Chapter 3 Visiting the Fair

Su Yuehua felt uneasy when he looked at her. She wanted to imitate the original owner's arrogant attitude and ask him what he was looking at.

But as soon as he looked into Shen Chengyi's eyes, he was defeated. He pretended to be calm, put on his cotton jacket, pushed open the door and walked out quickly.

At this moment, Li Yumei was heating up breakfast in the kitchen. There were a lot of leftovers from the banquet at home yesterday, so they could just heat it up and eat it this morning. She saw Su Yuehua got up and greeted her with a smile, "Sister-in-law, you're awake. Xiaohu said you gave him one yuan to change his name. He's just a kid, so just give him ten cents as a token of your appreciation."

Su Yuehua was not familiar with Shen Chengyi's sister-in-law, and was afraid of revealing the truth by saying too much, so she just smiled and watched her serve the dishes, and asked casually, "Sister-in-law, do you need help?"

"No need for you, go wash up quickly! We can eat after I pick up the buns." Li Yumei didn't dare to ask Su Yuehua, a delicate lady, for help, so she quickly refused.

The Shen family has three rooms. Bai Xiuying lives in the main house with Shen Lili. On weekdays, the family eats on the kang in the main house. The other two rooms are occupied by the two brothers.

When Su Yuehua finished washing up and walked into the main room, she saw the whole family gathered around the kang table. Bai Xiuying smiled and waved her hand, saying, "Yuehua, come sit on the kang."

"Mom." Su Yuehua smiled shyly at her and sat over.

Shen Lili, who was sitting on the kang, rolled her eyes at her and said sarcastically, “You are really a city lady. You have to wait for your whole family to have breakfast.”

Su Yuehua suddenly felt that the original owner's previous arrogant and unreasonable character also had its advantages. For example, someone like Shen Lili would be more arrogant if she didn't fight back.

She rolled her eyes and glared at him, saying sarcastically, "What's wrong with being a city girl? Are you envious, sister? As the old saying goes, reincarnation is a technical job, and those who envy can only watch."

"Su Yuehua, you are too bullying." Su Yuehua's words obviously touched Shen Lili's sore spot, and she was so angry that she threw the chopsticks directly onto the kang table.

Bai Xiuying was afraid that Shen Lili would make a scene, so she quickly picked up a steamed bun and put it in her bowl, saying unhappily, “Eating can’t stop you from talking.”

Then he put another steamed bun into Su Yuehua's bowl and advised, "Yuehua, Lili has been spoiled by me, don't take what she says to heart."

"Thank you, Mom. I won't take it to heart." Su Yuehua replied politely.

Li Yumei tried to smooth things over, saying, "Sister-in-law, tomorrow is New Year's Eve. Today is the last big fair 29 years ago. Do you want to go?"

But he regretted it after asking, thinking that a city girl like Su Yuehua would look down on the big market in their poor mountain village.

"Go, sister-in-law, I'll go." Su Yuehua has lived in the city since she was a child and has never been to a big market!

As a person who has traveled through time, she is even more curious about the big rural fairs in the 1970s.

Looking at the plate of leftovers from yesterday's banquet on the kang table, Su Yuehua lost her appetite, but she couldn't show it, so she had to pick up the coarse grain steamed bun with chopsticks and gnaw on it.

Su Yuehua had been spoiled since childhood, and her body was used to eating fine grains, so she couldn't swallow the steamed bun in her hand at all.

She swallowed a mouthful of steamed bun and stretched her neck, which looked extremely funny in the eyes of the Shen family.

After breakfast, Su Yuehua wanted to help clean up the dishes to improve the impression of the Shen family, but was pushed away by Bai Xiuying. "No need for you. Aren't you going to the market with your sister-in-law? Go quickly! Don't miss the oxcart from the village to the town."

After saying that, he did not forget to remind Li Yumei: "Yumei, don't forget to sell the eggs you have saved at home at the market."

"Thank you, Mom." Su Yuehua thanked her with a smile and turned back to her room.

In fact, she quite likes Bai Xiuying as her mother-in-law. She never tortures her daughter-in-law like most mothers-in-law in rural areas.

Soon she would go out to the market, so her mood naturally improved, and she unconsciously hummed a song, "The first month of the year is the New Year! The old are wishing the young a happy new year!"

"No, it's the younger ones wishing the older ones a happy new year." Shen Chengyi suddenly spoke up, scaring her so much that she immediately fell silent, and her hand that was searching for her wallet paused.

Shen Chengyi took out a stack of banknotes from his jacket pocket and handed it over, "Here's the money. Aren't you going to the market with your sister-in-law later?"

Su Yuehua was a little surprised, and more embarrassed, but she didn't have the courage to say no, so she could only accept it.

Just now she searched through the original owner's bag and found only a few dollars and ten kilograms of provincial grain coupons.

Logically speaking, the original owner's father was the head of a military unit, his mother was a doctor in a hospital, and he himself worked in a hospital, so he should not be short of money.

But she was really stupid. Not only did she spend money lavishly, but as long as her fake best friend asked, she would lend out all her assets.

There was another reason why the original owner agreed to marry Shen Chengyi, which was that Shen's father promised her that as long as she married Shen Chengyi, he would give her a dowry of one thousand yuan.

In the 1970s, how much did it cost to buy a house? A dowry of one thousand yuan was definitely a huge sum of money.

She got the thousand yuan, and before she could even hold it warm, her best friend came to her to borrow money, crying miserably, saying that her brother had beaten someone up, and the other party demanded a thousand yuan in compensation. If there was no compensation, her brother would pay with his life.

In other words, the original owner was trustworthy and lent out the thousand yuan he had just received without thinking.

Su Yuehua counted the money given by Shen Chengyi with curved eyebrows, "Three ten-yuan notes, two two-yuan notes, one one-yuan note, and a few food coupons."

When she looked up, she found Shen Chengyi looking at her thoughtfully, and hurriedly lowered her head.

"Yuehua, are you done packing?" Li Yumei came to her with a basket.

"Sister-in-law, I'm done packing." Su Yuehua said, quickly put the canvas bag on her back, and followed Li Yumei out of the house.

It snowed last night. When I opened the door, I saw the ground covered with silver, giving this shabby little mountain village a dreamy look.

The feet made a "crunching sound" on the snow, leaving behind a series of footprints.

Su Yuehua found that she liked this place a little. She followed Li Yumei out of the Shen family courtyard. When she turned around, she saw Shen Chengyi and Shen Xiaohu following them out.

Shen Xiaohu rolled his eyes and called out with a smile, “Second Aunt, take me with you.”

Before Su Yuehua could speak, Li Yumei directly refused: "What are you going to do, little kid? Isn't it free to ride in a bullock cart?"

Being rejected in front of Su Yuehua, Shen Xiaohu felt very embarrassed, and his originally smiling face collapsed in an instant, and he turned around and ran back to the house.

Su Yuehua followed Li Yumei for a while and heard footsteps behind her.

She stopped and turned around to look, and found that Shen Chengyi had been following behind her. She hesitated for a second before asking, "Are you going with us?"
