Once inside the courtyard, Xu Ruantang whispered to Xu Hanli, "Was that the instructor the comrade who was walking the dog just now calling you?"
Xu Hanli nodded, "Yes, sister-in-law."
"The 'commander' must be Chen Ji," Xu Ruantang glanced at Chen Ji thoughtfully.
Although I'm not entirely clear on the difference between the world in the book and reality, the idea of someone becoming a regimental commander at the age of twenty-eight is somewhat exaggerated, especially since we live in a time of peace.
Chen Ji took the things from Xu Hanli's hands. There were still many things left on the car, and the two of them went in and out several times to move them.
Aunt Wang held Xiao Bao and sat on the sofa by the entrance to rest.
Xu Ruantang looked around Chen Ji's house with curiosity. Upon entering, there was a living room, three rooms on the first floor, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a bedroom at the far end.
The quilt in the bedroom was folded into neat squares, and the room was clean with items arranged in an orderly manner.
"This is the guest room; Godmother will stay here from now on."
Chen Ji came in carrying some things. Xu Ruantang turned around and saw him putting the things down while staring at her and talking.
When Aunt Wang heard that they were talking about her place, she came over with her baby in her arms. After looking at the room, she nodded with satisfaction: "Good, good, good!"
Xu Ruantang had no objection to this arrangement, as it was somewhat inconvenient for older people to go up and down stairs.
I wonder if there's enough room on the second floor. The conditions here are so good, she shouldn't have to share a room with Chen Ji anymore, right?
"Shall we go up and take a look?"
Chen Ji stood beside Xu Ruantang, looking down at her.
Xu Ruantang nodded, "Okay."
With her owner's permission, she ran upstairs, and when she looked behind her, she realized that Chen Ji had followed her.
"Chen Ji, you're only twenty-eight and you're already a regimental commander?"
Driven by her curiosity, Xu Ruantang stared intently at him and asked.
Chen Jixian was taken aback for a moment, not expecting her to ask that, then nodded: "Yes."
Chen Ji showed no intention of continuing the topic, and Xu Ruantang, thinking it involved some military secrets, didn't ask any further.
Xu Ruantang smiled sincerely and said to Chen Ji, "You're really amazing! You're so young and already so successful!"
As expected of a novel's male protagonist, no wonder he exudes such a calm and composed demeanor!
This wasn't a compliment; Xu Ruantang was simply stating her true feelings.
But Chen Ji heard it differently. She raised her small, palm-sized face, her clear eyes filled with admiration.
Chen Ji's eyes flickered slightly, his deep pupils meeting her gaze as he asked, word by word, "So am I old or not?"
Xu Ruantang: "......"
Is this person really that vengeful?
"Not old at all, very young!" Xu Ruantang said sincerely, "Look at you, you're already twenty-eight years old, but you look younger than some twenty-year-olds! You have everything they have, and you also have things they don't have!"
"What's the meaning?"
"You have the youthful spirit they have, and you also have the mature and steady temperament they lack!" Xu Ruantang said, rattling off a string of flattering words.
Chen Ji was both amused and exasperated. He took a long stride to a door, pushed it open, and said, "This is the master bedroom, and that's the study. There are only two rooms upstairs."
Xu Ruantang's mouth reacted faster than her brain, and she asked with some worry, "Huh? The study?"
She went over and saw that the study only had a desk and a chair, but there was a bookshelf with various books neatly arranged on it. There was no bed at all.
"Then where will Xiaobao and I live?"
The master bedroom is the owner's room, so naturally Chen Jizhu lives there.
She had planned to live with Xiaobao before she came, so she was a little dumbfounded by the current situation.
A hint of helplessness flashed across Chen Ji's eyes. Just as he was about to speak, he heard footsteps coming upstairs.
"Oh dear, this bed can't fit three people." Aunt Wang brought Xiao Bao upstairs, glanced at the master bedroom door, and said with a smile, "That's easy, Xiao Bao and I will sleep tonight, and you two can stay upstairs!"
Xu Ruantang was about to say that this wouldn't do when Chen Ji interrupted her: "Okay, then thank you godmother for taking care of Xiaobao to sleep. You can call us if you need anything."
Xu Ruantang: "......."
She even doubted that Chen Ji had said those words. Xu Ruantang looked at Chen Ji with suspicion, and the latter gave her a reassuring look.
She understood instantly and didn't ask any more questions.
Xu Hanli got dinner from the army canteen. Everyone was tired after a long day, and Xiao Bao fell asleep as soon as he finished his milk.
After seeing Xu Hanli off, Chen Ji and Xu Ruantang walked side by side into the courtyard.
Xu Ruantang had held back all night, and now she finally had the chance to ask the questions she had been holding back: "Chen Ji, are you trying to keep this from everyone? Can't you even tell your godmother?"
Chen Ji stopped in his tracks. He was tall and imposing, and the light from the courtyard shone on him, casting a shadow that enveloped Xu Ruantang.
She couldn't help but move a few steps to the side, and Chen Ji looked at her with a puzzled expression.
"You're blocking my light," Xu Ruantang said weakly. "You haven't answered my question yet."
Chen Ji remained calm, his face showing no emotion: "We are a legally married couple."
Xu Ruantang: "???"
"If others find out, it will have a bad impact on me." Chen Ji looked somewhat uneasy and tried to avoid looking into Xu Ruantang's eyes.
Xu Ruantang's reaction was much calmer; she had actually guessed this earlier.
Too.
If others knew that Chen Jigang and his wife were living in separate rooms right after getting married, the gossip would probably drown him.
If they openly put a bed in their study, it's hard to guarantee that no one will come over and no one will see it.
Chen Ji is a man, and men care about their image.
As for the godmother, the older generation tends to be traditional, and if she finds out, she might misunderstand and think they're having a conflict.
