Chapter 404 A Disgrace

The scene was quite awkward at one point.

Chen Lin tried to speak several times, but Ye Lan stopped him each time.

Faced with the Cheng couple's combined efforts of soft and hard tactics, Chen Ji remained completely unmoved, glancing at Cheng Dan expressionlessly.

Cheng Dan trembled and hid behind her mother, too afraid to come out.

"Fine, we're all from the Cheng family anyway, it doesn't matter who gets splashed with it."

Chen Ji's voice was cold. After speaking, he directly pulled the stopper off the kettle and poured the hot water towards Cheng's mother.

At the critical moment, Cheng Dan pulled her mother away, gritted her teeth, closed her eyes, and went to meet her.

The scalding hot water instantly poured over the right side of her body.

Cheng Dan visibly flinched, her face turning pale.

"Dandan!"

"Dandan!"

Cheng's mother and father spoke at the same time, their voices shrill and sorrowful.

The next second, Cheng's mother's body went limp and she collapsed to the ground.

Forget about Cheng Dan for a moment, Cheng's father rushed to get Cheng's mother, picked her up and ran outside.

As he left, Mr. Cheng's face was cold and his tone icy: "Chen Lin, remember this, it was your family that insisted on going this far. Don't blame me for being ruthless in the future!"

After saying that, he glanced at Chen Ji, his gaze full of warning.

Chen Ji stood still, without blinking, a faint smile playing on his lips.

Chen Lin jumped to his feet, his face grim. "Old Cheng, what do you mean by this?! Are you threatening me? Let me tell you, I, Chen Lin, am not easily intimidated! Your family was in the wrong first, so what's wrong with my son retaliating in kind?!"

Mr. Cheng didn't say anything more, and turned to leave the Chen family with his wife in his arms.

Cheng Dan's body was half soaked, and her thin clothes revealed her scalded skin.

Her face was extremely pale, and she seemed to be immersed in immense grief, unable to come to her senses; her eyes were vacant.

When her mother fainted, Cheng Dan didn't react at all.

She stood in the main room of the Chen family for a moment, then slowly turned around and walked out step by step.

As they passed the crowd gathered outside the Chen family's house, everyone was whispering among themselves.

It was less a whisper and more a deliberate attempt to make Cheng Dan hear.

"Why are her clothes all wet?"

"Needless to say, he must have done something wrong and was taught a lesson by the Chen family."

"Could she be the bad person Chen Ji's wife was talking about?!"

"Tsk tsk, she's really incorrigible. They've been married for so long, and she's still eyeing Chen Ji all the time. She's morally corrupt!"

"Cheng's mother just fainted, probably because she was angered by her."

"Of course! If it were my daughter, I wouldn't be able to show my face in public. She ruined my perfectly good family!"

"a shame!"

Cheng Dan seemed not to hear, and walked step by step into the sunlight, then slowly went home.

After the Cheng family of three left, Chen Lin swung his arm and went upstairs without saying a word.

Chen Ji walked over to Xu Ruantang and squatted down again. "Wife, come up here."

Xu Ruantang obediently lay down on him without saying a word.

Ye Lan sat with the old lady, looking at Chen Ji with some fear, and watched the two of them leave.

Chen Ji carried Xu Ruantang on his back all the way back to the courtyard, seemingly oblivious to everyone else.

After arriving home, Chen Ji settled Xu Ruantang on the sofa and poured her a glass of hot water.

"Honey, sit down for a bit, be careful of your back injury. I'll go cook. What would you like to eat?"

Chen Ji's expression softened, and his tone was exceptionally gentle.

She was a completely different person from when she insisted on splashing Cheng Dan.

Xu Ruantang blinked. "Anything is fine."

Chen Ji ruffled her hair and turned to go into the kitchen.
