Chapter 84 You're not spying on me, are you?

Xu Ruantang originally planned to wait until the rain subsided before leaving, take the bus back, and then run back to the compound gate.

The rain shows no signs of letting up. I was thinking of gritting my teeth and buying an umbrella, but when I asked the price, the only umbrellas available in the market were Paradise umbrellas, which cost eighteen yuan each!

Forget it, she'd rather get soaked on her way back.

She had just raised her hand, ready to rush into the rain, when she saw a familiar figure walking towards her in the distance.

The man was tall and slender, and despite walking in the wind and rain, his refined demeanor remained unaffected. His fingers, holding the umbrella, were long and elegant.

"Chen Ji, over here!" Xu Ruantang waved excitedly at him, her fair face slightly flushed.

What she saw wasn't Chen Ji, but a real eighteen yuan!

Chen Ji took a long stride and walked to her side in a few steps. His deep black eyes stared at her, and his voice was unusually low and husky: "Why don't you buy an umbrella?"

He just saw her about to rush into the rain. In such heavy rain, was she planning to get soaked on her way back?

How stupid!

The umbrella tilted overhead, with most of it reaching over Xu Ruantang's head.

Xu Ruantang beamed, her eyes sparkling: "You're here now, thank goodness I didn't buy anything!"

"Here you go." Chen Ji handed the umbrella to her.

Xu Ruantang obediently reached out and took it, "Let's go home!"

As she spoke, she stood beside Chen Ji, holding up her umbrella.

She mistakenly thought he asked her to get the umbrella?

Chen Ji's eyes flickered, and he quickly took off his coat and handed it to Xu Ruantang, saying gently, "Wear this, don't catch a cold."

Xu Ruantang waved her hands repeatedly, "No, no, I'm not cold."

Chen Ji was dressed casually when she went out, and the coat she was wearing seemed completely inappropriate.

Chen Ji pursed his lips and remained silent. He stretched out his long arm and draped the clothes over her shoulders. Before she could react, the man took the umbrella from her hand.

"Let's go home."

The man had a deep, resonant voice and a calm expression.

As the two walked in the rain, Xu Ruantang noticed that Chen Ji's umbrella was almost poking right in front of her eyes.

She looked up and glanced at his left shoulder, which was mostly wet.

With a soft sigh, Xu Ruantang moved closer to him, the two almost touching.

She looked up at him and said, "I'll sit next to you, so you can hold the umbrella properly."

A faint fragrance wafted from his side, the scent of a woman, and Chen Ji's fingers, gripping the umbrella, trembled slightly.

After a long pause, he said in a low voice, "Okay."

They took the bus home, and it started raining right around rush hour. People who usually ride bicycles were now taking the bus instead.

The bus was packed with people. Xu Ruantang, holding her wine, stood cautiously in a corner.

When she turned around, she found Chen Ji standing behind her, his arm resting on the armrest, also looking down at her.

Those long, narrow peach blossom eyes held emotions she couldn't understand.

For some reason, Xu Ruantang felt that Chen Ji was very different today.

So she asked in a low voice, "Aren't you coming back tomorrow?"

"Yeah, I drove myself, so I rushed a bit." Chen Ji's eyes held a faint smile, and his voice was gentle.

Before him was a delicate, fair face. When the young woman looked up, he could see her misty eyes.

Chen Ji's Adam's apple bobbed twice, and he slowly looked away.

Driving is difficult in the rain, and buses always sway and shake. Along the way, you can always hear everyone groaning in unison.

Thanks to Chen Ji, Xu Ruantang was able to stay firmly in the corner.

The rain had stopped by the time the two got out of the car.

The rain came quickly and went quickly, as if it were deliberately arranged by God.

"Here are your clothes." Xu Ruantang noticed the occasional glances from those around her, and looking down, she realized she was still wearing Chen Ji's coat.

Chen Ji didn't answer, slowly turning his gaze away, "You're wearing it, I'm hot."

Xu Ruantang: "......"

As expected of a soldier, he was exceptionally fit; she was actually shivering from the cold.

On the way, Xu Ruantang told him about how her grandmother, elder brother, and sister-in-law had come to visit the day before.

Chen Jiyu said apologetically, "I'm sorry, I can explain this."

He knew the letter of introduction was inaccurate, but he had never said a word about it before.

Right now, I really want to take the initiative to clarify things, but a sense of unease is creeping into my heart.

Xu Ruantang's lips curled up slightly, her smile radiant and beautiful. "No need to explain. I'm just letting you know. You don't need to explain to me."

She thought for a moment and continued, "But let's keep in touch later, just to avoid any more trouble."

"good."

Chen Ji answered quickly.

Xu Ruantang thought for a moment, "How did you know I was taking shelter from the rain there? You wouldn't... be spying on me, would you?"

Chen Ji was stunned for a moment, then turned to look at her and found that her face was full of smiles.

"Aunt Liu told me that; I wasn't spying on you."

Chen Ji answered in a very serious manner.

His answer went unanswered; the woman lowered her eyelashes, a faint smile playing on her lips.

"Have you got a meal yet?"

His heart was pounding irregularly in his chest, but he didn't say anything more and changed the subject.

Xu Ruantang shook her head. "Let's eat at home."

Chen Ji opened his mouth, but before he could say a word, he was interrupted.

"Commander Chen! Little Xu!"

The two looked up at the same time and saw the woman walking not far away. Xu Ruantang's eyes curved into a smile.

A heavy rain had just passed, and the ground was still wet.

The rain did not affect the children in the compound at all. They ran around, splashing water and mud onto their trouser legs, their laughter echoing throughout.

"Commander Chen, you're finally back!" Zhang Li's belly wasn't big, probably out of habit, and she carefully placed her hand on her stomach.

She approached the two of them, her tone exaggerated, "Commander Chen, if you don't come back soon, Xiao Xu's tears will flood our compound."

"Sister-in-law, what are you saying?"

"What kind of new way of greeting is this?" Xu Ruantang looked at Chen Ji, puzzled. The two exchanged a glance.

"Oh, of course I'm talking about you. Look how sorry Commander Chen is." Zhang Li took in Chen Ji's reaction and continued with a smile, "Look, you've only been away for two days, and Xiao Xu is like she's lost her soul. You don't know how pitiful she looked sitting here all alone yesterday."

Xu Ruantang sighed softly, her smile forced.

This is quite a misunderstanding. She was thinking about Chen Ji, but she was thinking about how to guard against him and stay away from him!

It would be awkward if he misunderstood that I had feelings for him.

"Sister-in-law, are you out for a walk?"

The only option now is to change the subject.

Zhang Li nodded, and Xu Ruantang quickly said, "Then you can walk slowly, we'll go back first."

As she was speaking, she tried to walk past Zhang Li, but Zhang Li grabbed her arm. "What's the rush? Your sister-in-law has something to tell you. Let's go sit over there. There's a pavilion there, so we won't get wet in the rain."

Xu Ruantang glanced at Chen Ji with a look of utter despair. "Why don't you go back first?"

She winked secretly, thinking that Chen Ji must understand her hint! She couldn't refuse, but he could take her away!
