Shen Chengyi paused for a second and said, “Xiaohua and Mom are related by blood.”
"She really is..." Su Yuehua widened her eyes in shock. Huang Guihua was beside her, and she swallowed back the words she was about to say.
"She's not my daughter, but she is related to me. Xiaohua should be the child of my mother's brothers and sisters." Shen Chengyi repeated the results of the paternity test on the phone.
"I understand. My mother is in my office. I'll hang up first." Su Yuehua hung up the phone and looked up at Huang Guihua.
Huang Guihua asked casually, "It's a call from Chengyi."
Su Yuehua nodded, and after considering her words, she said, "Mom, why have I never heard you mention my grandmother's family?"
"Why mention them?" Huang Guihua obviously didn't want to talk about her mother's family.
"Mom, Chengyi sent your and Xiaohua's hair abroad for a paternity test. Xiaohua is related to you by blood and should be the child of your brother or sister." Su Yuehua felt that Huang Guihua should know about this matter.
Huang Guihua's eyes blurred, tears instantly moistened her eyes, and she choked up and asked, "Are Xiaohua and I really related by blood?"
"Mom, it shouldn't be wrong." Su Yuehua stood up, took out a handkerchief from her bag and handed it to her.
Qian Xiaoyan was so shocked that her jaw dropped. "I told you, two people who look so similar can't possibly have no relationship at all."
Huang Guihua wiped her tears with a handkerchief, took a deep breath and said: "Xiaohua might be my twin sister's child. I thought she..."
She choked up again when she talked about this. "When I was seven years old, there was a famine in my hometown. My father heard from the villagers that the Northeast was vast and sparsely populated, with large tracts of land where pheasants could fly into the rice pot. So he took our whole family to follow the villagers to the Northeast. I was young at the time, and after listening to the adults' descriptions, I thought the Northeast was a paradise, with endless white steamed buns to eat. I had no idea that the Northeast was not so easy to conquer."
"On the third day after we left the village, we encountered a group of horse bandits on the road. They not only robbed our family of the small bag of food, but also injured my eldest brother. We couldn't go home. If we went back, we would starve to death. Finally, my father gritted his teeth and decided to take us to beg for food."
"There were refugees all along the way. There was no food to be had. Even the grass roots were eaten. My younger brother developed a high fever the next night, and my eldest brother's injuries were also..."
This has always been a pain that Huang Guihua didn't want to recall. Every time she thought of it, she felt heartbroken. She covered her mouth and cried for a long time before continuing, "My father sighed all night while watching over my elder brother and younger brother. The next morning, he said he would take me out to eat something delicious. I foolishly told him to bring my younger sister with me. When we entered the city, I found out that he was going to sell me. I cried and begged him not to sell me, but what I waited for was him taking the money from the troupe owner and leaving cruelly."
"I have never understood why he had to sell me, the most sensible and capable one, out of five children in the family."
If Su Yuehua hadn't asked her today, Huang Guihua would never have wanted to recall these painful experiences. "Later, I followed the troupe to the capital. I learned art during the day and worked as a handyman in the theater at night. The troupe had a hard time due to the years of war. I didn't stay in the troupe for a few years before it disbanded. I took the money given by the troupe owner and stayed in the capital. I found a job as a female worker and later met your father."
Su Yuehua hugged Huang Guihua and comforted her: "Mom, don't think about the past, you have us."
"Yes, I am content to have you three siblings with me." Huang Guihua sighed while holding Su Yuehua's hand.
Seeing that she had stopped crying, Su Yuehua asked tentatively, "Mom, do you still want to find my grandma's family?"
Huang Guihua waved her hands and said, "I won't look for her anymore. They sold me out, so I have no relationship with them anymore. I just feel sorry for Xiaohua."
Maybe they had the same experience. Every time Huang Guihua thought of Xiaohua, she felt so distressed.
Su Yuehua sat back at her desk, rubbed her temples, and said slowly, "Mom, did Xiaohua tell you where she went?"
"I asked, but the child said nothing. He just said he would write to me after he settled down." Huang Guihua couldn't help but sigh heavily, looked at her watch, and exclaimed, "Oh, the students are about to finish class. I won't talk to you anymore. I have to go to cook."
After saying that, he walked out of the office in a hurry.
Su Yuehua watched her leave and started chatting with Qian Xiaoyan, "Xiaoyan, how are your wedding preparations going? Do you need any help?"
"Everything is almost ready. My mother is going to a friend's house to deliver an invitation today. I don't want to go with her, so I came to hide here."
"Yuehua, why didn't you tell me that getting married is so troublesome? I feel like I'm on my way to buy things every day." Qian Xiaoyan complained.
Su Yuehua shrugged. "I've been married for so many years, I've forgotten it a long time ago. Besides, when I got married, the conditions were not as good as they are now."
Speaking of marriage, Su Yuehua did have some regrets. When she came here, she was already in the bridal chamber, and her relationship with Shen Chengyi was very tense. Even the bridal chamber was added later.
Seeing her in a daze, Qian Xiaoyan stood up from her chair, took her hand and said, "Yuehua, I'm so nervous, my heart is pounding."
Su Yuehua endured it and said, "If the heart stops beating, won't the person die?"
The two chatted idly for a while, and Qian Xiaoyan didn't leave until it was almost time to get off work.
.......
Soon it was Qian Xiaoyan's wedding day.
Snowflakes started falling from the sky early in the morning, but they stopped soon as the weather got warmer and the snowflakes melted when they fell to the ground.
Su Yuehua got up early in the morning to wake up the three children, "My dears, hurry up and get up. Who said you want to attend your Aunt Xiaoyan's wedding? Your Aunt Xiaoyan is waiting for you to be her flower girls."
Shen Yuchen and Shen Yuyan were already dressed, but the little girl was still lying in bed, unwilling to get up, "Mom, let me sleep for a little longer, just one more minute."
Shen Chengyi put on his clothes and came over, patting Su Yuehua on the shoulder, “Go change your clothes first, I’ll call her.”
When Su Yuehua changed her clothes, she saw Shen Chengyi combing Shen Yuning’s hair. Su Yuehua couldn’t help but praise him for his proficiency: “Husband, when did you learn this skill? It’s amazing.”
"When you were in school." Shen Chengyi said lightly.
The family of five dressed up before going downstairs, having breakfast, and then got in the jeep driven by Shen Chengyi and went directly to Qian Xiaoyan’s house.
As Gao Chunhai's good brother, Shen Chengyi had to go to Gao Chunhai's side. He sent Su Yuehua, her mother and her two children, as well as Qiao Yinghong to Qian Xiaoyan's house and drove away.
