Chapter 76 Farewell

The tense atmosphere in the division headquarters became even more solemn after the emergency meeting.

Jiang Jun returned home and put the two boxes of books into his room and locked them. He wanted to talk to Jiang Yonghua for a few more words, but he saw that Jiang Yonghua had already packed his backpack.

"Dad, are you leaving now?" Jiang Jun thought there was no time.

"As soon as the reveille sounds, I will go to the division headquarters to assemble." Jiang Yonghua shook his head gently: "Xiao Lan is asleep, there are some things I need to make clear to you."

Jiang Jun listened patiently as Jiang Yonghua explained every detail of daily life, including where to get supplies and who to turn to for help when encountering difficulties. Finally, when he mentioned how he would help Jiang Lan study hard and get good grades in the graduation exam, he suddenly asked, "Dad, Jiang Lan still has more than two months until her graduation exam!"

Jiang Yonghua looked at his daughter silently.

Jiang Jun glanced at the ticking alarm clock. It was almost one o'clock, with only three and a half hours left. She wrote a string of numbers on a blank piece of paper on the table and whispered, "Dad, can you tell me what's going on?"

Jiang Yonghua asked in surprise: "You can?"

Jiang Jun nodded and wrote a few more words on the paper: Can I not go?

Jiang Yonghua shook his head.

Jiang Jun whispered, "Tonight, Uncle Qi asked me if I wanted to join the army. I said yes, and he told me to wait for news."

"I know about this. He greeted me."

"If you don't come back, will I lose my job?" The subtext is that if you don't come back, I will no longer be a family member, and I will not be able to enjoy any preferential treatment and there will be no backdoor.

Jiang Yonghua suddenly understood that if he couldn't return, his family would become martyr's relatives and would have to leave the army and return to their hometowns. Thinking of this, he couldn't help but clench his teeth, revealing a look of pain.

Jiang Yun wrote on the paper: Find a way to terminate the mission! You must come back! Xiaolan and I both need a father!

The room fell into silence, and the breathing of the father and daughter was barely audible.

Jiang Yonghua didn't say anything. He took the paper Jiang Yun had written the numbers and questions on and went to the kitchen to stuff it into the stove. He lit it with a match and watched the paper burn to ashes. He returned to the dining table and said, "Xiaojun, go to sleep and exercise. We'll be relying on you from now on."

Jiang Jun stood up, raised his head slightly, looked into Jiang Yonghua's eyes, and said softly, "Dad, you must come home safely! Xiaolan and I will be waiting for you to come back and take us to the capital!"

The hypnotic voice made Jiang Yonghua nod involuntarily.

Jiang Jun smiled: "Dad, please go and come back safely!"

Seeing Jiang Yonghua nod again, Jiang Jun went back to his room to rest with peace of mind.

Lying in bed, Jiang Yun couldn't fall asleep.

From several situations she discovered in the confidential office, she analyzed and inferred that Jiang Yonghua was resisting the mission.

She didn't know what the string of numbers just now meant. She was just trying to figure out what kind of fatal mission it was based on the changes in Jiang Yonghua's expression.

Even though Jiang Yonghua didn't reveal anything, Jiang Jun still came to the conclusion that the issuance of this mission was wrong in itself.

Unfortunately, it is simply wishful thinking to want to stop Jiang Yonghua from going on the mission.

She was just an insignificant family member. She couldn't even deal with Zhang Xiuying, so she could only use Jiang Yonghua's hand to get rid of her and stay away from her.

Her future is still uncertain, and her fate still depends on Jiang Yonghua.

She couldn't bear to see anything happen to Jiang Yonghua.

Therefore, she could only take advantage of Jiang Yonghua's indecisive nature.

I hope her method will be useful!

When the wake-up call sounded, Jiang Jun pulled the quilt up to cover his head and plugged his ears tightly with his fingers.

That way, she wouldn't hear the door open and close.

After being silent like an ostrich for a while, Jiang Jun couldn't stand it anymore and stuck his head out.

The routine reading of red articles began on the loudspeaker.

Jiang Jun thought of the paper ashes in the stove, got up to light the fire and make breakfast, and called Jiang Lan to get up: "Xiao Lan, it's dawn, get up and study!"

Jiang Lan, who usually stays in bed and likes to pretend to be asleep, replied, "It's May Day holiday, so I don't have to go to school!"

"Ah? Holiday? Then are you still having breakfast?" Jiang Jun threw the firewood stick and said, "If you're not hungry, I'll go to bed!"

After staying up all night, I finally feel a little tired.

Jiang Lan got up and shouted, "I'm hungry, I'm hungry, I want to eat steamed buns!"

Jiang Yun yawned and stretched, "You don't know how to make steamed buns. Drink some water and go back to sleep."

Jiang Lan jumped down, buttoned her clothes, and ran to the outer room to pull the door: "Sister, did our father just go out after blowing the reveille? The door is locked." She opened the window skillfully and jumped out. She used the key hanging around her neck to open the padlock on the front door, pushed the door open, bolted the window, and closed the door: "Sister, it's just the two of us at home. Dad said we can go to the cadres' canteen to get food. Take me there later!"

Jiang Jun muttered in annoyance, "Greedy cat, just thinking about eating!"

Jiang Lan was still excited and didn't mind at all: "I heard that the meat buns in the cadre cafeteria are especially delicious, sister, don't you miss them?"

"Take out your lunch box and wash it." Jiang Jun was of course thinking about the meat buns, milk, and eggs. "Bring back lunch and dinner later so you don't have to cook."

Jiang Jun rode his bicycle with Jiang Lan and ran to the division headquarters cafeteria to get food.

She specially filled an enamel cup with milk and bought ten steamed buns and two meat buns.

He carefully packed the buns in a net bag and carried it with him. Jiang Lan followed beside him, cheering and jumping for joy, wishing she could just hold the buns in her hands and start eating them.

Jiang Jun refused: "Go home and eat at the dinner table!"

What a joke! Jiang Yonghua is not here, but she is the parent!

Just as she put the net bag in the bicycle basket, Chen Yuanwu came over and called her, "Xiaojun!"

He already knew that Jiang Yonghua was going out on a mission and that only two sisters were left in the Jiang family.

Jiang Jun hadn't slept all night, and there were faint dark circles under his eyes. "Squad Leader Chen, good morning!"

Chen Yuanwu smiled and said, "Today the General Political Department Song and Dance Troupe is performing in the auditorium. I have tickets. Do you want to go and see it?"

"Huh?" Jiang Jun thought he was going to ask about the test paper. She just wanted to go home and have a good sleep. "Daytime or night?"

Chen Yuanwu: "In a while, the show starts at nine o'clock."

Jiang Jun was a little hesitant. Jiang Yonghua had just left, and not only did there not appear the expected sad farewell, but she and Jiang Lan went to watch a singing and dancing show right after. How heartless!

Jiang Lan jumped up and said, "Yes! Sister, I want to go and see it! Wu Jing said her ticket is in the sixth row, middle seat 1!"

The seat numbers in the division headquarters' auditorium were different from those in current movie theaters. Number 1 was in the middle, with odd seats on the left and even seats on the right.

When watching the song and dance evening, those who can sit in the first row, seat 1, are all the highest-level leaders.

I thought my dad wouldn't be able to get a ticket since he was on a mission, but now someone's offering it to me, how could I refuse it? Jiang Lan also recognized Chen Yuanwu: "You are Chen Jing's older brother, right? Is your ticket for the first row?"
