Chapter 42 You Smile at Him

Hua Li gave a mocking smile, "Of course I consider you a grateful person."

"Go quickly! Her husband lost his life saving you. You must repay him properly, lest she and her child be left without anyone to rely on."

"Do you have to talk to me like that?" Luo Shicheng was almost choked by Hua Li's words.

"If you don't want to hear it, then stay away from me."

Hua Li shook off Luo Shicheng's hand and walked away without looking back.

Luo Shicheng didn't even glance at Liu Jingqiu. "I have nothing to say to you. If you insist on talking, then talk to my fists."

He doesn't believe in the concept of not hitting women, especially since Liu Jingqiu dared to touch his precious daughter. It's already exceptionally merciful that he didn't beat her. If Liu Jingqiu continues to challenge his bottom line, he won't let her off even if he gets fired.

"Luo Shicheng, Jingqiu really has something to tell you. Can't you let her finish what she has to say?"

As Luo Shicheng's words became increasingly absurd, Chu Jianguo stepped forward to speak up for Liu Jingqiu.

No wonder Liu Jingqiu dared to come see him; it turns out that Chu Jianguo was supporting him behind the scenes.

Luo Shicheng gave a forced smile and put his arm around Chu Jianguo's shoulder, leading him toward the nearby woods.

Chu Jianguo thought Luo Shicheng wanted to talk to him alone, so he obediently went into the woods with Luo Shicheng. When he came out, he was bruised and swollen, and two of his back teeth had been knocked out.

Luo Shicheng then came out, shook the blood off his hands, and strode away.

"Big brother, are you alright?"

Liu Jingqiu exclaimed in surprise and stepped forward to support Chu Jianguo, who was staggering.

Chu Jianguo had no idea that Luo Shicheng would resort to violence without warning. He spat out a mouthful of blood and glared angrily with his bull-like eyes.

“That bastard Luo Shicheng dared to hit me, I’m going to sue him. Even if I don’t skin him alive, I’ll make sure he regrets it.”

Liu Jingqiu wanted to persuade him, but she shut up when she saw Chu Jianguo's swollen and distorted face.

Chu Jianguo wiped the blood from his nose, becoming even more enraged, and began to berate Liu Jingqiu.

"It's just paying money and writing an apology letter, it's not like you'll lose a piece of your flesh. Don't come begging to Luo Shicheng again, understand?"

"You can't beat Luo Shicheng, so why are you taking it out on me?" Liu Jingqiu just cried and didn't answer Chu Jianguo.

After Hua Li brought the two children home, she busied herself boiling water to bathe the two little ones, and then took a shower herself.

Hua Li had just finished showering when she heard a knock on the door. When she went to open it, she found Chen Yuanshan standing there.

Chen Yuanshan, thinking of Luo Yan, knocked on the door, stuffed the bag he was carrying into Hua Li's hands, and strode into the house.

When Chen Yuanshan saw Luo Yan, freshly bathed and wearing the floral cotton pajamas he had bought for her, drinking milk from the small enamel mug he had bought for her, he immediately beamed with joy.

"My darling Yan Yan, do you miss Daddy Chen?"

When Luo Yan saw that Chen Yuanshan had come so late, she knew that he was worried about her, so she quickly reciprocated with super emotional value.

After putting down the enamel mug, Luo Yan cheered, "Daddy Chen! Daddy Chen! Hug me, Yan Yan!"

Hearing Luo Yan affectionately call him "Daddy Chen," she flew over like a swallow returning to its nest. Chen Yuanshan opened his arms to catch her and held her, not knowing how to express his delight.

Luo Yan cupped Chen Yuanshan's handsome face and gave him a quick kiss, the prick on his stubble-covered cheek making him wince.

Chen Yuanshan was charmed by Luo Yan's adorable expression and burst into laughter. Hua Li came in carrying things and smiled when she saw the two of them so close.

As soon as Luo Shicheng returned and opened the front door, he heard cheerful laughter coming from inside the house.

Through the glass window, one could see Chen Yuanshan chatting and laughing with Hua Li, embracing Luo Yan affectionately like a father and daughter. Xiao Xiu, who was watching quietly from the side, would occasionally laugh along, a stark contrast to the somber atmosphere at home.

Luo Shicheng felt a sense of resentment at being abandoned by the whole world.

Chen Yuanshan stayed for a good half hour before leaving. Luo Shicheng, who was hiding in the shadows, waited until Chen Yuanshan was far away before pretending to have just returned and pushing open the door to enter the courtyard.

Wu Cuihua heard laughter coming from next door and recognized that the man's voice was not Luo Shicheng's, so she stayed at the door and waited.

Peeking through the crack in the door, Wu Cuihua saw a man come out of the neighboring gate and leave before Luo Shicheng returned. Immediately, she conjured up a whole scene of being cuckolded in her mind.

Luo Shicheng bolted the door and went inside. He saw Hua Li organizing the things Chen Yuanshan had given him, and his face was so sour it was unbearable to look at.

"Who sent it?" Luo Shicheng asked, knowing the answer already.

"Chen Yuanshan." Hua Li spoke coldly, a stark contrast to her usual friendly and talkative demeanor with Chen Yuanshan.

Luo Shicheng was furious. "Are you happy he came?"

Hua Li frowned and turned to look at Luo Shicheng. "What do you want to say?"

He couldn't say a word he wanted to say, because if he did, Hua Li would definitely never talk to him again. Luo Shicheng pursed his lips.

Hua Li ignored Luo Shicheng, packed her things, and poured water for Luo Yan and Xiao Xiu to rinse their mouths.

"You smile at him..."

Hua Li has never smiled at him since he moved back, which makes Luo Shicheng feel wronged.

Hua Li glanced at Luo Shicheng with a cool expression.

"Yanyan just finished her postpartum confinement period and caught a cold and fever because I didn't know how to take care of her. I wanted to ask you to take the child to see a doctor, but you were at Liu Jingqiu's house celebrating An Xiaotong's birthday..."

I stood outside her house watching you two so happy together, while I had to take the child to the hospital alone. Did I ever complain to you? And what right do you have to judge me now?

Luo Shicheng was speechless.

Hua Li continued, "What I could tolerate back then, why can't you tolerate it now, Luo Shicheng? You can't be so hypocritical."

"I'm sorry..." Luo Shicheng had nothing to say except to apologize.

Hua Li snorted coldly, escorted Xiao Xiu back to her room to lie down and fall asleep, then carried Luo Yan back to the master bedroom.

Hearing Hua Li plug in the bolt, Luo Shicheng swallowed all his bitterness and returned to his room.

After Hua Li fell asleep, Luo Yan quietly opened her eyes and entered the space in an instant.

Having finally gained access to the space, Luo Yan immediately began flipping through Liu Jingqiu's notebook.

The handwriting in the notebook was crooked and the content was messy, making it a little difficult for Luo Yan to read.

The earliest entry in the notebook is dated March 5, 1964, and contains only one line: Liu Ming, 5 mao (0.5 yuan).

Luo Yan flipped through the pages one by one. Most of them seemed to be bookkeeping, but starting in July 1966, there was more than just bookkeeping. Some names were followed by addresses, and even Luo Shicheng's name began to appear more often.

The part about Luo Shicheng is mostly about a young girl's budding romantic feelings. However, Luo Yan can tell from the lines that Luo Shicheng has no other intentions towards Liu Jingqiu, and it is entirely Liu Jingqiu's unrequited love.

Turning to 1968, Luo Yan discovered Xu Tai's name, while Luo Shicheng's name disappeared until February 1970, when it reappeared.

However, after Luo Shicheng's name reappeared, Liu Jingqiu no longer recorded her feelings with an admiring tone, but rather seemed to be investigating Luo Shicheng.

One sentence in particular caught Luo Yan's attention...

Luo Shicheng has been locked up for the past two years, and everyone says he's gone mad. But when I saw him today, he was even more handsome than before, and I still want to marry him.

Throughout the entire notebook, Liu Jingqiu's husband, An Guo, was never mentioned. Instead, Xu Tai had three entries, the last of which contained an address in the Great Northern Wilderness. The ink was fresh, indicating that it was a recent entry.
