Wen Ruan looked up and saw a man dressed in black under the starry night sky. He was tall and slender, with a cold and noble face, but his eyes were practically dripping with affection as he looked at her.
She could hardly believe her eyes, her gaze fixed on the man in front of her, her feet seemingly glued to the ground, too afraid to move.
"Ruan Ruan, I'm back." Song Yan smiled gently.
Song Yan's hands, hanging by his side, clenched tightly as he suppressed the urge to rush over and hug her.
But Wen Ruan didn't care about anything else. After finally confirming that the person in front of her was the one she had been longing for, she could no longer hold back and rushed over to hug him.
Ignoring the gatekeeper who was quietly watching from the sidelines, Song Yan reached out and hugged Wen Ruan.
"Why did it take you so long to get back!" Wen Ruan said, her eyes immediately welling up with tears.
After a long while, the two gradually calmed down.
"You've lost weight..."
"You've lost weight..."
The two spoke at the same time, and couldn't help but smile at each other.
Meanwhile, the gatekeeper stared at the two of them intently, as if watching a spectacle.
Song Yan was fortunate to have seen it all along, but he was thick-skinned and didn't think much of it. He had also seen Wen Ruan and the old man talking before, so the two should know each other.
But Wen Ruan only belatedly realized the scorching gaze behind her, and when she turned around, she saw it was the gatekeeper.
His face flushed red instantly, and he was filled with embarrassment.
So he pulled Song Yan forward: "Sir, this is my husband, Song Yan. He went on a business trip a few months ago and just got back..."
"Great! Young people are so energetic. Oh, back in my day..." The old man was about to launch into a long-winded monologue.
Wen Ruan gestured to Song Yan and quickly said to the old man, "Grandpa, we're leaving now. We just got off work and haven't eaten yet, we're still hungry..."
"Go quickly, go quickly, you kids, you just don't care about yourselves."
"Goodbye, sir." After saying that, Wen Ruan pulled Song Yan and ran quickly towards home, her steps light and quick.
On the way, Wen Ruan asked Song Yan when he had returned.
"I just got home this afternoon."
"How did you know I was here?" Wen Ruan asked.
"When I got back, I found no one home. I thought you must have gone out for summer vacation. I assumed you had gone back to the compound or the family quarters. I was just about to leave when I ran into my mother and mother-in-law."
"They told me you got the internship through a mentor's recommendation..."
Wen Ruan is working overtime tonight, and she even made a special call to the compound and her father's office to tell them that she would be going home late and that they didn't need to come over tonight.
Unexpectedly, the two still came together. Luckily, they ran into Song Yan when he returned, otherwise she would have had to wait for him at home for a long time. Wen Ruan looked at her watch; it was already past nine o'clock at night...
If she went home and was caught by her two mothers, they would definitely nag her for days. But luckily, when they saw Song Yan return, they thought that the young couple hadn't seen each other for a long time and didn't want to disturb them, so they turned around and left.
The two of them gave Song Yan a long lecture, telling him everything that had happened to Wen Ruan recently. He felt proud, heartbroken, and mostly guilty for not having enough time to spend with her and take care of her.
Upon hearing Song Yan's answer, Wen Ruan turned to look at him, her tone full of pride, and asked playfully, "Am I amazing?"
Song Yan looked at her intently, his deep eyes holding a hint of a smile, and nodded seriously: "Ruan Ruan is really amazing."
Hearing Song Yan's words, Wen Ruan shook her head shyly, her movements a little awkward: "Actually, it's not that bad, it's not that impressive. There are many big shots in the department, and they are all very capable. Not to mention, many people my age in our unit are also very outstanding."
“I’m still a long way from them, and I have a long way to go…” As she spoke, Wen Ruan became somewhat dejected. She used to have a good self-esteem, and at school, both her classmates and teachers paid close attention to her and recognized her abilities.
However, after arriving at her internship, she did experience a bit of a setback. She had always thought that as a modern person who had traveled from another time, she would have some advantages, but when she actually arrived, she found that the advantages she had previously thought of were simply insignificant.
She has to work twice as hard to catch up with, or even surpass, the younger people in her workplace.
Seeing Wen Ruan's somewhat dejected look, Song Yan reached out and rubbed her head. He was about to say something to comfort and encourage her when he saw her full of energy again and cheer up. He couldn't help but shake his head and laugh.
“Ruan Ruan is already doing a great job. After all, they got involved in these businesses much earlier than you, so they are definitely more familiar with them than you are. Don’t push yourself too hard, just do your best,” Song Yan comforted her.
"Yes, I will definitely work hard. I saw a leader in our unit participate in an important meeting and act as the interpreter for the big boss, while I was just sitting in the audience. She is really amazing. One day, I will be as professional and excellent as her!" Wen Ruan said confidently.
"I firmly believe this. Our Ruan Ruan is like a tenacious little grass, constantly taking root and then growing upwards."
The two looked at each other and smiled.
"By the way, why have you been in the training class for so long? Didn't you say it would last two months?" Wen Ruan asked curiously.
"Yes, there was a slight mishap, but thankfully things were resolved smoothly. We finished our graduation exams yesterday, and once the results are released, we can pack our bags and come back." Song Yan didn't elaborate.
Wen Ruan didn't ask in detail, but as soon as she heard that they still had a graduation exam, she immediately looked at Song Yan with a sympathetic gaze. You know, Wen Ruan had been tormented by exams for a while, and now she felt like getting goosebumps just hearing the word "exam".
Then, with a look of curiosity, she asked, "So, how did you do on the exam?" But as soon as the question left her mouth, Wen Ruan regretted it. She had forgotten that her man possessed a photographic memory; passing the exam would be a piece of cake...
After saying that, she glared at him again, a hint of jealousy in her eyes. Song Yan was completely bewildered...
