Song Yan wasn't there either, and Wen Ruan didn't know how to answer. But it was undeniable that she didn't plan to have children at the moment, but she had only just returned and hadn't discussed it with Song Yan yet.
Now, suddenly faced with Song's mother's urging to have a child, Wen Ruan was somewhat flustered and unsure how to respond.
However, when Song's mother saw that Wen Ruan hadn't spoken for a long time, she realized that she had been too anxious. After all, Wen Ruan had only just returned to the country, and with Song Yan working away from home for a long time, the issue of having a child was indeed a problem.
She really didn't want to be a bad mother-in-law, especially since her daughter-in-law was quite good. But looking at the neighbors around her, especially those her age who had already become grandparents, she couldn't help but feel a little anxious.
Seeing that Wen Ruan hadn't spoken for a while, Song's mother added, "It's not that I'm forcing you, it's just that you two are both quite busy with work, so I wanted to ask you if you have any plans to have children. You don't need to answer me now, you two can discuss it properly after you meet Xiao Yan..." Song's mother gradually calmed down.
"Maybe I'm just too anxious. Don't take it to heart. As for you two, I was just asking. I know you have your own plans..." Song's mother continued.
Upon hearing this, Wen Ruan quickly spoke up: "Mom, don't worry, I'll discuss it with Song Yan properly and then let you know my answer. You don't need to worry about us."
After the meal, Wen Ruan became restless, especially because of Song's mother's words urging her to have a baby, so she asked to say goodbye.
She wanted to take advantage of the day to pack her things and take a bus to the neighboring county to visit Song Yan.
Song Yan is unaware of her return. Based on his usual habits, he estimates he won't be back in Beijing until the end of the month. Wen Ruan is impatient and wants to go to him.
When Wen Ruan proposed this idea, Song's parents were very happy. The young couple had been separated for so long, but their relationship was still so good. However, they were a little worried because the mountain county where Song Yan lived was the poorest and most backward place in the neighboring province. The location was also a bit difficult to find, and it even required two transfers.
Song's mother and father were somewhat worried about Wen Ruan's safety, and Song's father even offered to find a driver to take Wen Ruan there.
After careful consideration, Wen Ruan nodded in agreement and told Song's father that she needed to go back to the small courtyard to pack some things before setting off in the afternoon.
Mr. Song nodded in agreement and told Wen Ruan that a driver would pick her up at 2 p.m.
After returning home, Wen Ruan packed some things. She thought that she had just returned and had not yet officially completed the various procedures, so she had a lot to do. However, she still wanted to spend some time with Song Yan, so she packed some luggage and planned to go to Shanxian to spend a few days with Song Yan.
The car traveled for a long time, and the road conditions were very bumpy. Wen Ruan felt very uncomfortable sitting in it. If it weren't for the constant reminder in her mind that she was about to see Song Yan and the encouragement she was trying to cheer up, Wen Ruan was afraid that she would not be able to hold on and would throw up.
After finally arriving in the county town, the car stopped in front of the county government. Wen Ruan told the driver that she would go find Song Yan first, put the things down, and then let the driver return to the capital.
Wen Ruan quickly completed her registration and entered the county government. Unfortunately, after asking around, when she finally found Song Yan's office, it was empty. Just as Wen Ruan was wondering who to ask, she heard a voice behind her: "Who are you looking for?"
Wen Ruan turned around and saw a young man who looked very young, probably not much younger than her.
"Hello, I'd like to look for Song Yan," Wen Ruan replied truthfully.
"Looking for Director Song?"
"Did you make an appointment beforehand?" the young man asked in a businesslike tone.
“I am Director Song’s secretary, Zhou Shengsheng. He is not in the county town right now. If you need anything, please let me know first, and I will pass it on to the director as soon as he returns.” He then added.
Wen Ruan was a little confused. Before coming here, she hadn't thought about not being able to find Song Yan, and she felt a little anxious.
"When will he be back? I am his wife, Wen Ruan," Wen Ruan introduced herself.
"Ah? Oh!" Zhou Shengsheng suddenly became a little excited.
"You've returned from abroad?!" Chow Sang Sang greeted him warmly.
Wen Ruan was startled by him: "Yes, I just got back yesterday and was thinking of coming to see Song Yan today..."
"Oh, I understand, I understand!" Zhou Shengsheng looked like he had just stumbled upon something, which made Wen Ruan a little embarrassed.
"Two years ago, Director Song led a brigade to build an agricultural and forestry economic park, which generated economic benefits for the local area. The apple and pear trees planted earlier this year have already started to bear fruit. Now it is harvest season, and Director Song went to the countryside to investigate," Zhou Shengsheng explained.
Wen Ruan was somewhat at a loss, unsure of what to do: "Do you know when he'll be back? Or is there any way to contact him?"
"It's uncertain when Director Song will return. The only way to contact him is through the brigade's phone. Then, the brigade leader will find Director Song and he will be able to get the news and then make phone calls back and forth." Wen Ruan felt a headache coming on when she heard this.
“Why don’t you come with me to the countryside? I went with Director Song the day before yesterday, but I just happened to come back today to deal with some documents. I have to go back in a little while. If you have time, you can come with me to see Director Song!” Zhou Shengsheng suggested.
Zhou Shengsheng knew that Wen Ruan had just returned to China, and it seemed that his director was unaware of this news yet. He was still working hard in the fields with the local villagers every day during the autumn harvest, showing no intention of returning at all.
