Chapter 50 Heavy Snow

The whole sky was covered in white.

The snowflakes kept falling all night long.

Jiang Lan finally saw the snow covering the mountain. She screamed with excitement and ran out of the yard, leaving footprints all the time.

Snow about a foot thick is perfect for rolling snowballs.

The kids didn't know the skills and just kept rolling around like a blanket.

While their younger brothers and sisters were playing snowball fights and building snowmen, Jiang Yun and Wang Hailiu secretly set out for the hunting spot.

The snow was a little deep, and they left footprints along the way.

Jiang Yun walked for a while and then looked back to see if anyone was catching up with him.

"Liu'er, these footprints are too obvious," Jiang Jun said to Wang Hailiu by name. "We've already walked two miles, and I can even see the first footprint. Will Xiaolan Dongzi and the others catch up?"

Wang Hailiu waved his hand: "The snow is still falling, it will cover the footprints soon."

Jiang Jun hesitated. The snow grew deeper the further she climbed, from calf-deep to knee-deep. Lifting her legs high the whole way was incredibly tiring. She was climbing barehanded, without any climbing gear or weapons. If a wild animal fell into a trap, she and Liu'er wouldn't be able to retrieve it.

Jiang Yun tried to persuade Wang Hailiu to return: "We released that pheasant yesterday. If it's not frozen to death, it must be frozen stiff. With such heavy snow, no animal would escape, right?"

Wang Hailiu urged again: "Come on, I'll teach you to speak Xian on the way! Then you can pretend to be a Xian person who doesn't understand Chinese, and see others call you stupid in front of you!"

In Tongcheng near the Lujiang River, people basically speak both Chinese and Xian. People on the other side of the river are proud to learn Chinese. Some villagers even secretly cross the mountains to come to Tongcheng to make a living.

Jiang Jun rolled his eyes and reluctantly agreed.

Suddenly, Wang Hailiu's expression became excited: "Xiaojun, listen!"

A painful roar came from the air.

Jiang Yun looked around with wide eyes, vigilantly observing whether there were any living animals rushing towards them.

Wang Hailiu rushed forward excitedly: "Go, go, go! That's the sound of a blind bear! He must have fallen into the well!"

Jiang Jun huddled closer to her scarf, wiping her hands which were clenched in the muff. She found that her palms began to sweat, and her heart began to beat faster.

Wang Hailiu rushed forward with full force. The closer he got to the trap, the clearer his screams of pain became.

A female bear fell into the trap. She was out looking for food before the heavy snow fell. She saw the pheasant tied to a tree and huddled together. She fell into the pit with sharp branches, which pierced her legs and feet. She couldn't move and kept wailing.

Jiang Jun watched Wang Hailiu approach the trap, extremely anxious. He didn't care about the cold wind that was biting his face and hands like a knife. He took his hand out and put it to his mouth and shouted, "Liu'er, don't go over there, be careful~!"

Wang Hailiu turned around and waved excitedly: "Come on, come on, it can't move!"

Jiang Jun had a bad feeling. The black bear was going to hibernate, and it was coming out to look for food at this time. It must be extremely hungry!

The sound of danger alarm reminded her not to go any further.

Jiang Jun closed his eyes, quietly capturing the movements besides the sound of flying snowflakes and the roar of the black bear.

There was a sound of four-legged animals running in the snow.

Jiang Yun suddenly opened his eyes.

This look showed that something was wrong: "Liu'er, there's movement up ahead!"

Wang Hailiu was only a few steps away from the trap and could even see the dark hole where the trap had collapsed. The joy of successfully setting the bait for the first time made him ignore the movements around him.

When he stopped and looked, he saw two bear cubs running towards the mother bear's howling less than a hundred meters away.

These two little bears are not small either. When they stand up, they are as tall as a person.

Wang Hailiu immediately realized that this must be the mother bear's cub. He immediately turned around and ran away, waving his hands and shouting, "There's a bear! Run!"

The situation took a sharp turn for the worse and the style of painting changed suddenly.

Jiang Yun and Wang Hailiu became the targets of the little bear.

The forest is the world of animals. No matter how slowly the little bear runs, it will not be slower than a human.

Jiang Jun gritted her teeth and ran back. Fortunately, she had been insisting on doing plank exercises and her physical strength was getting better and better. Otherwise, she wouldn't even be able to lift her legs at this moment.

Wang Hailiu ran and shouted, "There's a bear! Help! Help!"

His physical strength was truly extraordinary. He actually caught up with Jiang Yun and pulled her arm forward, "Xiao Yun, run!"

Jiang Yun staggered as he was pulled. "Let go, I'll fall!"

If I fall, I will definitely not be able to get up!

Wang Hailiu looked back and saw that the little bear smelled their scent, or perhaps the mother bear gave some instructions. In any case, the little bear kept chasing after them.

Getting closer and closer, only less than fifty meters away!

Covered in heavy snow, no branches or sticks could be seen, and climbing trees was impossible as they were covered in ice.

Jiang Jun put his gloves into the muff, stopped, closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His vision went dark, his mouth was dry, and his limbs were burning with pain.

Wang Hailiu was extremely anxious: "How about I pretend to be dead here, and you leave quickly. I can hold my breath."

Jiang Jun took a few deep breaths and finally opened his eyes: "Let's go together!"

Playing dead to avoid a black bear attack is just a fairy tale, okay?

The two of them have been running away for so long, their family must have discovered them. At this time, maybe their uncles will come out to look for them. As long as they see their footprints, they will know their whereabouts.

What if my uncle is particularly clever and comes out with a gun?

Thinking of this, Jiang Jun regained his strength and ran back along the same path he came from.

After running a few steps, a miracle happened.

Two figures appeared in front, they were Zhang Jinxi and Zhang Jinbao, one of them holding a hunting rifle, chasing after them in the snow.

Wang Hailiu's voice trembled with excitement: "Xiaojun, it's my eldest and second cousins! We are saved!"

Jiang Jun gritted her teeth and said nothing. She had to gather all her strength and keep running. She could only breathe a sigh of relief when she reached her uncle's side.

Zhang Jinxi and Zhang Jinbao also quickened their pace to meet him. When they met up with Jiang Jun and Wang Hailiu, the little black bear was less than ten meters away from Jiang Jun.

In the blink of an eye, Zhang Jinxi raised his hunting rifle, aimed at the little black bear, and bang!

Zhang Jinbao also pulled the trigger.

Both black bears fell to the ground injured.

Zhang Jinxi loaded bullets into the gun chamber and prepared to fire again.

Jiang Jun raised his hands to shield his eyes, not daring to look back: "Uncle, they didn't hurt me!"

Zhang Jinxi raised his gun: "We can't let them go, this is such a good opportunity!"

This is not hunting, this is about saving people!

Two more gunshots were heard, and Jiang Jun's head began to buzz. Shadows flashed before his eyes, and he heard many miserable cries.

She ran into the house with her head covered, greeted Hong Guizhen, and lay down on the kang, squeezing together with Jiang Lan, and slept soundly.
