Chapter 2 Acquaintances
Su Tao recuperated at the town clinic for two days. After the doctor confirmed she was well, she prepared to pack and return to the village. Su Tao didn't actually have much to pack; her suitcase had been flooded when it fell into the river. While she was unconscious, she had been sent back to the village early along with the other educated youth who had regained consciousness.
Su Tao's clothes were wet and dirty from the fall, and while she was unconscious, the nurses at the hospital had already helped her change into a loose-fitting hospital gown. Her clothes had been washed and dried over the past two days, so all she needed to do was change back into her old clothes. Su Tao quickly changed into her own clothes and walked out to a floor-to-ceiling glass window at the corner of the hospital entrance.
Her eyebrows were as black as a picture, her skin was as white as cream, and her delicate face was covered with a pair of phoenix eyes that were naturally charming. Su Taotao was indeed as described in the original book: she was not just beautiful, but the kind of beauty that could make people astonished.
The book describes how it was this good looks that initially attracted Shen Ziqian to Su Taotao. Unfortunately, as they continued to interact, Shen Ziqian found Su Taotao's lack of knowledge and arrogance too much for him. After breaking up, he met He Xinyi, the female supporting character's best friend. She was completely different from the original, gentle and virtuous, like a delicate yet eloquent flower. Her tenderness shone through with a toughness that endeared her, arousing a man's protective desire. Shen Ziqian felt that He Xinyi was the kind of person he wanted to be with.
Su Tao slowly withdrew her thoughts. She was still very satisfied with her appearance. Looking at herself in the mirror, she saw herself tall and slender. She wore a light-colored ripped shirt and black cuffed polyester pants. It was a truly fashionable outfit in this era, and it would not be outdated even in modern times, like a retro Hong Kong style.
After getting ready, Su Tao decided to go to the town entrance to wait for his pick-up. He sat on a stone bench, bored, watching the people coming and going. Everything seemed strange and new to him.
I saw an ox cart swaying and stopping in front of me, and three people jumped out from the back seat of the cart one after another.
"Hello, comrade. I'm Hu Xiao. Are you Su Taotao, Su Zhiqing?"
Su Tao looked up at the woman who was speaking. She had short hair that reached her shoulders, and a bright and generous smile that made the ordinary face of this official look a little more pretty.
"Hello, I'm Su Taotao," Su Tao smiled slightly and extended his hand to politely shake hands with Hu Xiao.
Hu Xiao was dazzled by the smiling face and couldn't come back to his senses for a long time.
"Long time no see, Taotao," came the voice of the woman behind Hu Xiao. Su Tao recognized her as the girl who had come with Shen Ziqian that day. She had a standard oval face, long hair, curved eyebrows, and a red dress, looking gentle and generous. Shen Ziqian followed closely behind her.
No need to guess; this must be He Xinyi, the heroine from the original book. Su Tao glanced at her indifferently, not responding, unwilling to pay any attention to her. For now, she simply wanted to distance herself from the world of love and sex. She'd wait until the Gaokao resumed next year, pass it, and return to the city. As for returning to her former world, she wasn't sure if she'd have the chance, so she'd consider it later. Thinking of this, Su Tao's beautiful face took on a touch of melancholy, appearing even more radiant and charming in the afterglow of the setting sun.
A flash of jealousy flashed across He Xinyi's eyes, then quickly disappeared so that it was difficult to detect, and her eyes returned to calm.
"Taotao, are you still blaming me? Blame me if you want to, and don't ever blame Ziqian. Think of everything as my fault..." As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears and he looked aggrieved.
"Xinyi, it's not your fault. I was the one who fell in love with you first. You are so kind that you take everything on yourself." Shen Ziqian hugged He Xinyi with heartache, turned to Su Tao and said angrily: "Su Taotao, you are arrogant and overbearing. We are not suitable. I have already broken up with you. Why did you chase me to the countryside and keep pestering me?"
He Xinyi thought that Su Taotao would be furious when he saw them, but she didn't expect Su Tao to be calm, with his hands crossed, looking at them with mockery, and sneered: "Don't you usually look in the mirror?" Su Tao's nonsensical question made He Xinyi and Shen Ziqian stunned, with confusion on their faces, not understanding what he meant.
