Chapter Thirty-Six: The Infant Outwits the Old Fox

The little guy said I'm pretty?

Chu Tonghai raised his hand to touch his old face, then looked at Luo Yan, whose big eyes were blinking.

Well, back in the day, I was a heartthrob. The little guy wasn't quite as good-looking as me, but he wasn't ugly either.

Wait a minute, the little guy isn't his, why is he comparing him to the little guy?

"Comrade Hua Li, you're not the owner of the jade pendant you mentioned, are you?" Chu Tonghai narrowed his eyes, keenly sensing something was amiss.

Luo Yan's mouth formed an "O" shape. The old man is amazing! She only mentioned one sentence, and he immediately thought of the key point. No wonder he can be her grandfather. He's awesome.

Hua Li got angry.

She didn't do anything, so how did Chu Tonghai find out?

Could it be...?

Hua Li looked at Chu Tonghai, then at Luo Yan, who was being held in Chu Tonghai's arms. They didn't even look alike. It was so illogical to expose them like that.

Chu Tonghai scrutinized Hua Li from head to toe, and upon closer inspection, he found her somewhat familiar.

Chu Tonghai suppressed the turmoil in his heart, coughed a few times, and let the orderly go out first.

"Comrade Hua Li, I have considered your request... I will investigate the matter of the jade pendant. As for the job, it was originally yours, so it is only right to return it to you."

Weren't they very firm before? Why did they suddenly agree?

Hua Li was bewildered. It was a good thing that the job was being given back to her, but…

"Yanyan, tell Grandpa, did you take the jade pendant?"

Luo Yan pretended not to hear, because she was not supposed to understand.

Chu Tonghai carried Luo Yan to the desk, opened the drawer, and took out a dragon-carved jade pendant from the bottom of the drawer to show Luo Yan.

"Little friend, have you ever seen this before?"

Oh, so the two jade pendants are a pair. No wonder they have such a unique shape.

Luo Yan pointed at the jade pendant with her little finger and blew bubbles, "Pretty, pretty."

Yes, the jade pendants are all very beautiful, so it's normal for a little baby to praise them. I just don't know if these jade pendants have any spatial properties. Luo Yan really wants to try dripping her blood on them.

Chu Tonghai put the jade pendant on Luo Yan's wrist, saying, "Is this a gift from Grandpa?"

What does that mean? A test?

If she happily accepts it, she'll likely be immediately accused of stealing An Xiaotong's jade pendant.

That old man is wicked!

Luo Yan wrinkled her little face, raised her hand and grabbed the jade pendant, pulling hard. When she couldn't pull it off, she started to whine and cry.

Hua Li felt sorry for the child, so she went over and picked up Luo Yan, gently coaxing and comforting her while taking off the jade pendant and placing it on the desk.

“My daughter Yanyan doesn’t like these things, thank you Chief Chu.”

Chu Tonghai realized that he couldn't understand anything Luo Yan said that was complicated, and even if Hua Li wanted to instigate Luo Yan to steal, he couldn't do it.

Furthermore, Luo Yan herself doesn't like jade. Children wouldn't take things they don't like, so the story of Luo Yan stealing An Xiaotong's jade pendant should be a misunderstanding.

Thinking of this, Chu Tonghai's dislike for Hua Li lessened considerably, and he asked Luo Yan in a low voice.

"Little girl, is your name Yan Yan?"

Luo Yan nodded.

"Your mother said that Aunt Liu Jingqiu hit you. Can you tell Grandpa how she hit you?"

Hua Li was very unhappy that Chu Tonghai had given the jade pendant to Luo Yan without her consent, and now that she heard Chu Tonghai ask her such a question, her expression turned even colder.

Oh, so Mom came to complain to Chu Tonghai. I know about this.

Luo Yan blinked her big eyes, looking completely bewildered, as if saying, "What are you saying? I don't understand."

Hua Li suppressed her anger and explained to Luo Yan, "Yan Yan, tell Grandpa whether Aunt Liu hit you or not."

Luo Yan poked her arm with her little hand, "Aunt Liu, hit, hit, hit..."

As she spoke, Luo Yan gritted her teeth and pretended to pinch herself, her whole body trembling with effort.

Seeing this, Chu Tonghai suddenly pointed at Hua Li and asked, "What about your mother? Did she ever hit Yan Yan?"

That old thief is a bit slippery.

Luo Yan pouted and patted her little bottom.

"Mom, hit, hit, hit..."

Hua Li, this child, how come she's learned to tattle?

Chu Tonghai reached out and took Luo Yan into his arms again, patting himself with his big hand as he asked Luo Yan, "What about Grandpa? Did he ever hit Yan Yan?"

Luo Yan stared blankly at Chu Tonghai, then suddenly grinned and drooled. She cupped Chu Tonghai's face in her two little hands and gave him a big kiss, covering his face with drool.

Liu Jingqiu hit me, and you actually suspect this and that, even the baby's false accusation.

If I make you doubt me, spitting all over your face is the least I can do.

After being showered with the baby's drool, Chu Tonghai took out a handkerchief to wipe Luo Yan's drool off first, and then wiped his own face. He didn't seem disgusted at all, which made Luo Yan look at him with new respect.

Hua Li was also a little embarrassed by Luo Yan's actions and quickly apologized.

"I'm sorry, the child is too young..."

Chu Tonghai put away the handkerchief and waved his hand, "You said it yourself, she's still young, it's alright, it's alright."

Luo Yan, I did it on purpose.

Luo Yan passed Chu Tonghai's tests completely, so Luo Yan did not wrong Liu Jingqiu, and Liu Jingqiu did indeed secretly beat the child.

Sigh, it seems that a rough, rural environment can't raise good children. Chu Tonghai glanced at Hua Li, then felt something was off.

Hua Li is also from the countryside, but even when she was bullied, she always presented the facts and reasoned with the people. She never did anything despicable like bullying children behind their backs.

Then look at the little one I'm holding, so skinny, but her smile is absolutely heartwarming. And then look at An Xiaotong, so greedy, playful, and competitive...

Chu Tonghai grew increasingly frustrated, determined to return Luo Yan to Hua Li and refuse to cause himself any more trouble.

Seeing that Chu Tonghai seemed to be seeing the guest off, Hua Li shamelessly asked another question.
