Soon, the New Year arrived again. Since Wen Ruan and Song Yan got married, the Song and Wen families have always celebrated the New Year together. Even during the New Year when Wen Ruan was abroad for a period of time, this year was no exception.
Wen Ruan and Song Yan were both busy with work, and only managed to free up some time a few days before the Lunar New Year.
Therefore, the preparation of household New Year supplies and food was done by Song's mother and Wen's mother.
Wen Ruan has been back for some time now, and her work has gradually gotten back on track, with her business becoming more mature.
However, during holidays, Wen Ruan's work becomes even busier, and she simply doesn't have time for many things, sometimes even busier than Song Yan.
It wasn't until the afternoon of Lunar New Year's Eve that I finally had some free time to go home and spend the holiday in peace.
This year, both the Song and Wen families gathered in the small courtyard, chatting and laughing together, cooking and talking, each with their own things to do.
Just as all the dishes were almost ready to be served, there was a sudden knock on the gate of the courtyard house.
Wen Ruan happened to be in the courtyard at the time. When she heard the knocking, she thought it was her imagination. Logically speaking, since it was New Year's Eve this year, people with good manners would not visit on such an important day.
In addition, Wen Ruan and Song Yan were usually busy with work and didn't have any particularly close friends, especially those who would come to visit them, so they couldn't help but feel a little surprised.
Just as Wen Ruan was hesitating whether the knocking was on her own door, the knocking started again.
"Ruan Ruan, is someone knocking on the door?" Song's mother asked, poking her head out from inside the house.
She went into the kitchen just now, saying she wanted to help, but it seems that Mr. Song thought she was causing trouble and kicked Mrs. Song out of the kitchen. She is now sitting in the living room watching TV.
Before the Lunar New Year this year, Wen Ruan thought it would be nice for the two families to spend the holiday together, chat, and watch TV together. After discussing it with Song Yan, they decided to bring one TV back. So, Song's mother and Wen's mother were watching TV and eating melon seeds in the living room.
Song Yan and his two sons were busy preparing dinner in the kitchen.
"It seems so, I'll go take a look..." Wen Ruan replied, put down what she was holding, and walked towards the door.
Upon reaching the gate, instead of opening it, he first asked, "Who is it?" and then waited quietly for a response.
"Ruan Ruan? It's me, Song Heng." A man's voice came from outside the door.
Upon hearing that it was Song Heng, Wen Ruan quickly opened the door: "Big brother, you're back!"
Wen Ruan was also happy for Song's mother and the others. She had heard them mention that Song Heng hadn't come back for the New Year last year, which meant it had been almost two years since he last came back. She couldn't help but sigh, thinking how tough it really is for soldiers.
"Yes, I came back for the New Year. Are my parents inside?" Song Heng asked.
“Yes, Dad and Song Yan are in the kitchen, and Mom and the others are watching TV in the living room,” Wen Ruan replied.
Then I saw that Song Heng was carrying a large backpack on his back and two large bags in his hands. I thought of reaching out to take them from him and help him carry them, since they looked very heavy.
“I don’t need you, you can’t lift it.” Song Heng shook his head and replied.
"It's been so long, and you're still as annoying as ever," Wen Ruan complained to his face.
Upon hearing this, Song Heng couldn't help but shake his head and chuckle: "You little rascal."
"Ruan Ruan, who is it? I heard you talking to someone." Song's mother was watching TV without blinking, and she wasn't curious about the noise outside. The TV show was at an exciting part, and she and Wen's mother were so engrossed in watching that they didn't care at all about what was happening outside.
Song Heng and Wen Ruan stood in the courtyard, not even seeing Song's mother's face, only hearing her voice.
Wen Ruan sighed helplessly and called out in a low voice, "Mom, bring it out! Come and see who's here!"
"Who is it?" Wen Ruan's voice rang out, and both Song's mother and Wen's mother came out of the living room.
"Auntie, Mom!" Song Heng greeted the two politely when he saw them.
As soon as Song's mother came out, she saw Song Heng wearing a thick military green overcoat.
Wen Ruan's first reaction was that Song Heng hadn't changed much after so long.
Just as I remembered, he was tall and imposing, with a face tanned from years of training. His dark complexion was striking, and his sharp eyes gave him an imposing presence.
"Xiao Heng?" Song's mother was a little excited when she saw him. Before the two could have a conversation, tears fell unconsciously.
Seeing this, Wen Ruan quickly pulled her mother into the house first, leaving the mother and son alone. After settling her mother in, she turned and went into the kitchen to inform Song's father and Song Yan that Song Heng had returned.
Then, they asked the two of them to go see him, keep him company, chat with him, and take the work from Song Yan's hands.
Anyway, there's not much left to do, just setting out the bowls and chopsticks and serving the dishes.
Song Yan was very happy to hear Wen Ruan's words. The two were brothers who grew up together and had a very good relationship. Song's father was always busy with work since childhood. Although Song's mother did not need to work and had relatively more free time, she was a pampered young lady who never lifted a finger. Sometimes she couldn't even take care of herself, let alone Song Yan and his brother.
From a young age, Song Yan always followed his older brother Song Heng around, and the two brothers had a very good relationship.
So Song Yan was very happy that Song Heng came back for the Chinese New Year. Because of the nature of his work, it was difficult for him to take time to go home in the past. In addition, it was inconvenient to contact his family, and they often couldn't reach him. His family was often worried about Song Heng.
