"Aunt, I may not be able to pick many. Last year, many people came here to pick them."
"It's okay, whatever you have is enough."
Sun Jiaxue knew that the grass beads had been picked once, and how many to pick depended on luck.
She met many villagers on the way and greeted them one by one with a smile.
"Ming Qing wife, where are you going in the middle of the day?"
"Sister-in-law, go take a look at the pond in front."
"Why go there? It's just the beginning of spring and there's probably nothing there."
"I heard there are grass beads over there. I'll go see if I can pick some."
"Of course they can. I saw quite a few when I passed by there the other day."
The person who spoke was the village chief's daughter-in-law, Wu Tong. She seemed easy to get along with and gentle.
Walking with Li Tong was the village chief’s son Li Mingfu.
After a few brief greetings, Sun Jiaxue took the two children and walked towards the pond.
Looking at her back, Wu Tong said, "You know what, Ming Qing's wife is really pretty. Just now when I came to work, Xiang Xia told me that Ming Qing's wife was a shrew and asked me to stay away from her."
"Just listen to Xiang Xia's words and don't take them seriously. She's just jealous."
Wu Tong smiled and said, "Don't say she's jealous. I'm quite envious anyway."
"Why are you envious? I hold you dear to my heart. No one in the village didn't envy you."
Li Mingfu said this with great confidence.
After all, his father is the village chief, and he lives better than most people in the village.
His mother passed away a few years ago. Without the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, Wu Tong's life is very comfortable.
It took two hours for Sun Jiaxue to bring Li Erniu and Li Sanniu home.
"Aunt, let's go back to the house first."
"Wait a moment, share this steamed bun among you. I'll thank you for accompanying me."
Most of the steamed buns are made of white flour, with only a little corn flour mixed in.
The two children thought it was an ordinary corn bun and accepted it obediently.
"Dad, Mom, we're back. This is the steamed bun my aunt gave me."
"There are pickles on the table, let's go and eat."
Li Erniu broke the steamed bun into two and handed it to Li Sanniu. After they took a bite, their eyes lit up.
"This steamed bun is really delicious, better than the one my mother makes."
"Yes, I'll go and let Mom taste it and see why the steamed buns made by my aunt are so delicious."
Li Sanniu came to Li Lizhu holding a steamed bun and said, "Mom, try it. It's delicious."
Li Lizhu took a small symbolic bite.
Of course it tastes good. It’s all made of fine white flour, so how could it not taste good? But it doesn’t make your throat ache without cornmeal.
“Will it be delicious?”
"Sanniu, you and your sister can eat slowly, but you can't tell anyone that your aunt gave you steamed buns."
"Mom, we know."
After saying that, he sat at the table and ate the steamed bun with relish.
After all, the two children were young, so they only ate half of it, leaving more than half left.
When Li Mingqing came back, Sun Jiaxue was clearing the grass beads.
"Wife, what are you busy with?"
"Brother Mingqing is back. I plan to make a curtain to put on the door."
"So virtuous, look what I brought back."
Sun Jiaxue looked up and saw two canned fruit bottles in his hands.
"Come in and try it to see if it tastes good."
Li Mingqing pulled her up and walked into the house.
The can was opened before Sun Jiaxue could stop it.
"Brother Mingqing, please screw the lid back on quickly. I heard it can't be stored for a long time once it's opened."
"How can you open it and then screw it back on? Even if you screw it back on, it won't work."
He poured out most of it into a bowl and placed it in front of Li Jiaxue, as if she had to eat it.
Although he didn't like canned food, people of that era considered it a rarity, so his young wife had to try it. She had definitely never eaten it before because of the hard life she had lived.
Sun Jiaxue picked up a piece with chopsticks and fed it to Li Mingqing first.
"Brother Mingqing eats first."
"I don't like it, you eat it yourself."
Sun Jiaxue's eyes widened when she heard this. Who wouldn't like to eat expensive food? How could canned food be so expensive and not taste good?
She took a small bite and found it delicious.
The golden canned yellow peaches are sweet, and you can tell that a lot of sugar is added into them as soon as you taste them.
"How's it going?"
"It's delicious and sweet, much better than fruit candy."
"Okay, eat more if you like. These are all yours."
Li Mingqing pushed the can in front of her and took out a small plate of strawberries.
"Strawberries, I think they taste better than canned ones."
She had never seen such big, juicy strawberries before. She had only seen small wild strawberries in the mountains or fields before.
Seeing her standing there in a daze, Li Mingqing directly took one and fed it to her mouth.
The two of them ate a small plate of food back and forth.
"I see you haven't collected many grass beads. They probably won't be enough for door curtains."
"It's not enough. Let's save it first. Maybe there are some elsewhere. I'll go out and look around tomorrow."
Li Mingqing thought for a moment and said, "Hongbin's family might have some. I'll go get some."
"Isn't this bad?"
"What's wrong with that? It's not like I'm asking for it empty-handed. I'll just take you there with me, some potatoes and sweet potatoes. Auntie's always been talking about you, and she's worried you'd be embarrassed to come home and see you."
I put two potatoes and two sweet potatoes in the basket and went to Zhao Hongbin's house.
What a coincidence, I met Xu Dagou on the road.
He was holding a basin in his hand and his feet were covered in mud. He probably went to the river to catch fish to provide Wang Dahua with nutrition and help her produce milk.
After seeing Li Mingqing, he immediately turned around and ran away.
