Chapter 17 The ceremony is completed

Song Yan carried Wen Ruan in his arms all the way to the door, leaving her older cousin anxiously watching behind. They had agreed that he would carry Wen Ruan out of the house when she left, and he had even argued with his younger brother about it for a long time. But to his surprise, Song Yan didn't give him that chance at all.

Seeing her cousin's pathetic behavior, the aunt pulled him away and then followed behind Wen's parents to see Wen Ruan into the car.

As Wen's mother watched her beloved daughter leave for another family, she couldn't help but shed tears, even though she knew it was a joyous day.

Wen's father also put his arm around Wen's mother's shoulder and comforted her in a low voice. When Wen Ruan saw this scene, she couldn't help but tear up.

Seeing this, Song Yan felt a little anxious. He couldn't bear to see Wen Ruan sad, so he quickly assured her, "If you miss home, we can come back anytime. I will definitely try to get an apartment in the family compound next year so that I can be closer to my parents. If all else fails, we can buy a bigger house and bring them to live with us."

He quickly assured the Wen family that he would treat Wen Ruan well, and then coaxed Wen Ruan into getting into the car.

Wen Ruan's dowry was quite large. The day before the wedding, only large items such as wardrobes and bookshelves were sent over. Although the large items had been taken away yesterday, there was still a lot of dowry left. It would take five or six trips just to transport all of the six or seven bicycles.

On the way to the Song family's house, the people around couldn't help but marvel. They were shocked by the grandeur of the groom's wedding procession and surprised by the bride's family's doting on her, with such a large dowry.

Song Yan looked at Wen Ruan, who was standing there in a daze, and held his bride's hand tightly with his right. But Wen Ruan was still immersed in the sadness of leaving home. Soon, the car arrived at the Song family home.

Two strings of firecrackers crackled and popped as Song's parents waited for the newlyweds to return.

Song Yan carefully carried the bride out of the car. Wen Ruan looked around. The Song family lived in a cadre compound, a place she used to frequent. But today felt distinctly different. It was clear the Song family had specially decorated the area. The road to the Song family's house was festively decorated, and the people in the compound were very welcoming, especially the children, who followed the newlyweds, waiting to see the bride. They all praised her beauty, saying she and Song Yan were a perfect match.

Wen Ruan smiled shyly at everyone, then buried her face in Song Yan's chest amidst their cheers.

Meanwhile, Song Heng quickly arranged for people to scatter candy everywhere, which drew cheers from the surrounding crowd.

Finally, Song Yan carried Wen Ruan through the crowd and into the Song family home. Song's parents and relatives were already waiting, beaming with joy at the sight of the newlyweds.

After that came the wedding ceremony, where they bowed to heaven and earth and served tea. After the ceremony, Song Yan escorted Wen Ruan to her room and said, "Ruan Ruan, you should rest for a bit. I'll have my mom bring you some food later."

As Song Yan stepped out of the new house, he happened to run into his mother, who was on her way out to greet guests.

"Mom, Ruan Ruan hasn't eaten yet. Could you please get her some food?"

"You don't even need to tell me, I've already arranged everything. I had Song Ling ask the chef to reserve a portion especially for Ruan Ruan. They're about the same age, so I can have Song Ling keep Ruan Ruan company and chat with her so she won't be scared by herself," Song's mother said, rolling her eyes at him.

"Thank you, Mom!" Song Yan replied.

Song's mother was speechless. It was different after he got married. He even knew how to care for and be considerate of his wife. She had never heard her youngest son say "thank you" before, but she heard it today. She thought to herself, "Sons are all ungrateful. Daughters are much better."

Wen Ruan sat on the edge of the bed, looking around.

When I was a child, I often followed Song Yan and Song Heng around and even came into Song Yan's room. But as I got older, I didn't come as often to avoid suspicion.

However, in Wen Ruan's memory, Song Yan's room was almost empty, with only a desk, a bed, and a wardrobe, nothing else. But now, it has changed drastically.

Not only was it filled with Wen Ruan's dowry, but it also had many new large pieces of furniture. Luckily, Song Yan's room was big enough.

The Song family was different from other families. Firstly, Song's father was a veteran who had rendered great service on the battlefield and later retired due to injuries, making him a meritorious contributor to the country. Secondly, Song's mother's family were national capitalists who had generously supported the army in the past. After her relatives passed away one after another, leaving her alone, she voluntarily handed over her property to the state for allocation before the movement began, citing a shortage of housing for family members in her work unit. The Song family's actions were recorded, and therefore, the turmoil of those years did not affect them.

So when Song's father's workplace allocated housing, considering various reasons, they specially allocated a large house to the Song family, with three bedrooms and a living room. A small part of the living room was partitioned off to be used as a study, which was quite spacious in those days.

"Bang bang bang!" A knocking sound rang out on the door.

"Sister-in-law, I'm coming in?" A young female voice called out.

“Go in!” Wen Ruan replied.

"Sister-in-law, I am Song Ling. Do you remember me? We met a few times when we were little."

"I remember you, Lingling." This young girl was the youngest daughter of Song Yan's uncle, who was also Song Yan's cousin. Song Yan's uncle had a son and a daughter. The eldest son, like Song Heng, joined the army at a young age. He said he had a mission and couldn't come back for the wedding. He even wrote a letter in advance, which contained a gift of thirty yuan.

"Sister-in-law, hurry up and eat something. You probably didn't have time to eat much this morning. You don't know, my aunt told me to bring you food. My second cousin was worried and even came to tell me to personally serve you some of his favorite dishes. You should try them." Song Ling said jokingly.
