What do people eat to grow up like this? How come no matter how unkempt a man is, he always has a great voice?
Xu Ruantang's worldview is about to collapse.
Before things could even collapse, Aunt Wang's loud shout interrupted her thoughts, "Chen Ji! Your wife is here. Shall I bring her in?"
Being a single man, Aunt Wang didn't bring Xu Ruantang inside.
There was another reason, which Aunt Wang didn't dare say: she was also somewhat afraid of Chen Ji. That man was icy cold, his eyes like they held knives—quite frightening!
"Come in." The man inside the room was silent for a moment before speaking in a deep voice.
Aunt Wang looks thin and small, but she's incredibly strong!
He grabbed Xu Ruantang, who hadn't even had a chance to move yet, and pushed open the door to go inside.
In those days, light bulbs were not very wattage. Under the dim yellow light, Xu Ruantang's first glance was at the furnishings in the room.
The sheets on the earthen bed were neatly arranged, and at one end there was a large black chest, on which was piled a stack of quilts.
A vintage red enamel basin sits on a shelf, with towels hanging on it.
Inside the room, there was a wardrobe with a mirror, a wooden table against the wall, and chairs arranged neatly.
There were even neatly stacked books and a radio on the wooden table.
The pen and letter paper were still on the table.
"Chen Ji, this girl said she came from the neighboring provincial capital to be your wife!" Aunt Wang said to Chen Ji with a smile, then turned and nudged Xu Ruantang with her elbow.
This girl seems so dazed and silly!
Xu Ruantang realized what was happening and quickly nodded in agreement, "Oh right, Aunt Wang is right! My name is Xu Ruantang."
She found the letter of introduction in her cloth bag and handed it over, saying, "This is the letter of introduction."
A large, well-defined hand reached out in front of me, with a long scar on the back of the hand—an old wound.
It's just that this hand is so beautiful that the scar on it doesn't look grotesque at all; instead, it has a unique, sculpted quality.
"Yes, thank you for your trouble, Aunt Wang." The man took the letter, put it on the cabinet without even looking at it.
"Don't mention it, you two chat first, I'm still cooking over there." Aunt Wang said with a smile as she walked out.
Xu Ruantang stood still, looking around at the decorations in the room before she noticed the child in the man's arms.
The little girl who was just crying now stared at her with her big, round eyes.
Xu Ruantang met her gaze and noticed how thin the girl was!
She had seen eight-month-old babies before; during the summer after her college entrance exams, she had spent some time as a "contemporary Andy Lau."
My niece is well-nourished; she weighs 20 pounds at eight months old. She's so heavy to hold, and her thighs feel wonderful to the touch.
The guy in front of her had thighs that weren't even as thick as her arms; he was pitifully thin.
"Sit down," the man said, gesturing to the kang (a heated brick bed) in front of him, his voice steady and calm.
Before Xu Ruantang could speak, the child began to whine and cry intermittently.
She watched helplessly as the man in front of her patted the toddler in his arms, and picked him up to comfort him.
It would have been better if he hadn't patted the child; the pat only made the child cry louder.
Xu Ruantang's face darkened. She walked over and took the child directly from the man's shoulder. "Let me do it. You patted her too hard. She's probably fussy and needs to be held and soothed to sleep."
Chen Ji's hand was suddenly empty, and he was about to stop it.
A miraculous scene unfolded.
The baby, who had been crying incessantly, stopped crying instantly!
The woman in front of her held the child horizontally, one arm around the child's armpit, while the other hand gently patted the child's bottom, and she was whispering something.
The child blinked, then gradually closed his eyes, looking like he was about to fall asleep.
Chen Ji's brow twitched slightly.
Apart from Xu Ruantang's soft humming as she soothed the child to sleep, there were no other sounds in the room.
After a while, Xu Ruantang spoke softly, "Where does she sleep? Lift the blanket and I'll put it on her."
As she spoke, she unconsciously patted the back of the child in her arms with one hand.
Chen Ji stared intently, then quickly lifted the quilt and pointed to the middle of the kang (a heated brick bed), "Here."
Since it was inconvenient for Xu Ruantang to hold the child, she climbed directly onto the kang (a heated brick bed).
She was still wearing shoes, and the spot Chen Ji pointed to was right next to him, so she couldn't get around him.
Chen Ji seemed to know what she was thinking, "I'll put it in."
After she finished speaking, the child in her arms seemed to sense her presence, shifting uncomfortably and letting out a soft moan.
Xu Ruantang quickly sped up her work and patted her until she fell asleep again.
"Never mind, move back a bit."
As she spoke, Xu Ruantang climbed onto the kang (a heated brick bed).
Chen Ji still has a leg injury; we can't just drag him down.
She bent down and gently placed Xiaobao in the bed, bypassing Chen Ji. Her movements were very light, and she explained softly, "She's not sleeping very soundly yet. Babies' bones haven't fully developed. First, put her bottom down, then gently support the back of her head or neck, and slowly lower her head down."
At this moment, Xu Ruantang was feeling uneasy, after all, she didn't know what kind of personality Xiaobao had.
Their niece is a typical high-needs baby.
I have to hold and soothe her to sleep for a long time at night, and even after she falls asleep, I have to hold her arm down. She often wakes up crying in her sleep.
Sleeping during the day is even worse. She sleeps soundly in your arms, but as soon as you put her down, the radar goes off automatically, and she'll burst into tears within a minute.
The torment caused her younger brother and sister-in-law and her mother to have trouble sleeping. Xu Ruantang's mother hadn't even finished her postpartum confinement when her back pain flared up again, and it kept getting better on and off for the next six months.
Xu Ruantang was then summoned to help.
She even developed dark circles under her eyes during that period, and suddenly felt that no matter how cute the child was, she would never have one in the future!
