Chapter 33 Wounded

Miao Cuihua greeted the two of them and then went to the front to see Song Lianhai making preparations. Today, the contestant sent by the family was his uncle, who was assisting the captain in organizing the contestants for the competition.

The two turned around upon hearing the voice and found it was Jin Hua.

In fact, Jin Hua had seen the two from afar. Wen Ruan was beautiful and had an impeccable temperament, but Song Ling, who was next to her, was dressed in a way that was particularly surprising and made her look much more beautiful and charming.

Jin Hua felt a surge of passion within him, believing that Song Ling's image was now worthy of him. Previously, whenever her father approached her, coaxed her, and helped her with chores, he hadn't been entirely willing. After all, he was a city dweller, good-looking, and a respected figure in the educated youth settlement, with many beautiful female educated youths showing him interest.

Jin Hua smiled gently and said, "Sister-in-law, you're watching the game with Xiao Ling today too?"

"Jin, please be mindful of your manners. You can call me Comrade Wen and her Comrade Song," Wen Ruan said impatiently and rudely.

"I'm sorry, Comrade Wen, I was abrupt just now." Jin Hua remained outwardly calm, but a hint of jealousy flashed in his eyes.

"Today I'm representing our educated youth group in the fishing competition. Once I win a prize, I'll let you, Comrade Song, try the fish I won!" Jin Hua said, staring intently at Song Ling.

Song Ling now greatly admires her sister-in-law, especially after listening to Wen Ruan's analysis last night, which gave her a sense of sudden enlightenment.

When she temporarily stepped away from the relationship and examined her past interactions with Jin Hua, she realized that her sister-in-law might be right.

She was sad for a long time, but her sister-in-law was right. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Besides, her outfit today, the praise from her teammates, the reaction from her family, and Wen Ruan's flattery greatly boosted Song Ling's confidence.

"No need, thank you, Jin Zhiqing." Song Ling said quickly with a cold expression, then pulled Wen Ruan to leave.

Jin Hua sensed something was wrong with Song Ling's expression and tried to reach out to grab her, but Wen Ruan stepped forward and slapped his hand away: "What are you doing? Are you trying to be a pervert?" Wen Ruan questioned, her eyebrows furrowed.

Startled, Jin Hua quickly took a step back, waving his hands repeatedly, not daring to go forward. He could only watch helplessly as Wen Ruan and the other woman left quickly.

The two walked towards Miao Cuihua's direction.

"Xiaoling did a good job just now. Men are all about making empty promises. Like, if I win an award, I'll give you fish to eat. With his small frame, whether he can even catch any fish is another matter. But he's already made a promise." Wen Ruan looked at Jin Hua's behavior with disdain.

Song Ling was hearing this for the first time and found it very novel. Half bewildered, she asked, "Is it just empty promises?"

"Yes, it's that they don't immediately help you with things, but they easily make promises to you, saying they'll keep them in the future," Wen Ruan said mysteriously.

"Men usually only use a few phrases when they're making empty promises. Let me tell you, if a man often says these words to you, you should carefully examine him to see if he's just making empty promises." Wen Ruan said mysteriously.

"Sister-in-law, which words are they?" Song Ling asked curiously.

"Believe me, it'll be later, in a couple of days, no rush. I was planning to do it next time, but I swear, you should have said so earlier. You're overthinking it..."

"I call these words the 'Three-Character Classic of Men's Empty Promises.' You'd better judge for yourself if you encounter them," Wen Ruan said seriously.

Song Ling nodded seriously, her face solemn, as if she wanted to take Wen Ruan's words as gospel.

The competition started quickly, and the villagers were very enthusiastic, cheering for their own representatives. Wen Ruan and the others were also cheering for Uncle Song.

Among the fishing contestants, there was one oddball who stumbled and staggered through the pool, struggling to maintain his balance. His movements were clumsy, a stark contrast to the agile individuals beside him.

Suddenly, a fish slid past Jin Hua's feet. Jin Hua was startled and dodged, then quickly bent down to scoop it up. Not only did he fail to catch it, but he was also accidentally bumped by a fellow contestant and fell face-first to the ground...

The people on the shore burst into laughter, making Jin Hua, who had finally managed to stand up from the pool, feel utterly ashamed. Wen Ruan, seeing this, also chuckled along with them on the shore.

Jin Hua, his face and body covered in mud, struggled to walk towards the shore. Perhaps due to his panicked movements, he slipped and fell flat on his back. Even Song Ling couldn't help but laugh at his comical actions.

Several female educated youths on the shore watched Jin Hua anxiously, their eyes occasionally glaring fiercely at each other as if they were fighting. Once Jin Hua came ashore, the women surrounded him, showering him with concern and helping him with everything from clothes to towels, taking meticulous care of him.

The men standing nearby were filled with envy, secretly marveling at Jin Zhiqing's good fortune.

Song Ling's eyes dimmed, and she let out a long breath. At that moment, she felt as if she had finally let go.

The competition lasted for an hour and a half. Uncle Song, with his rich fishing experience, came in third place, earning his family two extra fish as a reward. The whole family was overjoyed and showered him with praise.

At noon, taking advantage of the freshness of the fish, Miao Cuihua specially caught one and made a delicious fish soup. She planned to use the afternoon to marinate the rest of the fish and make them into dried fish for the New Year and other holidays.

Wen Ruan and Song Ling had nothing to do in the afternoon, so they decided to go back to the place Song Yan had taken them to yesterday. It was a place that was rarely discovered, and the mushrooms and wild vegetables grew exceptionally well there.

The two had picked almost all the mushrooms in the area when it got dark. They decided to take advantage of the remaining light and hurry down the mountain. They quickened their pace, but when they reached the middle of the mountain, there was a small pit on the ground that had somehow formed. Wen Ruan didn't notice it and stepped into it. A sharp pain shot through her ankle, and she successfully twisted her ankle.

Wen Ruan couldn't help but cry out in pain.

Seeing this, Song Ling looked anxious and quickly helped Wen Ruan up, asking how she was, whether she could still walk, and whether she should go down the mountain first and find someone to pick her up.

Wen Ruan shook her head and refused. It was getting darker and darker, and she was a little scared to be alone on the mountain. Besides, she felt that her legs could still hold on.

So Song Ling helped Wen Ruan walk slowly down the mountain step by step. After walking for about ten minutes, Song Ling suddenly became excited and kept patting Wen Ruan's arm: "Sister-in-law! Sister-in-law! It looks like my cousin! My second cousin seems to have arrived!"

Then Song Ling quickly waved to the person who came and shouted loudly, "Brother! We're here! We're here!"
