Chapter 25 She's Not My Soldier

Xu Hanli was also wronged. He had just lifted a corner of the blanket when he found that he couldn't lift it at all.

When I looked up, I was met with a pair of eyes as sharp as a hawk's.

It was cold and sharp, so much so that he almost shivered.

"Xu Hanli, what are you doing?" His deep, slightly hoarse voice couldn't hide the chilling tone in his voice.

Xu Hanli patted his chest, "You scared me to death!"

Chen Ji wasn't supposed to wake up so quickly, probably because of a long-standing habit that kept him constantly alert to his surroundings.

He woke up when Xu Hanli started working on him.

Chen Ji glanced at Xu Hanli indifferently, then raised an eyebrow. "What have you done that you've been up to?"

One sentence instantly made Xu Hanli furious.

He stood up, his chest heaving, clearly furious. "You two, why do you both love to frame people so badly?! If your wife hadn't objected, I wouldn't have helped a man with his thigh wound!"

It's true what they say, birds of a feather flock together; these two are quite a perfect match!

Xu Hanli plopped down on the stool and turned away to sulk.

Chen Ji frowned, then looked around and realized he was lying on a hospital bed with an IV drip in his hand.

Xu Hanli just asked, "You two?"

Chen Ji turned his head and saw Xu Ruantang pouring water, his eyes darkening.

Her shoes and trouser legs were covered in mud, and her long hair was tied back, obscuring her face, but the stray hairs on her forehead were wet.

"Have some water." Xu Ruantang supported Chen Ji's back, placed a pillow behind him, and handed him the water after he was half-reclined.

Chen Jimu paused for a moment, took the water, and said, "Thank you."

The doctor had said that he was fine once he woke up, so Xu Ruantang finally felt relieved.

"How did I get here?" Chen Ji put down his water glass and asked in a normal tone.

Actually, when he saw Xu Ruantang's trouser legs and shoes, he already had a guess in his mind, but he still wanted to confirm it.

The woman in front of me is clearly very thin and looks quite frail. How did she manage that? Perhaps she got help from someone from her hometown?

Just as Xu Ruantang was about to speak, she suddenly remembered that Aunt Wang's cart was still parked at the hospital entrance!

"Oh no! Aunt Wang's cart!"

As she spoke, she took off walking out of the ward, almost running.

Before he had taken two steps, Chen Ji called out to him, "Don't go, let Xu Hanli go."

Xu Hanli, sitting to one side sulking, was speechless.

"No need, he doesn't know where the cart is." Xu Ruantang was worried; if she borrowed something from someone, she had to return it intact.

If she went to town and lost the things that Aunt Wang had kindly lent her, then it would truly be considered immoral of her.

"As long as he recognizes the cart, that's fine."

Chen Ji glanced at Xu Hanli, who resignedly stood up and walked out, saying, "Fine, fine, I'll go."

If he didn't go, Chen Ji's eyes looked like he wanted to devour him.

When I woke up, I felt so sorry for my wife. Sure enough, all men are the same; once they have a wife, they forget their comrades!

Xu Hanli, being tall and long-legged, quickly stepped past Xu Ruantang and left the ward, closing the door behind him.

"How did I get here?" Chen Ji was still pondering this question.

Xu Ruantang sighed, "Of course, we didn't walk here."

"Did you push me here in a handcart?" Chen Ji knew the distance from Dahe Village to the city.

Even Chen Ji was somewhat surprised that someone as tall as him had to be pushed on a handcart, especially on a road that had just rained.

"Yes, the doctor said your wound is infected, which is why you had a high fever and fell into a coma. I'm going to get some food. Now that you're awake, check your leg wound yourself. If there's any bleeding or pus, tell the nurse immediately."

Xu Ruantang finished speaking in one breath and turned to leave the ward.

She quickly bought some porridge, steamed buns, and side dishes. The food in the hospital cafeteria was very simple, with little choice.

"Have some porridge first." Xu Ruantang thought for a moment, then moved a stool and sat down by Chen Ji's bedside, intending to feed him.

Chen Ji looked a little awkward as he took the lunchbox and said, "I can do it myself."

The two ate lunch in silence. Xu Ruantang also drank a bowl of porridge and ate a little bit of side dish before stopping eating.

Although I was hungry, I felt more nauseous.

Perhaps due to overexertion, she felt a tightness in her chest and shortness of breath, and wanted to take a nap.

After looking around the ward, Xu Ruantang sat down by the window with a stool, taking up a small portion of Chen Ji's bed space to lie down.

She wouldn't have crossed the line like this if she hadn't been so desperate.

"I'm going to sleep for a little while, just a short while. Call me if you need anything."

Xu Ruantang spoke in a soft, gentle voice. It was the first time Chen Ji had heard her speak so gently, and his Adam's apple bobbed slightly. "Mmm."

She must be exhausted.

Chen Ji moved his legs and shifted to the other side of the bed, trying to give her enough space.

The truth is, she really only occupied a small area and soon fell into a deep sleep.

The afternoon sunlight streamed into the ward, casting a golden glow on her face. Her long eyelashes covered her eyes, and her red lips were slightly parted.

Chen Ji subtly shifted his gaze, then suddenly turned it back.

Xu Ruantang's right hand rested on the hospital bed, and he immediately noticed the mottled red marks on it. That hand had been injured a couple of days ago, and after applying medicine twice, it was almost healed.

Xu Hanli stored the cart away and then went to the canteen.

When he returned to the ward, he saw Chen Ji gently holding Xu Ruantang's wrist and applying ointment to her palm little by little with a cotton swab.

Hearing the noise, he turned to look at Xu Hanli, then went back to wrapping the gauze.

"Tsk tsk, who would have thought that the mighty Chen Ji would have this side to him? Back then, even when your soldier broke his leg, you wouldn't let him utter a sound."

Xu Hanli lowered his voice, but his tone was full of complaints.

Chen Ji never touched her hand once, only lifting it up by pinching her wrist when he had no other choice.

After the bandage was finished, Chen Ji leaned back against the headboard.

"She's not one of my soldiers," Chen Ji said calmly.

Xu Hanli sat down next to him. "Right, I know she's your wife, no need to brag. By the way, you got married damn fast!"

If this news gets back to the troops, I don't know how many people will be heartbroken.

As Xu Hanli was thinking this, he heard Chen Ji say, "You don't know?"

How would I know?

Xu Hanli gave him a strange look before noticing that Chen Ji looked serious, with a hint of helplessness in his expression.

"What happened?"

"It was Chief Cheng who personally visited Dahe Village." Chen Ji's expression remained calm, revealing nothing of his thoughts.

"What?!" Xu Hanli was no longer so calm and stood up from the stool.

Chen Ji glanced at Xu Ruantang subconsciously, and seeing that she was sleeping soundly and had not been disturbed at all, he turned his head and said, "Keep your voice down."

"Oh." Xu Hanli sat back down, his face full of disbelief. "Hey, Chief Cheng is really something. He couldn't persuade her, so he set his sights on you."

That's just reality.

They treated Chen Ji so well back then, but as soon as something happened, they turned their backs on him completely.
