Sun Bailing had other things to do and planned to leave after sending Luo Yan back to the hospital. However, when he knocked on the ward door, a strange woman opened it.
"Where is Luo Shicheng?" Sun Bailing asked.
Liu Jingqiu greeted Sun Bailing with a smile.
"Is this Commander Sun? I am Liu Jingqiu. Hua Li is sick, and Shi Cheng is busy, so he asked me to come and take care of Hua Li."
What kind of bizarre thought process did Luo Shicheng have that he actually let Liu Jingqiu take care of Hua Li? Luo Yan was dumbfounded.
No, she couldn't let Sun Bailing leave, otherwise both she and Hua Li would be in danger.
While Liu Jingqiu wasn't paying attention, Luo Yan slipped into the ward and saw a basin of water on a chair next to the bed, with a towel in it. She reached out to test the water temperature and found it was icy cold.
As expected, Liu Jingqiu had no good intentions.
Clang!
Seeing Luo Yan reach into the basin, An Xiaotong overturned it, startling Sun Bailing, who grabbed Liu Jingqiu, walked to the bedside, and picked up Luo Yan.
"Grandpa, I'm fine. Don't blame my sister. She didn't knock over the basin on purpose."
An Xiaotong's little leather shoes were filled with water, but she put on a kind face and pleaded with Sun Bailing on behalf of Luo Yan.
Looking at the fairly pretty little girl, Luo Yan thought to herself, "Like mother, like daughter. This five-year-old girl already speaks with the accent of a cunning old woman."
"Who are you?" Sun Bailing frowned, clearly disliking the little girl's words.
“This is my daughter, An Xiaotong…” Liu Jingqiu walked over and introduced her to Sun Bailing.
"Grandpa, she is Aunt Liu."
Luo Yan's words triggered Sun Bailing's memories.
Remembering that Luo Yan had said Luo Shicheng was spending time with Aunt Liu instead of his wife, Sun Bailing's gaze towards Liu Jingqiu became even more scrutinizing.
Liu Jingqiu didn't understand the meaning behind Luo Yan's words. She lowered her head slightly, raised her hand to tuck a stray hair behind her ear, and looked serene and content.
"What were you doing just now?" Sun Bailing asked Liu Jingqiu.
Liu Jingqiu said, "I just fetched some water to wipe Hua Li down."
It was inconvenient for a grown man like him to be here, so Sun Bailing decided to leave Luo Yan behind and depart.
Luo Yan clung tightly to Sun Bailing's neck with both of her little hands.
"Grandpa, don't go! Auntie is going to kill my mom."
One sentence made Liu Jingqiu's mind go blank.
"Luo Yan, who taught you to lie?" Liu Jingqiu scolded.
Luo Yan hugged Sun Bailing tightly and wouldn't let go, "I didn't lie, the water is so cold."
Having lived most of his life and seen all sorts of storms, Sun Bailing immediately understood upon hearing this. He reached out and picked up the thermos on the windowsill; it was empty.
Without saying a word, Sun Bailing kicked them out.
"I've already arranged for someone to come and take care of Shicheng's wife. You can leave now."
When that brat Luo Shicheng comes back, he'll settle accounts with him properly.
Liu Jingqiu originally planned to wipe Hua Li's body with ice water to make her sicker and preferably die, but unexpectedly, someone else came along and ruined her plans.
Liu Jingqiu didn't care about Sun Bailing's opinion of her, but she was afraid that the matter would reach Luo Shicheng's ears.
Liu Jingqiu bent down to pick up the basin of water and the towel from the ground, went out to the water room to fetch another basin of clean water and placed it on the chair by the bed before speaking to Sun Bailing.
"I've already washed the towel..."
As he spoke, he picked up the kettle from the floor on the other side of the bed and showed it to Sun Bailing.
"I've already prepared the hot water. Be careful not to make it too hot when you're adding it to the water."
After saying that, Liu Jingqiu took An Xiaotong's hand, bowed slightly to Sun Bailing, and left.
Sun Bailing's opinion of Liu Jingqiu did not change because of this, since if he really intended to wash Hua Li with warm water, he would not have been so guilty as to overturn the basin.
However, since he had driven the person away, he had to find someone to replace him, but where could he find a suitable person in such a short time? Sun Bailing scratched his head.
"Commander..." The guards couldn't wait for Sun Bailing to come downstairs, so they ran up to look for him.
Sun Bailing has already wasted too much time and really can't stay any longer.
“Go call Luo Shicheng and tell him to come back and take care of his wife. Tell him that this is an order and he is not allowed to delegate the task to anyone else.”
Having just returned to his unit, Luo Shicheng was called back to the hospital. Helpless, he was forced by Sun Bailing to stay in the ward and watch over Hua Li.
When Hua Li woke up, it was already evening. When she opened her eyes, she saw the man sitting on a chair by the bed, and her daughter lying next to her, fast asleep.
"What are you doing here?" Hua Li couldn't remember how many months it had been since she last saw Luo Shicheng.
"You're sick, and my neighbor, Aunt Wu, came to the army base to see me..."
Seeing Luo Shicheng's impatience, Hua Li's nose tingled with emotion.
"I'm sorry for causing you trouble. You can go now."
Luo Shicheng immediately got up and left.
Looking at the man's heartless back, Hua Li's tears welled up instantly.
Hearing the noise, Luo Yan rubbed her eyes and sat up in bed.
"Is that Grandpa?"
Sun Bailing said that Luo Shicheng was not allowed to leave until Hua Li was discharged from the hospital.
Whenever Luo Yan mentions Sun Bailing, Luo Shicheng can no longer just leave.
Luo Shicheng did not answer Luo Yan's question, but instead turned his head and spoke to Hua Li without looking back.
"I'll go buy you some food."
Luo Yan picked up the insulated lunchbox from the bedside table and placed it in Hua Li's hands.
"Auntie's cooking is so delicious."
Hua Li's hand trembled, and she almost dropped the insulated lunchbox that Luo Yan handed her.
"Liu Jingqiu came by?" Hua Li sniffed, hating herself for being so useless.
Luo Yan realized that Hua Li had misunderstood and quickly said...
"It was made by the aunt at my grandfather's house, not by Aunt Liu."
The Luo family had served in the military for three generations and were native to the capital. In order to train Luo Shicheng, he was specially sent down to Jiangcheng for training.
Hua Li knew perfectly well that Luo Shicheng's father couldn't possibly come, but she was puzzled when Luo Yan kept calling him "Grandpa".
"Which grandfather?"
“It’s Grandpa Sun,” Luo Yan said.
Since it wasn't Liu Jingqiu who made it, Hua Li, who was starving, opened the lunchbox.
The aroma of rice was irresistible. Hua Li swallowed hard, took the spoon from Luo Yan, and scooped up some porridge to feed her.
"Mom, Yan Yan has already eaten..."
Luo Yan patted her still slightly swollen belly.
"Auntie gave me porridge, it was so delicious."
Hearing that Luo Yan had eaten her fill, Hua Li finally felt relieved and began to eat heartily.
Luo Shicheng turned around and saw Hua Li eating just like Luo Yan, gulping down porridge as if she would starve to death if she lingered even a second longer.
Hua Li devoured the entire lunchbox of porridge like a madwoman, then held the empty lunchbox and wept uncontrollably.
She couldn't understand why she had ended up like this, living an upright life and never doing anything against her conscience.
The thought that I almost died at home, and that I was only occasionally conscious while unconscious, hearing my daughter crying and calling for her mother, made my heart ache like it was being torn apart.
"Luo Shicheng, let's get a divorce."
After the divorce, she took her daughter back to her hometown.
Even if her parents pass away, the villagers can help take care of her daughter, so that if she were to die one day, her daughter wouldn't be left without anyone to care for her.
The reason Luo Shicheng kept the marriage with Hua Li even though he knew she had betrayed him was to appease his elders and avoid being pressured to marry her again.
Now that Hua Li has filed for divorce, he also feels that there is no need for the two of them to torture each other anymore, and it is better to end it sooner rather than later.
"Okay, I'll go back and write the divorce papers."
