Chapter 21 Tanking

After waking up from their afternoon nap, the two prepared to return to the Song family home. Wen's mother was very reluctant to part with them and packed a bag full of food and other necessities for Wen Ruan, telling Song Yan to carry it carefully and instructing the two to come back and visit often.

Song Yan repeatedly assured her, saying, "Since the two families live so close, Ruan Ruan can come back anytime. Mom and Dad can also come over when they have nothing to do. My mom is always bored, so you can all get together and chat for a while."

Wen's mother nodded in agreement, and she and Wen's father escorted the two of them to the gate of the family compound. They watched Song Yan ride his bicycle with Wen Ruan on the back until they could no longer see the two of them, and then they turned back.

When Wen Ruan turned around and saw this scene, her eyes stung with tears, and she remained silent the entire way.

As if sensing something, Song Yan comforted him, "The day after tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival. We still need to prepare gifts when we go home, and we'll have to come back then."

Wen Ruan cheered herself up and suddenly thought that although she didn't have an oven at home and couldn't make the fresh meat mooncakes that she loved most in her previous life, she might be able to try making some snow skin mooncakes. They would not only look good, but also taste very soft, glutinous and sweet.

Thinking of this, Wen Ruan couldn't wait any longer. She excitedly patted Song Yan on the back, urging him to turn and drive towards the supply and marketing cooperative. She then told him that she wanted to make some snow skin mooncakes at home. Although Song Yan had never heard of this novelty, he was naturally eager to support his wife, who had finally become happy.

Wen Ruan bought glutinous rice flour and mung beans at the supply and marketing cooperative. She also noticed that there were some pumpkins left in the vegetable section, so she picked one out as well. Song Yan followed behind his wife, paying for the food and carrying the spoils of their shopping spree. The harmonious atmosphere between the two made it clear to onlookers that they were a loving couple.

This scene, however, severely provoked Dong Yan, who was standing to the side. Ever since she met Song Yan at the department store, she had wanted to find another opportunity to get closer to him. However, she went to the steel factory several times, only to find out that Song Yan was not there and was on a business trip. She finally heard that he had returned and wanted to rush over to make a good impression on him, but then she heard that he had taken leave to get married again.

Upon hearing this news, Dong Yan gritted her teeth in hatred. For some reason, this life seemed different from the last. Although Song Yan and Wen Ruan did eventually marry in her previous life, she was certain it wasn't at this time, but definitely after the Mid-Autumn Festival. She didn't know why this had happened. Dong Yan was worried and only hoped Wen Ruan would continue her antics until they divorced, because that would be her chance. Dong Yan thought viciously.

Back home, Song's mother saw the two of them returning with bags and packages, and quickly called for Song's father to come and help. Wen Ruan said, "This package was prepared by my mother. There is some cured meat that my father's comrade-in-arms mailed to you. It's not much. He said it's for you to try. There are also some walnuts. When we have time, I'll have Song Yan crack the walnut kernels out and I'll make you some pastries."

"Oh my, my Ruan Ruan, you're the only one who knows that Mom likes sweets, and you even thought of making pastries for Mom." Song's mother smiled and her eyes narrowed.

Mr. Song muttered from the side, "He doesn't even remember who bought the peach shortbread and biscuits from the supply and marketing cooperative every time we eat them."

Song's mother seemed to hear what Song's father said, and gave him a fierce glare without saying a word.

This made Wen Ruan chuckle to herself.

Then, she said, "The rest of these things were brought back by Song Yan and me from the family compound. Since the Mid-Autumn Festival is the day after tomorrow, even though Song Yan brought back mooncakes from Shanghai, I thought we'd eat the same kind every year. So this year, I might as well make something new. I happen to know how to make snow skin mooncakes, so I went to the supply and marketing cooperative to buy some ingredients. Mom, you can try them and see if my mooncakes are delicious."

"Good, good, good, my Ruan Ruan's cooking is bound to be delicious. I heard from your mother-in-law before that your cooking skills are so good, but I never expected that you could make pastries. Oh my, that rascal Song Yan has really picked a good one!" Song's mother said with a satisfied look.

"When the time comes, just ask Song Yan to do whatever you want, but don't overwork yourself. Your dad and your older brother will also be there to help you."

Wen Ruan nodded, then said in a coquettish tone, "Mom, tell me, how lucky am I? At home, my parents spoiled me rotten, and now that I'm married, my mother-in-law and father-in-law are still so good to me. Especially my mother-in-law, she's so understanding and supportive. Other people's daughters-in-law must be so jealous of me." A string of compliments made Wen's mother beam with joy, exclaiming that her family had married a treasure.

The family's laughter lingered for a long time.

After dinner, Wen Ruan instructed Song Yan to soak the mung beans she had bought in water overnight for use the next day. Then she tidied up, washed up, and prepared for bed. In those days, entertainment was scarce, and everyone went to bed early. Before falling asleep, Wen Ruan wondered if the manuscript she had submitted before her marriage had been accepted. She also thought that after the Mid-Autumn Festival, she would soon need to start studying for the college entrance examination.

When Song Yan returned from his shower, he found that Wen Ruan had already fallen asleep. He stared at her for a long time before turning off the light and going to sleep himself.

......

The next morning, Song Yan woke up early and carefully pulled his arm away from Wen Ruan's head. As if sensing something, Wen Ruan opened her eyes groggily and saw herself in Song Yan's arms. She was already used to it and was ready to give up. She didn't know why she slept so badly. Maybe it was because she used to sleep alone.

Song Yan got up to go exercise with his father and Song Heng, and told Wen Ruan to sleep a little longer. He asked if she wanted anything for breakfast, and she suggested the fried noodles at the alley entrance. She then dozed off for a while longer.

Feeling that it was about time, Wen Ruan got up to wash up, thinking that today's task was still quite challenging; she needed to spend the whole morning making all the mooncakes. Also, she had bought a lot of ingredients, so she needed to make a lot to give to her neighbors and other people.

"Ruan Ruan, are you done washing up? Come out and eat when you're done." Song Yan's voice came from the living room.

Wen Ruan was brushing her teeth, trying not to make any noise, so she quickened her pace and walked towards the living room after she finished.

"Ouch!" Wen Ruan cried out in pain.
