8. Grief
The Chen Mansion was decorated with lights and colors to welcome the princess.
The entire street in front of the door was covered with red confetti, which sprinkled on the white snow on the roof, like plum blossoms and blood spots.
Madam Ye sent someone over to explain, "We're too busy to handle all the guests. Madam, please rest in your room! I also asked you to tie up the dog tightly so it doesn't run out and scare the princess or disturb the guests."
Jiang Yufen responded softly, stood in the yard staring at the roof for a while, then quietly went back to the house, changed into a neat short-sleeved shirt and trousers, put on a wide and large long cotton robe, put on a cloak, held the hot water bottle, and slowly walked towards the greenhouse.
From the outside, there was no sign of pregnancy at all.
All the flowers and plants in the greenhouse had been moved away, leaving only Lai Fu and Lai Gui lying on the ground bored.
Soon, her personal maid came running over in a hurry, "Miss, the eldest and second sons have gone out with their cousins to welcome the bride. The carriage you ordered is parked outside. The driver said there's going to be another snowstorm soon. If we don't leave now, we might not be able to get to the manor before dark."
Jiang Yufen took a quick look around the greenhouse, and without any further attachment, she fastened the hood, and together with the maidservant opened the small door in the corner of the greenhouse and went out.
She ordered a light, oil-walled carriage.
When she was two arrows away from the city gate, she heard the sound of a drum band.
The driver stopped the car and let the driver move to the side of the road, saying enviously, "Oh, I heard the groom is marrying a princess."
Jiang Yufen couldn't help but secretly lift the curtain a little.
There was a team of tall horses, with Chen Zijing in a red robe at the head. She smiled and nodded to the people on both sides of the street who were watching the fun and greeting them. Her eyes swept over the carriage she was riding in and passed by without stopping.
Her heart suddenly ached, and then her whole body seemed to be hollowed out, and she lost consciousness. She didn't even know when the carriage started moving.
After walking only five miles out of the city gate, snowflakes began to fly all over the sky.
The carriage moved slower and slower.
The little maidservant was anxious: "Miss, the wind and snow are too strong. If it continues like this, I'm afraid we won't be able to walk far. Why don't we find an inn to rest first?"
Jiang Yufen gritted her teeth: "No, keep going!"
She wanted to be as far away from the capital as possible.
This is a sad place, she never wants to come back.
The little maid emphasized again: "It's cold in the car, you'll freeze!"
Jiang Yufen insisted: "It will be warmer if you hold Laigui."
Her flowers are gone, and Lai Fu Lai Gui cannot stay.
Lai Fu and Lai Gui are the closest to Jiang Yufen. Although they are usually fierce, they are extremely docile at this time and let Jiang Yufen stick to them for warmth.
"Driver, speed up a bit, I'll give you more money!" Jiang Yufen slowly recovered, knowing that the people in the mansion would soon discover she was missing: "Don't take the official road, try to take the small road."
People were coming and going on the official road, and you could tell where she was going by following her and looking at the wheel tracks.
The driver didn't dare take the risk: "It's the end of the year, and there are many refugees and thieves. I heard there are robbers in the middle of the night. It's safer to take the main road."
The wind and snow are getting stronger.
The carriage she was riding in had only traveled one mile in half an hour.
Jiang Yufen gritted her teeth and said, "Driver, sell me the horse and I'll ride it myself."
The little maidservant was afraid: "Miss, you must not do that. You are weak, what if you get hurt?"
I heard from Banxian that her eldest daughter is pregnant with a pair of daughters. She must take good care of herself so that they can be born safely. No matter how much effort she puts in, she will not be able to keep them safe.
We have to ride horses against the wind at this time. I'm afraid that either the adults or the children are in trouble.
Jiang Yufen jumped off the carriage and took off the pair of twisted gold bracelets on her wrists and gave them to the driver: "Here are the horse money. You can find a way to tow the carriage back to the city."
The driver made a lot of money and was beaming with joy. He untied the reins and handed them to the maid.
Jiang Yufen stepped onto the cart board, mounted the saddle, and called out to the maid, "Put Lai Fu and Lai Gui on the ground."
Lai Fu Lai Gui is a genuine snow wolfdog. He is not afraid of the cold and loves snow and ice the most. He will start to have fun as soon as he jumps out of the car.
The driver was startled: "There's a wolf!"
It happened so fast that the horse Jiang Yufen was riding saw a wolfhound for the first time. It neighed and started running wildly.
Jiang Yufen later rode horses several more times with Chen Ziyue and Xu Zitao. Her riding skills improved greatly and she was no longer afraid of startled horses. She knew that as long as she shouted Lai Fu and Lai Gui to stop during the process, everything would be fine. As long as they ran for a distance, the horses would naturally stop when they were tired.
It’s a pity that she underestimated her strength after becoming pregnant.
The veil she was wearing was blown tightly around her mouth and nose by the strong wind, making it impossible for her to whistle.
Lai Fu and Lai Gui just thought of it as hunting, and followed the horse excitedly, not leaving its side for a moment.
The frightened horse rushed forward in the wind and snow.
The poor little maid fell on the carriage, and in a blink of an eye, she disappeared from sight. She couldn't chase them, nor could she go back to the city.
The driver was delighted, as this was a one-for-one exchange: "I don't have a wife yet, so come home with me!"
The little maidservant was frightened and jumped off the carriage to chase after him. However, she was too thin and fell to the ground after a few steps. Thinking of the refugees and thieves the coachman had mentioned, she struggled to stand up.
A long whip came over, wrapped around the little maid's arm, and pulled her up: "Where is the eldest young lady?"
The little maidservant seemed to see a savior: "Second Master, the eldest lady's horse is frightened!"
Chen Ziyue didn't bother to ask any more questions. He took back the whip and swung it at the horse's butt: "Chase!"
The two horses rushed forward like arrows.
Jiang Yufen was finding it increasingly difficult to ride on the horse. The snowflakes hitting her eyelids made it almost impossible for her to open her eyes.
The hands holding the reins were so cold that they lost feeling, and the body was shaken so much that he almost fell off the horse.
The snow was vast and the road ahead was endless. She couldn't see where the way out was.
Just when she couldn't hold on any longer and was about to give up, a whistle sounded behind her. Lai Fulaigui jumped up and stopped the horse she was riding. The horse was frightened again, raised its front hooves high, and almost stood upright.
Jiang Yufen could no longer hold on and could not sit still, and fell straight down.
Now, even if she didn't want to give up, she could only leave it to fate.
Chen Ziyue and Xu Zitao jumped off their horses and surrounded her, reaching out to pull her up: "Jiang Feng, it's so snowy, why are you running outside?"
The moment Jiang Yufen fell to the ground, she felt like she was falling into an icy cave: "The child is gone!"
She was so cold that she lost consciousness, but she knew clearly that she was bleeding from under her body.
Chen Ziyue didn't hear clearly: "Hurry up and get up, the ground is cold, be careful not to freeze, you are afraid of cold anyway."
Jiang Yufen's tears rolled down her temples: "Let me die together."
Chen Ziyue leaned over and asked, "What?"
Jiang Yufen was exhausted: "The child is gone."
Chen Ziyue looked down in surprise.
I saw red bloodstains slowly seeping out on the vast white snow.
