Xu Ruantang blinked, puzzled, peeled off the white membrane from the orange segment, and popped another one into her mouth.
Her eyes were full of question marks.
"It's my fault, I forgot to taste it when I bought it."
Xu Ruantang clapped her hands, thinking that her aunts and uncles thought she was a spendthrift.
She thought it was alright, but it was just sweet and sour, and she felt it wasn't sour enough.
"Ruan Tang, aren't the oranges sour?"
Ye Lan asked her.
Xu Ruantang shook her head, "It's alright."
"......"
The room was quiet for a moment, then erupted into chaos again.
"Second sister, are you going to be a grandmother again?"
"I think it's another kid!"
"Of course! Sour for a boy, spicy for a girl! When I was pregnant with my little one, I ate bottles of vinegar!"
"Bring me the oranges, I want to try them."
As Ye Lan listened to her aunts and uncles each say something, she gradually began to laugh.
"What son? I was pregnant with my stepson and I even craved spicy food. No way, it's definitely a girl."
The way she looked made it seem like Xu Ruantang was actually pregnant.
But it would be best if this baby were a girl.
Xu Ruantang sat on the sofa, opened her mouth, then closed it again.
Could she say that her stomach only contained oranges and steamed buns?
The truth is, when she said it, nobody believed her.
They also tried to shut her up with theoretical knowledge, saying, "It must be because you're still in the early stages of pregnancy and don't know it yourself, right? Your aunt has been through this before, and I can tell from your situation that you're pregnant."
"Have you been feeling constantly sleepy and unable to wake up lately? Do you get tired easily with the slightest movement? Have you felt nauseous?"
"Okay, I'll have your stepson take you to the hospital for a check-up in a couple of days."
"Yes, let's go see. It's always a sure thing. Auntie has never been wrong!"
They chatted back and forth, and Xu Ruantang's words were completely ignored, as if they were just passing by.
Xu Ruantang had no choice but to continue eating oranges.
Anyway, she knows for sure whether she has it or not. She can't really go to the hospital and throw the test results in her aunt's face, can she?
They were happy, so they let them go.
Before mealtime, Xu Ruantang wanted to go to the kitchen to help, but her aunts and uncles held her down, insisting that she stay seated and not go into the kitchen.
She was eating oranges, and one of her aunts even peeled several for her, worried that she would get tired from peeling them, and put them on the plate in front of her.
The white membrane on the oranges was completely removed.
However, Xu Ruantang underestimated the influence of women. She thought they would say a few words and then forget about it soon.
Who knew that this matter would be spread even more widely during the meal?
Chen Ji was pulled to the elders' table, and before he could figure out what was going on, he was toasted several times.
Soon, he was called over by his older and younger brothers to continue drinking, supposedly to celebrate.
"Third brother, congratulations!"
"Yes, yes, it's only been less than a year, and we have everything."
"That's why people say a man should establish his career before starting a family. Look at our third son, he has everything he could ever want!"
Chen Ji thought they were congratulating him on his marriage, and he was happy, so he drank a few more glasses.
Having many relatives means having a large business to manage.
After seeing off her relatives in the afternoon, Xu Ruantang looked at the mess in the living room and sighed deeply.
"Although it's a bit chaotic, we only get together once a year, so we're happy that we can all get together."
Ye Lan saw through her thoughts and said with a smile.
"Are you sleepy? Go take a nap."
Ye Lan started to shoo her away, showing no intention of asking for her help.
Xu Ruantang stood beside Ye Lan, scratched his head, and said, "Mom, I'll help you."
"That won't do. From now on, you need to be more careful. Don't lift anything heavy. Let Chen Ji do it."
Ye Lan refused no matter what she said.
Xu Ruantang was even more embarrassed, "Mom, I'm not pregnant."
Why is Ye Lan starting to believe everything she hears? She can even connect eating an orange to having a baby boy!
"Yeah?"
While clearing the water glasses from the table, Ye Lan said with a smile, "Then you should also take care of yourself. Chen Ji seems to have drunk a bit too much. Go and see if he wants some warm water."
"oh."
Xu Ruantang poured a glass of warm water and carried it to their room.
It's at the very back of the first floor.
Xu Ruantang walked over and found the room door wide open, with pink sheets still covering the bed.
Chen Ji is not here.
"Chen Ji?"
Xu Ruantang called out softly and placed the water glass on the shelf near the entrance.
She decided to go out and check since no one was home.
Chen Ji rarely drinks, and his alcohol tolerance isn't high, otherwise she wouldn't have been able to get him drunk before.
Xu Ruantang was afraid that he would fall asleep in that corner, and in the middle of winter, he might catch a cold.
She turned to leave, but her wrist was grabbed, and in the blink of an eye, the door was blocked behind her.
The tip of his nose reeked of alcohol.
Xu Ruantang wrinkled her nose. "What are you doing, acting all mysterious in broad daylight?"
Chen Ji's narrow eyes were slightly red, a result of the alcohol.
Compared to his usual clear eyes, Chen Ji's eyes now seemed to be veiled in mist.
"Wife, do you dislike me?"
Chen Ji's voice was slightly deep. Although he was not fully conscious, he still accurately captured Xu Ruantang's wrinkling nose.
"Ugh, it all smells like alcohol, I hate it."
Xu Ruantang struggled to free her wrist, but Chen Ji held it tightly.
"Aren't you dizzy from drinking so much?"
Struggling was useless, so she simply gave up, turned to look at Chen Ji and asked.
Chen Ji took a deep breath and it took him a while to answer, "Dizzy."
"If you feel dizzy, stand up straight and drink some water."
Xu Ruantang spoke in a firm tone.
Chen Ji released her and slowly walked towards the bedside.
Xu Ruantang followed behind him with a glass of water, and handed it to him as soon as he sat down.
Chen Ji drank it all in one gulp.
Logically speaking, she and Chen Ji have been together for quite some time, and it wouldn't be an exaggeration to call them an "old married couple."
He should remain calm if he does something ordinary.
But then, watching Chen Ji sit up straight, his long legs casually bent, his Adam's apple bobbing up and down as he drank water, I noticed something else.
Perhaps because he was thirsty, Chen Ji drank very quickly, and water droplets slowly slid down his lips.
After downing a glass of water, Chen Ji freed one hand, placed his well-defined fingers on his Adam's apple, and unbuttoned the top button of his shirt.
"Clatter."
That slight sound stirred Xu Ruantang's mind.
"young married woman?"
The warm, deep voice rang in her ears, and Xu Ruantang instantly snapped back to reality.
She paused for a moment when she saw the hand extended towards her before reaching out to take the cup.
"You take a nap, I'll go outside and see if Mom needs any help."
Xu Ruantang spoke quickly, then walked out while holding the cup.
She's really outrageously sexy now.
In broad daylight.
We're still at my in-laws' house.
She started to have wild thoughts.
Even now, the images of New Year's Eve are still lingering in my mind, as if I'm possessed.
I guess I talked about having children too much during the day, and my mind wandered to that topic without me realizing it.
Chen Ji's eyes were as dark as ink. He propped himself up on the bed with one hand, watching his wife's retreating figure, and a faint smile appeared on his lips.
