Chapter 79 Arriving Home

Perhaps because Song Heng was in good physical condition, he woke up that afternoon. After the doctor examined him, he said that he would need to stay in the hospital for another four or five days until the wound healed a little, at which point he could be discharged and go home to recuperate.

Only then did Song's mother finally feel relieved. Looking at Song Yan after he woke up, she felt extremely distressed, and tears streamed down her face.

Seeing this, Song Heng became anxious and wished he could sit up and wipe away her tears.

When Wen Ruan saw this, she quickly held him down, afraid that he would aggravate his wound in his excitement, and then comforted Song's mother repeatedly.

That evening, Sun Wenbin came to the military hospital again, saying he was there to pick up the two and take them to the military guesthouse.

After dropping the two off in the morning, he still had to handle a series of tasks within the regiment, since Song Heng, as the regiment's commander, would be unable to return to the unit for quite some time.

Upon arriving at the hospital and seeing Song Heng awake, I was extremely excited. The two have been partners for over ten years and have developed a tacit understanding. Their deep affection for each other goes without saying.

If Song Heng hadn't been so seriously injured this time that he needed to go home to recuperate and couldn't keep it a secret any longer, given his nature, he would definitely have kept it from his family again, and Sun Wenbin would definitely have been the one helping him cover it up.

After all, the two of them had been living like this for over a decade...

It took several people a long time to persuade Song's mother to leave the hospital. She had been rushing to Haishi since hearing the news and hadn't had a proper rest.

Before leaving, Sun Wenbin asked the hospital nurses to take care of Song Heng. After learning that Wen Ruan and Song Heng had already eaten dinner, he went directly to the military district guesthouse.

Wen Ruan thought that she had just arrived today and hadn't had a chance to call home yet, even though Sun Wenbin said that he had already called home to let her know that she was safe when she returned to the military region.

Furthermore, they probably don't know that Song Heng has regained consciousness yet. Song's father and Song Yan must be waiting anxiously. They asked Song's mother if she wanted to go to the first floor of the guesthouse to make a phone call, and she nodded in agreement.

After Wen Ruan dialed the phone in the compound, she handed the receiver to Song's mother. The call was answered quickly; it was Song's father!

"Old Song, Xiao Heng has woken up, but the doctor said he needs to stay in the hospital for observation for a few more days..."

"When Xiao Heng is discharged from the hospital, we'll go home together. I'll call you in advance..." Thinking of Song Heng's injured appearance, Song's mother's nose started to sting and her eyes began to redden as she spoke.

Song's mother was a little emotional. She had always opposed Song Heng joining the army, but Song's father himself was a soldier. When the campaign started, Song Heng was unable to take the college entrance examination, so after much consideration, he sent him directly into the army.

Originally, Song Yan should have followed Song Heng's path and joined the army through recruitment after graduating from high school. However, he unexpectedly managed to secure a recommendation for university admission on his own.

For more than ten years, Song's mother had always had this thought in her mind, thinking of finding a suitable opportunity to tell Song Heng to retire, but she knew that Song Heng loved this uniform and loved life in the army, so she never said it.

But Song Heng's injury this time was a big shock to her. Although she tried her best to control herself and did not say it to Song Heng on the spot.

But now, when she talks to Song's father, she can't help but say, "Xiao Heng has been in the army for more than ten years. Although he doesn't say it, I know in my heart that he only reports good news and not bad news. He must have been injured many times before."

"This time, however, the injury was particularly severe. He was even unconscious before, and we couldn't hide it any longer, so we called home to tell him."

"I just want my child to be healthy. After Xiao Heng comes home, I plan to discuss with him about his discharge from the army and his transfer to civilian life!" Song's mother dropped a bombshell.

The phone call was heavily distorted, and Wen Ruan overheard that Song's father seemed to be trying to comfort Song's mother and let her hear Song Heng's opinion, but as she listened, Song's mother became agitated.

Wen Ruan was somewhat at a loss. In the end, Song's mother seemed to refuse to communicate and said that she had a headache. Regardless of what Song's father said on the phone, she handed the phone to Wen Ruan.

Then she turned and went straight upstairs. Yes, she didn't have a big picture perspective or much experience, but all she wanted was for her son to be safe and sound. What was wrong with that...?

Wen Ruan took the microphone and heard Song's father say earnestly, "Xiao Yun, when we decided to send Xiao Heng to the army, we should have realized that he was no longer just our son..."

"He has reached his current position not only because of his personal efforts, but also because of the country's support. How could we just let him change careers like that?"

"That depends on Xiao Heng's own opinion. Besides, back in my day..."

Wen Ruan hesitated for a moment, unsure how to react to the voice on the phone, before finally saying, "Dad, it's me, Ruan Ruan. Mom just said she has a headache and is thinking of going upstairs to rest. Don't worry, I'll take good care of her."

"Hey, Ruan Ruan, are you settling in well? You've had a tough time these past few days. Your mother... well, it's alright. Take good care of yourself." Mr. Song knew what Mrs. Song meant, and seemed to want to say something more, but hesitated and then handed the phone to Song Yan.

"Ruan Ruan, how are you all doing?"

"Yes, it's all good. My brother's comrades have arranged everything for us. He woke up this afternoon. I recuperate for a few days and then we'll go back."

Only then did Song Yan finally relax. He then inquired about Wen Ruan and Song's mother, telling them not to overwork themselves and to get some rest before hanging up the phone.

Four days later, Wen Ruan went to the compound and made a phone call. The next afternoon, the group would take the train back to Beijing. The military leaders, understanding Song Heng's situation, had granted him a month's leave for recuperation.
