Chapter 37: Taking advantage of Chen Ji

The son was still at the neighbor's house when the woman left.

Chen Ji carried Xiao Bao and went back to the house with Xu Ruantang, one after the other.

After putting Xiao Bao down, Chen Ji sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed) and looked at Xu Ruantang. The look in her eyes made her feel uneasy.

"What did you say to Chen Lei's wife?"

Chen Ji rested his hands on his lap, slowly looked over, and asked casually.

Xu Ruantang knew that Chen Ji wanted to ask about much more than just this.

From the moment he appeared at the Wang family home conscious, Xu Ruantang knew that this man was far from being as carefree as he appeared.

He definitely didn't drink Chen Lei's cup of honey water, and he doesn't even know how Chen Lei managed to dodge the handkerchief that Chen Lei later covered him with!

“I said, only when Chen Lei goes to jail can she and her son have a good life.”

Xu Ruantang pulled up a chair and sat down directly opposite Chen Ji, answering frankly and openly.

"Um?"

Fuck you.

Xu Ruantang rolled her eyes inwardly, but said calmly, "I heard Aunt Wang say before that the woman was very pitiful. Chen Lei clearly couldn't have children, but he still forced her to have one. He forced her to sleep with other men, and then thought she was immoral, so he beat her every day. He beat her when she was pregnant, and he even beat her after she gave birth to their son."

Domestic violence is still quite common in rural areas these days, and people rarely think of choosing to divorce or report it to the police.

Even worse, the wife's family will choose to keep the peace, believing that enduring it will pass. Divorce or calling the police are things they wouldn't even dare to consider; all that awaits them is either to endure or to die.

"So you brought her here?" Chen Ji's eyes flickered.

"No, it really was her who contacted me. She dragged me out of the Wang family. She saved me, so it's only right that I help her." Xu Ruantang didn't intend to hide it. After all, Chen Ji was so smart, so being honest was the best choice.

Chen Ji's statement in front of everyone, "She has always been with me," was clearly a lie.

Since he had been conscious the whole time, he naturally knew when Xu Ruantang returned to the room and what she had done!

When Xu Ruantang thought back to the scene, she felt only relief that she hadn't gone too far!

She was dragged out of the Wang family's house by Chen Lei's wife, and there she saw Yao Yulan lying on the ground. That idiot Yao Yulan, she doesn't know how she managed to knock herself unconscious.

Perhaps she was being too clever for her own good, thinking that fainting together would make it more realistic. The sleeping potion was so effective that she fainted before even entering the Chen family's house.

After the woman pulled her out, she ran away in fear. It was Xu Ruantang who carried Yao Yulan into the Wang family's house.

She had just put Yao Yulan on the kang (a heated brick bed) when Chen Lei and Wang Jian arrived. Xu Ruantang could only hide behind the door and wait until the two men carried Yao Yulan away before returning to the Chen family home.

She went back to the Chen family home thinking that the honey water might contain sleeping pills, and wanted to warn them not to drink it. But as soon as she entered, she saw Chen Ji lying on the kang (a heated brick bed), while Xu Hanli was nowhere to be seen.

Xu Ruantang first tentatively called out to Chen Ji, but the person on the kang (a heated brick bed) did not respond at all. So she went over and patted Chen Ji's face twice.

Still no movement.

"Idiot!" Xu Ruantang cursed at him again.

When Chen Lei came in, Xu Ruantang could only pretend to be Yao Yulan. Afraid that he would see through her disguise, she even pressed her face against Chen Ji's chest!

In order not to arouse his suspicion, he had to pretend to be a rogue and grope Chen Ji, even though the feel of his hands was indeed quite nice.

But that's only if the other party doesn't know!

Now tell her that the other person knows and is still enduring it, she...

After Chen Lei left, Xu Ruantang quickly got up, sat on the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), and swung her legs, waiting for their next move.

At this point, she already knew very well what they wanted to do.

Sure enough, soon shouts of "Fire!" rang out from outside.

Xu Ruantang was worried about Xiaobao, so she went out to check on him. Only after seeing Aunt Wang holding Xiaobao did she feel relieved and return to the house.

So, Chen Ji knew everything she did all this time?

Is this what they call: "The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind"?

That old man is a real fox; he's definitely a soldier, very vigilant!

Chen Ji had obviously also thought of what had just happened, and his ears burned as he coughed dryly, saying, "You're still a suspect."

"Hmm?" Now it was Xu Ruantang's turn to be puzzled.

Chen Ji: "What if Yao Yulan keeps harping on you and insists that you're in cahoots with them?"

Xu Ruantang replied without hesitation, "Then let her produce the evidence! The burden of proof lies with the person making the accusation. I'm not on their side, so what's there to be afraid of?"

Chen Ji seemed thoughtful. "You're not upset that I didn't let the police take Wang Jian and Yao Yulan away?"

Xu Ruantang thought for a moment and shook her head, saying, "Even if Chen Lei's wife saw him drugging Wang Jian, I was standing there perfectly fine. Without solid evidence, the police couldn't do anything to Wang Jian."

Whether Yao Yulan sues Wang Jian for rape is a matter between them.

"As for Yao Yulan, she has become a victim, and the police can't do anything about it."

Besides, she herself brought Yao Yulan into the Wang family, so if this matter is investigated further, she won't get any good out of it.

Xu Ruantang knew that she was in the world of a book, and it was normal for villains to keep causing trouble around the male protagonist.

I reckon even those NPCs couldn't control themselves.

Furthermore, she understood the principle that "driving a dog into a dead end will inevitably lead to its own destruction."

"Chen Ji, don't you have anything to say?" Xu Ruantang looked up, staring at Chen Ji with a deathly gaze.

Chen Ji knew from the beginning that someone had drugged her, but she never imagined it was aimed at her.

Xu Ruantang naturally didn't drink the brown sugar water; she had sensed something was wrong when the flower cakes were delivered.

She heard every word of Wang Jian and Aunt Wang's conversation. Her lack of suspicion towards Aunt Wang didn't mean she wasn't wary of Wang Jian.

When Xu Ruantang looked at Chen Ji, Chen Ji was also sizing her up. Under the dim light, Chen Ji's angular face was filled with an inscrutable expression.

He stood up and walked step by step toward the chair.

The next moment, he bent down and stretched out his long arm, trapping Xu Ruantang in the chair.

Its tall figure loomed down, blocking out the lights.

At such close range, they could feel each other's breath, and Xu Ruantang's heart began to beat faster involuntarily.

The handsome face drew closer and closer, so close that the safe distance was no longer necessary. Xu Ruantang wanted to hide, but there was nowhere to hide.

"What...are you doing?"

Being stared at by Chen Ji made me feel like all my thoughts were laid bare.

"Let me see," Chen Ji said in a relaxed, deep voice, "what kind of wife did you marry?"

Xu Ruantang knew he suspected her, but she had been careful to maintain a proper balance in her actions over the past few days.

They couldn't find anything when they investigated; there was no evidence. Chen Ji couldn't very well use her for rituals, could he?

He is a member of the Communist Party and therefore an atheist.

Xu Ruantang's heart raced, and she pushed Chen Ji away.

She forgot that she was using a lot of force, and Chen Ji, caught off guard, stumbled back several steps and fell down onto the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed).

The atmosphere froze instantly...

"You've always been this strong?" Chen Ji asked with a smile, bracing himself against the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed).
