Chapter 40 Let's go home

After spending more than half a month together, the two were no longer as distant as they had been at the beginning.

Xu Ruantang was outgoing and familiar, while Chen Ji was quiet and aloof; it would be reasonable to describe their relationship as one of mutual respect.

She wasn't afraid that Chen Ji would run away, but rather that he might faint somewhere again.

Xu Ruantang couldn't understand it at all. She hadn't done anything wrong before she transmigrated into the book, so why did her current experience seem to confirm the saying: "In her past life, she was cunning and scheming; in this life, she's married to him and is bearing the psychological burden."

Fate is cruel!

After a quick breakfast, feeding the baby and changing her diaper, Xu Ruantang carried her out of the house.

The baby was fragrant and soft after his bath. He kept kicking his legs when I held him in my arms. As soon as we went out, he excitedly babbled and turned his little head this way and that.

I had only walked a short distance when I saw Chen Ji's tall and imposing figure approaching from afar. It wasn't that he was the only tall person in the village, but rather that the calm and aloof aura he exuded was too unique.

As she got closer to Xu Ruantang, she noticed he was covered in sweat and asked in surprise, "What happened to you?"

Where are you going?

The two spoke at the same time.

“I came out to find you,” Xu Ruantang replied first.

Chen Ji smiled subtly, "Let's go home."

"So you went for a morning run, ran all the way to the city and then ran back?!" Xu Ruantang was genuinely surprised; the round trip must have been thirty or forty kilometers!

Looking at Chen Ji, who had returned to the house after taking a shower, she stared wide-eyed and asked.

Chen Ji was dressed neatly, and it was unclear how she had showered and changed her clothes, but at least she hadn't peeked at him; he was treating her like a thief...

Despite the weather not being May yet, he was only wearing a military green short-sleeved shirt.

Xu Ruantang thought he was really overdoing it. Even if he was wearing a short-sleeved shirt, it wouldn't cover anything! His muscles were so clearly defined; she wasn't blind.

A few drops of water remained on his collarbone; had this man just taken a cold shower?!

You're in great health.

Chen Ji's voice was calm and steady: "Hmm, are you going to run away? We can go together tomorrow."

"No, no, no, I can't, I won't run."

Xu Ruantang refused decisively, "Well, you play with Xiaobao, I'm going to make flower cakes."

After saying that, he fled the room as if he were being chased by a ghost.

What a joke! She's just a nobody, her life is in danger.

Running is out of the question; I'll never run in my life.

Tomorrow is May 1st, and Xu Ruantang got up early today to go back to the place where she last went to pick some flowers.

Last night she told Chen Ji to wake her up early this morning, but he didn't. He just brought her back while he was jogging.

Flower cakes are a seasonal product; once the roses wither, she can no longer make them.

If you have a refrigerator, you can make it into flower jam and refrigerate it.

Xu Ruantang was busy in the kitchen, and the morning passed quickly. Looking at the cutting board full of flower cakes, she felt a great sense of accomplishment.

A bicycle bell rang out from the gate, followed by a young boy's voice: "Excuse me, is this Chen Ji's house?"

Xu Ruantang went outside and saw a young man wearing a green postman's uniform.

“Yes, it’s Chen Jijia,” she said with a smile.

Her smile curved her eyes, and her cheeks, as beautiful as peach blossoms, were flushed with a healthy blush, making her more beautiful than the most beautiful flowers in spring.

The young man lowered his head shyly, "Um... there's a letter from Chen Ji."

He handed her an envelope, which Xu Ruantang took without hesitation. "Okay, thank you."

"Chen Ji, your letter." She turned and shouted into the house.

Chen Ji came out quickly, and Xu Ruantang handed him the letter, saying to the young man, "Wait a moment, I'll get you a glass of water."

Although the weather wasn't very hot, after riding a bicycle this far, it was only right to get a glass of water.

The young man took the water, drank it, and thanked him with a smile: "Thank you. What are you making at your house? It smells so good."

"Flower cakes, let me give you some to try." Xu Ruantang had a sudden inspiration. That's right, this profession is a living advertisement!

She wrapped a few flower cakes in oil paper, took a few honey bread rolls she had made yesterday, and quickly came out, saying, "Comrade, do you often deliver mail around here?"

"Yes, I deliver mail to all the villages nearby. I can't just take your things for nothing; I'll pay you whatever you ask for."

The young man withdrew his hand, not daring to take what Xu Ruantang offered, and said with a flushed face.

Xu Ruantang smiled and said, "I won't give it to you for free. Take it back and try it. If you like it, please help me spread the word. Tell them that Chen Ji's family at the end of Dahe Village sells flower cakes and honey bread rolls. They taste good and are cheap. Is that okay?"

"Okay!" The young man readily agreed, even though it was a casual matter.

The two men were talking at the door when Chen Ji went inside to read the letter. He opened the envelope and quickly read the two pages of the letter.

The letter was sent by Xu Hanli, and it contained all the information about Xu Ruantang that could be found.

Born into an ordinary rural family, whose members had been poor farmers for generations, but whose social class was considered good.

He dropped out of school after graduating from junior high and stayed home to help his parents with farm work. The whole family favored the son who was born later.

The villagers described her as a timid and shy girl who rarely dared to lift her head while walking.

She had never left the village before she was twenty years old; the only time she left was when she married into Dahe Village.

The reason she didn't get married until she was twenty was because her family was never satisfied with the amount of betrothal gifts offered by her prospective husband.

When Chen Ji saw the last line of text, his deep, cold eyes instantly turned icy.

"After her parents accepted the 3,000 yuan dowry, Xu Ruantang attempted to jump into the river to refuse the marriage, but was later rescued. For some reason, she then agreed to marry him."

After reading it, he quickly put the letter away.

His identity was unremarkable, but his personality differed greatly from the description in the letter. What bothered Chen Ji the most was that someone had almost lost their life because of him.

This was something he never expected. If he had known that three thousand yuan would lead to someone selling their daughter, Chen Ji would not have agreed, even if it meant disobeying military orders.

Moreover, he only found out later that the army had given him 3,000 yuan as a bride price; at first, Commander Cheng only said he would help him find a marriage partner.

"Chen Ji, why don't you feed Xiao Bao some steamed egg custard?"

Xu Ruantang lifted the curtain and walked in, her face beaming with joy.

"Okay." Chen Ji snapped out of his reverie, took the bowl, and casually asked, "What were you talking about?"

"Huh?" Xu Ruantang realized in the next second, "Are you asking about me and the postman? Talking about flower cakes and bread rolls?"

Since she wanted to start a business at home, she first needed Chen Ji's permission, so she simply said, "I'll ask him to help promote my pastries when he delivers mail to the surrounding villages. If anyone in the surrounding villages wants to eat them, they can come and buy them."

"Chen Ji, would you mind if I did business at your place?"

Xu Ruantang asked cautiously.

After all, he is now her legitimate client. What she is doing is equivalent to working for a large company while also doing a part-time job, and even doing part-time work in the office.

If the client (Party A) minds, that's understandable.

This big company provides meals and accommodation, and the monthly salary is considerable. She works a small part-time job and still uses company property...

That sounds a bit excessive.

Chen Ji looked up at her, his dark eyes unfathomable, his thoughts unreadable.

However, Xu Ruantang keenly sensed that he was unhappy.
