There were two knocks on the ward door.
That was Xu Ruantang reminding Li Shuhe that Shen Ergou had returned.
She absolutely must not let the Shen family know that she is pregnant.
Li Shuhe quickly wiped away her tears and composed herself.
Hearing footsteps outside the door, she changed the subject, saying, "I just came to see you. You should live a good life with your family from now on. No one in this world is indispensable. Shen Qingwen, let's part amicably."
Shen Ergou, standing outside the door, suddenly became serious.
He gritted his teeth, thinking to himself that Li Shuhe was truly impervious to reason; even with his elder brother in such a state, she didn't seem to care at all.
Is the heart made of stone?!
"Sister-in-law, please don't do this."
Shen Ergou rushed into the ward and knelt down in front of Li Shuhe with a thud.
He had no choice.
He is not qualified for any job in Beijing.
Besides, he's used to being idle and doesn't want to exert any effort at all.
With Shen Qingwen around, he could be guaranteed a comfortable life for the rest of his life, so Shen Qingwen needed to have hope of surviving.
Compared to having plenty to eat and drink, what are knee problems?
Without Shen Qingwen, even selling his knees wouldn't guarantee him a comfortable life.
"Sister-in-law, look at my brother. He really can't live without you."
Li Shuhe stared at him coldly, completely unmoved.
The veins on Shen Ergou's neck bulged as he clenched his fists and continued, "Sister-in-law, name your conditions! With my brother sick, I'm in charge of this family. Xu Ruantang's voice came from the doorway.
Upon hearing this, Shen Ergou glared fiercely at Xu Ruantang, wanting to lash out but forced to hold back his anger.
Last time, it was because of this woman at his house that his sister-in-law and brother-in-law had a fight!
My sister-in-law wasn't like that before!
Shen Ergou clenched his fists tightly and squeezed out a few words through his teeth: "Sister, people say it's better to tear down ten temples than to break up one marriage. My sister-in-law has just arrived. If you have something to do, you can go first. I'll take her back later."
His gaze toward Xu Ruantang was full of warning.
Li Shuhe pursed her lips and gave Shen Ergou a cool look. "I asked Ruan Tang to come and call me. If you have any complaints, why don't you take them out on me?"
Shen Ergou's face was ashen, and he forced a smile. "Sister-in-law, that's not what I meant. I just thought that someone had to step in and resolve your issues with my brother. It's better for you and for my brother if we talk things out today."
If this stalemate continues, only the Shen family will suffer.
The Shen family is in complete chaos now.
Li Shuhe's eyes were colder than ever before. She turned to look at Shen Qingwen, her tone indifferent: "What are you thinking?"
Shen Qingwen, his face pale, hurriedly reached out to tug at Li Shuhe's sleeve, his voice urgent, "Shuhe, I can't live without you! Don't go! From now on, whatever you say, I'll do! I was wrong, I was wrong..."
He whispered and repeated the words "I was wrong".
Shen Ergou looked down on his older brother in the slightest. Apart from being better at studying and being a bookworm, he was no good at anything else.
They have no backbone at all!
"Sister-in-law, did you hear that? My brother can't live without you."
Shen Ergou said with a smile.
Li Shuhe pulled away Shen Qingwen's hand that was tugging at her sleeve, lowered her eyes and pondered for a few seconds before speaking calmly: "Go find your parents and come over. I have something to say in front of your whole family."
Although he couldn't guess what Li Shuhe was going to say, Shen Ergou had a gut feeling that it must be something good.
Since she's willing to speak up, there's still a chance for things to turn around.
When Shen's father saw Shen Qingwen's condition at the hospital, he became irritable and went downstairs to the park for a stroll early in the morning.
Shen's mother is still on her way back.
After searching extensively, Shen Ergou finally brought both of them back.
To show his respect, he even went home and brought his wife and children with him.
Shen Ergou's wife is taciturn and does whatever she is asked to do. Even when the child is still sleeping, she will wake him up and come over with him.
The ward was noisy for a moment.
The sounds of a child crying, Shen Ergou scolding his wife, Shen's father cursing, and Shen's mother groaning.
Li Shuhe sat on the stool, frowned, and stood up. "If you're busy, I'll be leaving now."
The ward fell silent immediately.
Shen Ergou shoved his wife, "Take her outside and coax her! She's completely useless!"
His wife stumbled from the push, but remained expressionless as she silently walked out.
Shen Ergou glanced at Shen's mother, who immediately shut up.
“Sister-in-law, didn’t you say you had something to say? Now that our family is here, go ahead and say it.”
Shen Ergou still smiled like a lackey.
Li Shuhe paused for a moment before slowly tugging at the corners of her lips. "Second brother, you just said I could name any conditions I wanted. Does that still stand?"
Shen Ergou nodded quickly, "Of course it counts! Sister-in-law, you say so."
Mother Shen hesitated, but was glared at by Shen Ergou, and the words stuck in her throat.
Father Shen frowned, squatted in the corner, and asked in a deep voice, "What do you mean?"
Shen Ergou chuckled, "Dad, you see, it's not a good idea for eldest brother to stay in the hospital like this. So I've made the decision myself: as long as sister-in-law is willing to come back, our family will do whatever she says from now on!"
While he was speaking, he winked at Shen's father from where Li Shuhe couldn't see.
Father Shen glanced at Li Shuhe, but ultimately remained silent.
Li Shuhe said calmly, "I can remarry Shen Qingwen, but you will have to move out of the house allocated to you by the research institute."
These words caused the expressions of several people in the ward to change.
