Chapter 33: The Student

I don’t know how Jiang Yonghua negotiated with Zhang Xiuying. Jiang Jun slept soundly. When she got up early and went out, Zhang Xiuying didn’t even look at her.

In the early morning of winter, the breath turned into mist. The birch trees on the road had lost all their leaves and stood upright on both sides of the road.

Jiang Jun was in a good mood. He rode his bicycle and arrived at the division headquarters compound earlier than expected.

It was not yet time for breakfast, so Jiang Jun parked his bicycle in front of the propaganda column outside the division headquarters to read the newly updated version of the People's Liberation Army Daily.

In the praise column next to the newspaper, there are outstanding deeds of each regiment and company under the division headquarters, as well as a list of individuals who have been commended and rewarded.

Jiang Jun saw Chen Yuanwu's name, and he was listed as the second person to be commended in the recruit company.

The advanced deeds were roughly as follows: when the new recruits just joined the army, they sent a sick civilian to the hospital, saving lives and training at the same time; and during the field training, they performed well in various tests, including shooting with a good score of 95 rings out of ten bullets.

"Xiaojun, are you here?" Jiang Yonghua walked out of the office building holding a lunch bowl.

Jiang Jun smiled and responded, "Dad, I just got here a while ago."

Jiang Yonghua came over and asked: "What are you looking at?"

Jiang Jun pointed at the newspaper's bold black headline: "Establishing diplomatic ties with the African country of Guinea."

At that time, China had not yet regained its seat in the United Nations. The great leader took a diplomatic route of seeking support and recognition from Asian, African and Latin American countries. Establishing diplomatic relations with a country was exciting news.

Jiang Yonghua hadn't even had time to read the newspaper. He hadn't expected Jiang Yun to actually be interested in current affairs. He just talked about interesting topics: "Well, Africans are really dark, and their hair is curly."

Jiang Jun didn't say a word and followed Jiang Yonghua to the cafeteria. In her original time and space, she had lived in Africa for half a year.

There were very few people in the cadres' canteen, unlike the soldiers' canteen which was crowded.

Jiang Jun found a seat in the corner and sat down. Jiang Yonghua came over and said, "There's milk today. I bought you one. It's freshly boiled and still a little hot. There are also two eggs, both for you."

Jiang Yun refused: "Dad, you eat. You must be tired from working overtime."

"You'll be a teacher later, and that's going to be taxing on your brain. Eat more nutritious food." Jiang Yonghua genuinely cared about his daughter; he had neglected her too much in the past. "Keep your energy up, and show Teacher Chen what our little Jun can do."

Jiang Jun's eyes warmed up: "Okay, thank you, Dad!"

Jiang Yonghua laughed: "What are you thanking me for? You don't have to be so polite with Dad!"

Jiang Jun responded with a smile. It did seem strange that he used polite words with his family members.

The milk was just boiled without adding sugar, and paired with boiled eggs, it tasted a little fishy.

Jiang Jun found that she had probably been lacking oil and water for too long. Once the low-calorie, high-fiber steamed cornbread and sweet potato porridge diet meal became her daily diet, it could no longer arouse her enthusiasm.

Even the plain milk and eggs in front of her tasted extremely sweet to her.

Jiang Yonghua looked at his watch and said, "Let's go, it's almost time."

The shiny Plum watch reminded Jiang Jun of Cao Baosheng's broken watch that didn't work, and he couldn't help but smile.

Chen Zhong's guard appeared at the gate on time and took Jiang Yun to the small conference room.

The guards marched in standard step, and Jiang Jun, who followed behind, made final preparations for the meeting in his mind.

She had already thought about the meeting scene and conversation last night. After all, she had met other members of the Chen family. Combined with the information she had just seen on the bulletin board, after comprehensive analysis, she already had a general understanding of Chen Yuanwu in her mind.

When I pushed open the door of the small conference room, I saw Chen Zhong and Chen Yuanwu standing by the window talking. They turned around at the same time when they heard the door open.

Jiang Yun stepped forward and greeted Chen Zhong first: "Hello, Uncle Chen!"

Chen Zhong was delighted to see Jiang Yun: "My dear, you're here? Come, let me introduce you. This is the student I was talking about. His name is Chen Yuanwu."

Chen Yuanwu snapped to attention and saluted: "Teacher Jiang!"

Chen Yuanwu was wearing a brand new military uniform. He was nearly 1.8 meters tall, with a straight back, sharp eyebrows and bright eyes. Standing next to the serious and stern Chen Zhong, he looked even more youthful and energetic as a young soldier.

Jiang Jun subconsciously gave a professional headhunter's smile and nodded gently: "Captain Chen, just call me Xiaojun."

On the commendation notice posted earlier, Chen Yuanwu's title was "Squad Leader of Recruit Squad 2." She couldn't let anyone call her "Jiang Yun" (General) in front of Commander Chen, so she had to sacrifice her nickname.

Chen Yuanwu was slightly startled. The girl's reaction was a little beyond his expectations: "Xiaojun!"

Jiang Jun always felt that Chen Yuanwu looked at her with a strange look in his eyes, so he had to keep smiling.

Chen Zhong smiled. What a good girl! Seeing a stranger, she wasn't shy or afraid. She was very graceful and generous. She was neither humble nor arrogant. She was really generous. "My girl, now that we know each other, you can start the class. I have to go to a meeting."

Jiang Jun greeted with a smile: "Goodbye, Uncle Chen!"

After watching Chen Zhong leave, the guard closed the door of the small conference room. Jiang Jun turned around and saw Chen Yuanwu staring at her.

Jiang Jun scratched his forehead with his left finger and looked up at Chen Yuanwu: "Squad Leader Chen, please sit down. I'm getting nervous when you do this."

Chen Yuanwu looked down at Jiang Yun's beautiful eyes and was slightly startled: "Okay, Xiaojun, you sit down too."

Jiang Jun opened her schoolbag seemingly unintentionally, and every headhunting cell in her body was working. Even if she didn't look at Chen Yuanwu's every move, she could still receive his aura and understand his intentions.

She took out the math formulas she had copied from a book overnight and said, "Team Leader Chen, I'd like to ask you first, what's your level in math, physics, and chemistry?"

Small talk that gets straight to the point is the most effective.

Chen Yuanwu blushed: "I still remember what I learned in junior high school, but I hardly learned it in high school."

Jiang Jun was surprised: "Huh? Don't you have to take math, physics, and chemistry to get into university?"

Chen Yuanwu's face turned even redder. "For the Chinese Department exam, if you only look at the total score, my literature, history, and geography scores combined already exceed the admission score, but my math score is very low."

Jiang Jun looked at Chen Yuanwu and continued to analyze in his mind. It should be the case that a shy liberal arts man who joins the army is more emotional than rational. Why can't this be seen in Chen Yuanwu?

Chen Yuanwu sensitively noticed that Jiang Jun was scanning him like a radar, and he looked back.

His company commander of new recruits, Xiao Jianguang, was a scout and often taught them reconnaissance and counter-reconnaissance techniques.

The most direct way to counter reconnaissance face to face is to make eye contact.

Their eyes met, and they were both stunned.

Chen Yuanwu stared into Jiang Jun's eyes, as if trying to read her mind: "Xiaojun, my math, physics, and chemistry foundation is weak. Is it difficult to teach?"

Jiang Jun smiled. "It's okay, Captain Chen. I'm just asking. Don't worry, given enough time, as long as you can do addition and subtraction within ten, I can teach you."
