Chapter 160 Giving Up

Jiang Yan had only caught her breath for a short while when another doctor called her to continue helping.

Before leaving, he told Wen Ruan that she could rest for a while, find a place to sleep, and replenish her energy.

Wen Ruan slumped to the ground. Although she was exhausted both mentally and physically, she couldn't fall asleep at all.

She glanced at her watch. She had been there for over a day, and in those more than 24 hours, she was finally able to get some rest.

But for Jiang Yan and his group, this was just a normal routine...

But all of this seems insignificant compared to the ability to save one life after another...

Even now, Wen Ruan is still somewhat in shock...

It was the first time I had ever seen lives fall before my eyes. Despite everyone's best efforts, a sense of helplessness washed over me as lives were lost.

Before they could even break free from that profound sense of powerlessness, they had to throw themselves into the next round of life-saving operations.

Originally, Wen Ruan was terrified because it was her first time experiencing something like this. However, the long rescue work and the combined impact of physical and mental exhaustion gradually made her more and more numb. She even mechanically performed the actions according to Jiang Yan's instructions.

Wen Ruan stood up and, following the directions of the person next to her, prepared to collect basic living supplies. She only received two dry, hard pieces of black bread and a bottle of drinking water.

Wen Ruan looked around while mechanically biting into the very dry bread in her hand... The tense and busy period just now was almost over. The patients had been admitted, and the medical staff were able to catch their breath. They all lay sprawled on the dirty and messy ground to rest, not caring about their image.

Wen Ruan was worried about Andy and wanted to go find him to meet up. They had come together, and no matter what, they had to go back together.

So Wen Ruan walked out of the central building, stepping over patients who were lying on the ground because there were no beds available.

Wen Ruan met Andy in the tent on the far left. He was holding a bottle of water, but he hadn't even opened it. He was already asleep from exhaustion.

"Your friend?" asked one of the soldiers from Sa Kingdom who had come with Wen Ruan and the others.

“Yes, we are classmates from the same school,” Wen Ruan replied softly.

"You guys are great!" he said, giving Wen Ruan a thumbs up.

"Thank you very much for your help."

“But we’re not really of much use, are we?” Wen Ruan couldn’t help but ask.

“Anyone who can come here at this time is a hero. You are, and of course, so am I.” The soldier chuckled softly after saying this.

"Make sure your friend is alright, then leave quickly and find a place to rest. Don't come back here," the soldier kindly advised.

"Why?" Wen Ruan asked, puzzled, unsure of his meaning.

"This is the ward for the seriously wounded. To be precise, even if they are admitted by doctors, death is ultimately their fate..."

"Therefore, resources and medicines should be reserved for those with a better chance of survival, those who have a chance to live..."

Wen Ruan immediately understood what the soldiers meant: this area, and the people being moved into it, were... abandoned...

Wen Ruan felt a chill in her heart, somewhat frightened by the soldier's words, and stumbled back to the central tent.

Wen Ruan collapsed to the ground, panting heavily, her hands trembling as she clutched her pockets. She had thought that the training she had undergone in the past few days in Salvador would allow her to calmly face the passing of life; she had thought that, faced with the cruelty of war, though angry and powerless, she was strong enough. But alas, all of this was just what she thought...

"Dear Wen, are you alright?" A doctor walked up to Wen Ruan, his eyes filled with worry, and asked with concern.

Wen Ruan had seen this person before. She was the doctor Wen Ruan saw as soon as she entered the room. Later, she heard that she was the most experienced pediatrician in the room and was quite famous in the area.

"It's alright, Grace. Thank you so much for your concern." Wen Ruan shook her head, her hands trembling as she opened the bottle of mineral water and took a big gulp.

"Is this the first time you've seen a scene like this? Are you scared?" Grace asked gently, sitting down next to Wen Ruan as if she wanted to have a deep conversation with her.

“Yes.” Wen Ruan nodded in agreement.

“I was just like you back then. I remember the first time I picked up a scalpel, my teacher asked me to dissect a rabbit. I was terrified and tried my best to refuse. I never dared to do it.”

"But my teacher stayed with me the whole time, never leaving, until I began to do as he instructed..."

"At the time, I thought that was the most terrifying thing in the world."

"But now, when I think back to the first time I picked up a scalpel, I can't even remember the fear I felt or what my mindset was at the time."

“Until two years ago, the sound of gunfire reminded me of that fear again, even more so than before. It must have been the fear of losing my life…” Grace said calmly.

“But now…” Grace shook her head, smiled, but didn’t continue.

“Go back, go back as soon as possible. This is not a place for you, and there’s also that despicable Jiang Yan and her teacher Daniel.”

"Those two wretched fellows, those two annoying things that just won't go away..." Grace began to curse, her voice rising with agitation.
