Chapter 45: Past Events

In 1937, the Anti-Japanese War broke out. Your grandfather and I used the family business as a cover to carry out underground work.

Your mother was only 4 years old at that time. Our superiors specially equipped us with a radio to contact the organization. The radio was managed by a couple, your grandparents.

They also brought their 6-year-old son as a cover, and that boy is your father.

Later, due to betrayal by a traitor, your grandfather and grandmother were exposed, and the organization asked them to evacuate quickly.

They insisted on destroying all the documents before evacuating. If they didn't, your grandfather, I, and even more comrades would be exposed.

Your grandparents asked us to take your father away first and evacuate after burning the documents. However, before we could evacuate, the Japanese arrived.

Your grandpa and grandma detonated the grenade and died together with the Japanese soldiers who rushed in.

Our superiors notified us to evacuate South City and continue to hide in North City.

We took your father and your mother back to Taipei, and we adopted your father.

Your grandfather is in charge of the entire underground work in Taipei City, and is responsible for the transportation and supply of food, ammunition, and medicine for our army. On the surface, he is a successful businessman.

Your father and your mother go to school in Taipei City, and Lao He is responsible for picking them up and dropping them off every day.

One day, they brought back a little boy who was about 10 years old and dressed in rags. He was Qin Junyi, Qin Yilan's father.

Your mother said that the little boy helped them drive away the beggar who stole her things, and she was indebted to her, so she insisted on keeping the little boy.

He also said that the little boy was so pitiful, begging for food at the school gate every day.

We couldn't persuade your mother, so we agreed to keep the child. We asked Lao He to investigate the child and found out that he was indeed a little beggar from the neighborhood, so we kept him.

Not only do we let Qin Junyi go with your parents, we also give him pocket money every month.

We give each child the same amount of pocket money every month and take care of them like our own children.

After studying for a few years, Qin Junyi said he didn't want to go to school anymore, so your grandfather asked him to manage a grain store.

Later, regular customers at the grain store reported that grain was often shortchanged, and your grandfather discovered that the weights had been tampered with. He asked you, Uncle He, to investigate secretly.

It was discovered that Qin Junyi often delivered food to a family on a regular basis, and the amount he delivered was quite a lot.

Not only is it enough for the family to eat, but they can also sell it so that the family can live a worry-free life.

That family was Qin Junyi's parents. Qin Junyi said he was an orphan and we adopted him because we felt sorry for him.

Unexpectedly, he not only has both parents, but also an older brother, two older sisters, and two younger brothers.

Qin Junyi was not a beggar at all back then. His family just lived a little hardship, but not to the point of begging.

It was his mother who heard from others that your grandfather was a kind person who often did charity work and adopted your father and treated him as his own son.

So, I came up with a bad idea and let Qin Junyi pretend to be a beggar. If he could be adopted by your grandfather, the whole family would benefit from it.

Let her other children pretend to be little beggars and rob your mother of her money, and then Qin Junyi will appear and drive them away, and he will become your mother's benefactor.

Then I pretended to be pitiful and hinted openly or covertly that we should adopt him so that he could get money from our family to support his family.

When he was a child, he gave all his pocket money to his family every month, and sometimes he even stole things from home and sold them.

When he grew up, he stole food and money from the store to support his family.

When your grandfather found out, he didn't let him manage the grain store. He begged him desperately, and your grandfather was soft-hearted. He thought that even though he had been cheated, he was still filial, so he let him do odd jobs in the bookstore.

He should never, ever have set his sights on your mother. He often approaches your mother intentionally or unintentionally, and even confesses his love to her and proposes to her.

At that time, your father and your mother were already a couple, so they rejected him.

His family came up with a disgusting idea. He lied to your mother and said that your father had an accident. Your mother did not suspect anything and followed him to a small courtyard.

When they arrived at that courtyard, he actually tried to force your mother to marry him by force, so that he could get your grandfather's property.

What he didn't know was that ever since he started getting closer to your mother, your grandfather had been asking Lao He to secretly protect your mother.

Lao He beat him up, and then your grandfather kicked him out and cut off all ties with him.

He also disappeared from our sight.

After liberation, your grandfather and I worked in Taipei for a few years. Later, due to work needs, your grandfather and I were transferred back to Beijing.

Once, your grandfather met an old comrade-in-arms, Zhang Heping, at a meeting. Your grandfather Zhang told your grandfather something.

Just after the liberation, Qin Junyi came to him and said that he was your grandfather's adopted son. Your grandfather was busy with work, so he came to your Grandpa Zhang to help find him a job.

Your Grandpa Zhang used to do underground work and was your grandfather's downline contact.

I met Qin Junyi when he was a guest at my house. Without thinking much about it, I found him a job at the machinery factory.

Your grandfather was very angry when he heard this, so he ran to the machinery factory to question Qin Junyi, asking him how he found Grandpa Zhang and why he used his name to seek personal gain.

Qin Junyi said that your grandfather kicked him out and he was left with nowhere else to go, so he worked as an accountant in a small grain store in Taipei City.

After liberation, he read in the newspaper that your grandfather was the deputy mayor of Taipei City, and he didn't dare to go find your grandfather.

He was a clever man and knew that your grandfather must have been an underground member of the Party before, otherwise he would not have become a senior Party cadre right after liberation.

He was thinking about whether he could help your grandfather find a good job by starting with his friends.

One time, he was reading the Huamin Daily and saw a photo of your Grandpa Zhang, who worked in the Ministry of Industry in Beijing.

He came to Beijing and found your Grandpa Zhang, and arranged for him to work in the machine factory at that time, which is now the machinery factory.

Your grandfather warned Qin Junyi that if he tried to gain benefits by using your grandfather's name again, he would have his entire family kicked out of Beijing.

Qin Junyi even came to the compound with some things in his hands to see me and your grandfather, but we didn't let him in.

Later, we directly told the comrades on duty at the door not to let his family in when they came.

When you were a child, I often took you to play in the park outside the compound. You loved swinging on the swing there the most. Once you started playing, you wouldn't even have time to eat.

Qin Yilan's grandmother often took her there to play, and that's how you and Qin Yilan got to know each other.

We didn't know at the time that they were Qin Junyi's mother and daughter, so we just let you play together.

Later I found out that the kid was a bad person. When you two played together, the kid often stole things from you and even almost pushed you into the lake once.
