It was very cold. Huan Molin, who was a little taller than Wang Xiuxiu, was walking ahead of her.
As Wang Xiuxiu rubbed her hands together, she thought to herself, "This mixed-race child is really something else. He grows as tall as a rocket."
They grew up so quickly.
Just now at the gate of the compound, the old man in the gatehouse thought she had brought a young man back.
"Morin, why are you walking so fast?"
Wang Xiuxiu called out to Huan Molin, who was looking excited and whose face showed no trace of having lost a small pearl just an hour ago.
Huan Molin didn't turn his head. "Aunt Xiuxiu is right. It's too late. I don't want to disturb your sleep."
Wang Xiuxiu's lips twitched. "Do you know which way to go?"
During the half-day she spent earnestly persuading him to go home, Huan Molin didn't show the slightest apology for disturbing her.
They've put it back on now.
Huan Molin finally stopped in his tracks.
Wang Xiuxiu followed slowly, tilting her head to sized him up.
never mind.
He has the height of an adult, but his face is still that of a child. I forgive him!
She led Huan Molin to the alley entrance, and when she looked up, she saw Xu Ruantang standing in front of her house, looking in their direction.
Huan Molin walked even faster, calling out, "Sister!"
Wang Xiuxiu followed behind, letting out a soft sigh.
This child always seems a bit unpredictable!
"Sister Xiuxiu, Molin."
Xu Ruantang smiled and said, "You haven't eaten yet, have you? Why don't you come in first and I'll make you something."
Wang Xiuxiu waved her hand, "No, it's so late, who can eat anymore? I'll go back then."
She winked at Xu Ruantang.
Xu Ruantang looked at Huan Molin and said, "Wait here for me."
After saying that, he followed Wang Xiuxiu and walked a few steps away.
Wang Xiuxiu lowered her voice, "Ruan Tang, thank you for your trouble. This guy insists on seeing you. I wouldn't have bothered you if I hadn't really been able to persuade him otherwise."
Xu Ruantang smiled and said, "It's alright. My godmother doesn't live at home, and the room downstairs is empty. He can stay there."
Wang Xiuxiu lowered her voice even further, "I always feel that this child has some ulterior motives. You should keep a close eye on him, lest he become some kind of little spy."
When this was mentioned, Xu Ruantang wasn't joking. "Okay, I'll be careful. You should go back and rest. It's getting late. Do you want me to take you?"
Wang Xiuxiu waved her hand and quickly walked away.
Xu Ruantang also brought Huan Molin into the courtyard.
Huan Molin walked along, looking around.
Xu Ruantang ignored him, took out the prepared items, handed them to him, and pointed to a spot not far away, "This is the bathroom. The towels and toothbrushes are new. Go wash up and go to sleep."
Huan Molin obediently accepted it.
But he stood still, his gaze fixed on Xu Ruantang, and said in a calm voice, "Sister, the first time I met you at the hospital, I was speaking English."
His words were completely inexplicable.
Xu Ruantang nodded in agreement, "Okay, I understand."
"Sister, you could understand what I was saying back then, right?"
Huan Molin speaks fluent and standard Mandarin now.
In less than a year, he has completely lost his former self.
Xu Ruantang pouted, looked up and saw a curly tuft of hair on his head, and flicked it on the forehead.
Huan Molin clutched his head in pain.
"I think you're just bored and have nothing better to do."
Xu Ruantang pulled his arm and walked towards the bathroom. "You little brat, you don't go to school every day, what kind of nonsense are you thinking about?"
"Hurry up and go wash up, I'm going upstairs to sleep."
Huan Molin let her pull him along without struggling.
But as soon as he got to the bathroom door, he started acting up again.
He clutched his stomach and looked at Xu Ruantang with pitiful eyes, "Sister, I'm hungry."
Xu Ruantang coughed twice, choked by the choking.
Helplessly, he asked, "What do you want to eat?"
"Anything you make is fine."
Huan Molin's tone was cheerful.
Xu Ruantang wanted to flick him on the forehead again. He was only twelve years old, how could he talk so greasy?
"You take a shower first, I'll do it."
Just as she was about to lift her foot, she heard steady footsteps coming from the stairs.
Chen Ji's cold gaze fell on Huan Molin.
They're still just kids; they chicken out after being looked at a few times by an old fox like Chen Ji.
He shrank his neck, trying to hide behind Xu Ruantang.
Chen Ji pulled Xu Ruantang aside and raised his chin, "Wife, go upstairs to sleep."
"But my sister said she would cook for me."
Huan Molin said anxiously.
Chen Ji glanced at him and said, "I'll make it for you."
Huan Molin was completely speechless.
Xu Ruantang smiled at Chen Ji and said, "It's late at night, don't make him too much, or he'll get sick from overeating."
Chen Ji gave a soft "hmm".
Xu Ruantang turned and walked upstairs. Huan Molin wanted to chase after her, but Chen Ji blocked his way.
"Go take a shower."
Chen Ji remained calm.
Huan Molin sensed an impending storm and weakly replied, "Oh."
After saying that, he quickly took his things and went into the bathroom.
When he came out again, Chen Ji was sitting at the dining table, reading the newspaper by the light of the lamp.
Opposite him was a large bowl of tomato and egg noodles and a glass of warm water.
"Eat."
Chen Jiyan's words were concise and to the point.
Huan Molin was inexplicably annoyed by what he saw, and frowned, saying, "I'm not hungry right now, I'm not eating."
He hasn't eaten anything all day, no wonder he's hungry.
But he just wanted to go against Chen Ji.
Chen Ji didn't try to persuade him. He put down the newspaper, stood up, and was about to pick up the bowl.
