan would give them some face.

In addition, she was much younger than Cheng Dan and Chen Ji, so Cheng Dan always felt that it was quite prestigious to have such a girl following behind him.

All of this came to an end on the day Li Shuhe offered to stand up for her.

He promised to stand up for her and teach Xu Ruantang a lesson, but the two ended up getting entangled and are now good friends.

Of course she felt uncomfortable.

"Hmm, just the two of you?" Cheng Dan smiled faintly, her expression unchanged.

She glanced outside the shop, clearly expecting something.

Li Shuhe nodded, "Yes, then you guys take your time eating."

After saying that, she stood up and moved to sit next to Xu Ruantang, who was originally sitting facing each other.

The two talked in hushed tones, oblivious to their surroundings, and occasionally burst into laughter.

Cheng Dan and Lu Lei were sitting not far from them, but they were whispering to each other, and she couldn't hear a word they were saying.

She always felt that their laughter was grating, and their faces turned somewhat unpleasant.

Lu Lei pushed the poured water towards Cheng Dan, "Are they your friends?"

Cheng Dan picked up the water and poured it directly into an empty bowl next to her. Then she took out a handkerchief and carefully wiped the cup before pushing it to Lu Lei.

"That's Commander Li's youngest daughter." Cheng Dan only introduced Li Shuhe, making no mention of Xu Ruantang.

Lu Lei had met Cheng Dan several times during this period and had become accustomed to her way of doing things.

Knowing she was a doctor and quite clean, I didn't think much of her pouring water; I simply took the cup and poured her another one.

He remembered seeing Xu Ruantang at the Chen family's gate that day, so he took the initiative to start a conversation, "Is the other one Commander Chen's wife? I remember seeing Instructor Xu and them going back to the Chen family that day."

Even Lu Lei, who lived in the Air Force compound, had his family mention Chen Ji's recommendation to Tsinghua University several times.

Moreover, Chen Ji was one of the few people who became a regimental commander at the age of twenty-eight, and he was very famous throughout the military region.

Cheng Dan's face darkened, and she said in a voice only the two of them could hear, "Chen Ji had no choice. He went back to the countryside to recuperate from his injuries, and getting married wasn't his intention."

Lu Lei was naturally unaware of this matter, and he was also somewhat curious, so he couldn't help but take another look at Xu Ruantang.

Commander Chen's wife looks like a college student, and when she sits next to Commander Li's daughter, she even has a more outstanding temperament.

“She’s a perfect match for Commander Chen,” Lu Lei said casually.

Cheng Dan's face darkened, and her gaze fell on the two people who were still chatting and laughing beside her. "She is good-looking, but Chen Ji went to university. I heard she didn't even finish junior high school."

She gave Cheng Lei a smile, "You should know that for people like us, it's very important to marry someone of equal social standing. It's a pity about Commander Chen."

Li Shuhe lowered her head, picked up her wine glass to clink with Xu Ruantang's, and said, "You promised to keep me company, but now you're not drinking at all? Are you even my good friend?"

She'd only had a small glass of wine, and she was already cursing.

Xu Ruantang originally didn't plan to drink. She didn't even know her own alcohol tolerance. If only Li Shuhe got drunk, she could carry her back.

But if both of them get drunk, in this day and age, they might be stolen even if they sleep on the street; it's not safe at all.

Seeing that she still wouldn't pick up her wine glass, Li Shuhe's eyes instantly reddened. "Waaah... Ruan Ruan, you don't love me anymore. You don't even want to play with me anymore."

Her voice suddenly rose, and she even stood up as she spoke.

There were still quite a few people eating in the restaurant, and they were all looking this way.

Xu Ruantang quickly pulled her down to sit, picked up her wine glass, and asked, "You've said so much, but you still haven't told me what's going on. Are you drowning your sorrows or celebrating?"

This doesn't look like a celebration at all. Did she break up with her boyfriend?

I haven't heard anything about her dating anyone. She's such a blabbermouth; if she were dating someone, she would definitely tell everyone.

"Sigh." Li Shuhe sighed, "I'm just trying to cheer myself up. August 1st is coming up soon, and our troupe is putting on a show, but my partner has run off with someone else!"

"At this critical juncture, it looks like my show is going to be canceled!"

Li Shuhe made a self-deprecating remark, picked up his wine glass, and drank it all in one gulp.

"Who? Who's so bold as to steal your partner?"

Xu Ruantang was very curious. With Li Shuhe's identity, even if others were eager to associate with her, she would at least not be targeted.

She had heard before that the performing arts troupe was like a small society, where all sorts of things could happen.

Li Shuhe suddenly looked up, put a hand on Xu Ruantang's shoulder, and whispered in her ear, "Damn it, it's your son-of-a-kind second aunt."

Xu Ruantang almost spat out her water.

Li Shuhe was drunk, and these curses just came out of her mouth without warning, which was completely different from her usual self.

"Jia Shuling?" Xu Ruantang frowned. "Why don't you talk to your regimental commander?"

"Stop talking nonsense, let's drink!"

Li Shuhe poured herself a glass of wine and was about to clink glasses with Xu Ruantang.

She looked down and saw a corner peeking out of Xu Ruantang's pocket, and immediately reached out and pulled it out.

"Oh my, isn't this Chen Ji? You've come for a drink too?"

Li Shuhe pointed at Chen Ji in the photo, her eyes wide open, "What are you looking at? Ruan Ruan is mine today! Get out of my way."

As she spoke, she was about to throw the photos away.

"No, don't throw it!" Xu Ruantang tried to snatch it.

Even though she was drunk, Li Shuhe was still incredibly agile. She put her hands behind her back and said, "Ruan Ruan, that's not fair of you. You should clink glasses with me first, and I'll give this drink back to you after you finish it."

Xu Ruantang couldn't refuse her, so she picked up the wine in front of her and drank it.

Li Shuhe revealed a triumphant smile, "Here you go, here you go, you're treating an iceberg like a treasure."

Upon hearing Chen Ji's name, Cheng Dan immediately turned her head to look, and her expression changed when she saw the photo in Li Shuhe's hand.

She immediately stood up, walked over, and snatched the photo from Li Shuhe's hand.

Li Shuhe was sitting down and didn't expect there to be someone behind her.

Before she could turn her head, Cheng Dan sat down opposite the two of them. Lu Lei, not knowing what was wrong with her, followed her over.

"It's okay, you eat first, I'll chat with my friend for a bit and then come over."

Cheng Dan spoke softly to Lu Lei.

Seeing that nothing was wrong, Lu Lei nodded and returned to the dining table.

Li Shuhe was really drunk. Looking at Cheng Dan, she said, "Dr. Cheng, what kind of behavior is it to be holding someone else's husband's picture while you're on a date?"

"Shuhe, what nonsense are you talking about? We are just friends between comrades."

Cheng Dan quickly retorted.

She and Lu Lei only met a few times because she needed to give her father an explanation; she was forced into this situation by her family and had no other choice.

Her heart belonged only to Chen Ji.

Cheng Dan picked up the photo in her hand, a hint of sadness flashing in her eyes. "This is a photo of Chen Ji going to university. I took it for him!"

The look of dejection on his face flashed by, replaced by a triumphant expression.

Cheng Dan raised her chin. "Back then, Chen Ji was still a spirited young man."
