Hua Li talked for a long time, but it was no match for Luo Yan, who woke up and rushed into her arms calling her "Mom".
When the little boy heard Luo Yan call Hua Li "Mom," he sadly lowered his eyelashes.
"Yanyan, who is he?" Hua Li asked Luo Yan, pointing at the little boy.
Luo Yan, "Brother."
Originally, Luo Yan wanted to tell Hua Li how she found the little boy in a child's voice, and even if she used slightly more complicated words, it shouldn't be a big problem.
But to Luo Yan's horror, she thought she was deliberately speaking in a babyish tone, but when she tried to make her story more complicated, she completely lost control and started babbling incoherently. Not only Hua Li, but even she herself didn't know what she was saying.
how so?
Hua Li couldn't understand a word, so he gently rubbed Luo Yan's head and coaxed her.
"Don't rush, baby, tell me slowly."
Luo Yan reluctantly accepted this messed-up reality. After calming down, she used gestures and occasional words to recount how she found the little boy.
"Bang!"
Luo Yan looked terrified, made a gesture as if she were peeking out of the window, and then sat down heavily at the entrance of the cellar, shaking her hands and feet and sobbing.
Then, Luo Yan picked up the iodine on the ground, pointed it at her knee, pursed her lips and blew on it, frowning and grimacing.
He then put down the iodine solution, picked up the net bag, pointed at the little boy, and said, "Brother, eat this."
Luo Yan was putting on a great show, while Hua Li and the little boy were amused by Luo Yan's clever and mischievous performance and burst into laughter.
Luo Yan put down the net, wiped the sweat from her forehead, put her hands on her hips, and glared angrily at the two people, one big and one small, who were laughing hysterically while ignoring her efforts.
"Hmph!" Luo Yan stomped her foot in anger and turned to leave.
You two bastards, I'm ignoring you.
Hua Li chased after Luo Yan, picked her up, took the net bag, and led the little boy to the front yard.
After putting the net back in the living room, Hua Li found some medicated oil and applied it to Luo Yan and the little boy to repel mosquitoes. Then she took the two children to the police station.
When the police officers at the local police station heard Hua Li say that she had found a little boy in her backyard, and then saw that the little boy was dirty all over and that his clothes were not made of ordinary fabric, they realized that he did not seem to be a homeless child. So they took out the case file of missing children and checked it one by one.
Closing the case file, the police officer looked disappointed and handed Hua Li a pen and paper.
"Please leave your home address and workplace."
Hua Li took the paper and pen and wrote as she asked, "Have you found his parents?"
The police officer gave Hua Li a very definite answer: "No."
Hua Li became worried, "What will happen to this child?"
The police officer said, "They will temporarily send her to a welfare home for foster care."
Hua Li frowned as she looked at the little boy holding Luo Yan's hand.
"What if his parents are never found?"
The police said there was nothing they could do but let him continue to be cared for in the welfare home.
Hua Li sighed and went over to coax Luo Yan to let go.
Luo Yan could see the fear in the little boy's eyes and feel how tightly he was holding her hand. But Hua Li was about to divorce Luo Shicheng, and she couldn't let Hua Li suffer because of sympathy.
Hua Li told Luo Yan to let go, so she did, and Hua Li picked her up and carried her out of the police station.
The little boy, left alone, watched Hua Li carry Luo Yan away into the distance, tears streaming down his face.
Hua Li also felt sorry for him, but she knew her abilities were limited and she really didn't dare to take on the responsibility of leaving the little boy behind.
Back home, Hua Li took Luo Yan directly to the backyard.
Hua Li checked and found that the things covering the vegetable cellar were still there, but the lock had been pried open, and a piece of thin wire was lying next to it.
Hua Li deduced that the little boy saw her putting the lunchbox into the cellar, but it took him too long to pick the lock, and after unlocking it, he didn't have the strength to lift the bamboo basket containing the lunchbox. He went down the ladder to get the lunchbox but accidentally rolled down.
Hua Li picked up the bamboo basket hanging in the cellar, took out the lunchbox, opened it, and smelled it. It wasn't spoiled. After locking the cellar door, Hua Li took the lunchbox and led Luo Yan back.
After entering the house, Hua Li noticed the television set placed on the living room cabinet.
Hua Li knew without asking that the television was bought by Luo Shicheng, so she specifically told Luo Yan not to touch the television, and then took the lunchbox to the kitchen.
After heating the food in the lunchbox and letting it cool until it was no longer too hot, Hua Li called Luo Yan to eat.
Luo Yan obediently walked over and sat down at the table, her mind inexplicably filled with the pitiful image of the little boy eating the steamed rice cake with gusto.
"Why isn't Yan Yan eating?" Hua Li asked softly when she saw Luo Yan staring blankly at her rice bowl.
Luo Yan picked up her spoon and started eating. After finishing her meal, she had no interest in watching TV and instead leaned on the windowsill, staring blankly at the darkening sky outside.
Luo Shicheng didn't return until after 8 p.m., by which time Hua Li and Luo Yan had already gone to bed.
Upon hearing the knock, Hua Li put on his coat and got out of bed to ask who it was. Recognizing that it was Luo Shicheng, he removed the latch and opened the door to let Luo Shicheng in.
After opening the door, Hua Li turned around and went back to the master bedroom, even locking the door behind her.
Luo Shicheng hesitated for a moment outside the door before silently entering his usual guest room.
The next day, Hua Li got up early to prepare breakfast. Just as she left her bedroom, Luo Shicheng walked in carrying the breakfast he had bought.
Hua Li pretended not to see it and went into the kitchen to open the rice bag.
Luo Shicheng then came in and saw this, and coughed lightly.
"I bought breakfast. Also, I've asked for three days off for you at the supply and marketing cooperative. Spend some time with Yan Yan..."
Hua Li paused, tied up the rice bag, and returned to the master bedroom.
Luo Shicheng was busy putting bowls and chopsticks on the table when he saw Hua Li walk over and put twenty yuan in front of him.
"The cost of food these past few days..." Hua Li said.
Luo Shicheng nearly suffered internal injuries from anger. "Take it back."
Hua Li ignored him and went to wash up on her own.
There was a knock on the door, and Luo Shicheng went to open it, where he saw two police officers in uniform.
The older police officer explained their purpose...
The police told Luo Shicheng that Hua Li had found a little boy at home yesterday and arranged for him to stay in the police station's duty room. They planned to send him to the welfare home this morning, but he disappeared. Luo Shicheng quickly called Hua Li out.
If she had known the child would run away, she would have taken him home to care for him temporarily. Hua Li was filled with regret.
When the police asked Hua Li if the little boy had come looking for her after she returned home last night, Hua Li shook her head and told the police that if they were still worried, they could come in and check.
The police officers were very conscientious and responsible; they looked around the room as soon as they entered.
Awakened by the noise, Luo Yan got out of bed and ran to Hua Li's side, where Hua Li picked her up.
The police officers checked the backyard but couldn't find the little boy. They apologized and left.
Luo Yan, still half asleep and full of questions, asked, "Mommy, what's Uncle doing here?"
Hua Li frowned, "My brother is lost."
The little boy can't speak, what if he encounters bad people? Luo Yan felt a little regretful after hearing this.
Noticing that the mother and daughter were in a bad mood, Luo Shicheng took Luo Yan away to wash her face and brush her teeth.
After washing up, Luo Yan sat down at the dining table with a wrinkled face and no appetite, while Hua Li stared blankly at the steamed buns and fried dough sticks.
Luo Shicheng assumed that the mother and daughter were still angry with him and did not want to eat with him, so he finished his meal in a hurry and left.
"Mom..." Luo Yan didn't want Hua Li to blame herself too much, so she comforted Hua Li.
"Mom, my brother will come back."
These were just words of comfort to Hua Li, but before the words were even finished, a little boy, looking like a mud monkey, timidly peeked out from outside the door.
