Chapter 28 Fever
Hu Xiaojing rushed back to the town hospital and replaced the guard for a day. Shen Ziqian went back to rest. The tractor was idle during this period, so the village chief specially approved it for them to use for pick-up and drop-off.
He Chuan had no means of transportation and could only rely on his own legs to run all the way to the town health center, stopping and starting. It was already evening and the sky was getting dark.
The hospital was a major medical facility, so it was the first to install electric lights. The bulbs in the lobby and corridors hadn't been replaced in ages, and the light had long since turned yellow and was somewhat dim. The clinic wasn't large, so He Chuan asked a nurse and quickly found Su Tao's ward.
When He Chuan opened the door, he was met with this scene: Su Tao's face was red and swollen, covered in red bumps, his eyes tightly closed. From a distance, he looked like he was sleeping, but he was not sleeping soundly, his brows were furrowed, and his eyelashes were slightly fluttering. Hu Xiao sat by the bed, constantly wiping Su Tao's hands and feet and replacing the towel on his forehead.
Hu Xiao saw He Chuan coming, and a hint of surprise flashed in his eyes, but he soon let it go because of the complicated and subtle relationship between them.
"How is she?" The man's voice was low and cautious, as if he was afraid of waking the woman in her dream.
"It's always been like this. The high fever keeps coming back and won't go down. There's no news yet about a specific medicine for allergies. The doctor said that if the fever doesn't go down, my life may be in danger." Hu Xiao's voice choked up as he spoke.
He Chuan's heart sank. He had been hoping for the worst, believing it was just jealousy and exaggeration. He hadn't expected it to be this serious. Watching Su Tao lying soundlessly in bed, the thought that he might be gone forever filled his heart with a pang of pain.
He Chuan quickly took the enamel cup next to him, poured some hot and cold water into it to warm it, and then poured the powder into the cup and stirred it thoroughly. Then he sat down on the bed and gently lifted Su Tao up, letting him sit up, his strong arms firmly holding Su Tao in place.
"I'll support her, and you feed her the medicine in the cup." He Chuan said to Hu Xiao in a deep voice.
Hu Xiao held the cup and put it into Su Tao's mouth. Su Tao was unconscious and his mouth was tightly closed, so the medicine could not be fed in. He Chuan saw this and pinched Su Tao's cheek with one hand to open his mouth, "Keep feeding."
Water still flowed out from the corners of his mouth, but Su Tao was unconscious and unable to swallow on his own.
He Chuan pursed his lips, his brow furrowing. This medicine was precious, and with only this much left, he couldn't afford to waste it by repeated experiments. He instantly made a decision and snatched the cup from Hu Xiao's hand. Amidst Hu Xiao's exclamations, he took the medicine into his own mouth and kissed her bright red lips. The soft touch reminded He Chuan of the last time they'd felt it, and his eyes darkened. He quickly passed the medicine to Su Tao, and only reluctantly did he let go of her red lips after he felt her swallow it.
I don’t know if the medicine is still useful. The remaining powder is enough for two doses. In the past, when my younger sister had a high fever, it usually worked after one dose.
He Chuan asked Hu Xiao to find a seat next to him and rest while he stayed by Su Tao's side. It was around 11pm when Hu Xiao was finally replaced. If he hadn't been worried about his sister spending the night alone, he would have wanted to stay by Su Tao's side until she woke up.
Before leaving, He Chuan fed Su Tao the medicine again using the same method. The medicine tasted bitter in his mouth, but He Chuan found it damn sweet, so sweet that he didn't want to let go. He Chuan's chest heaved violently, forcing himself to leave Su Tao, repeatedly telling Hu Xiao to take good care of Su Tao before he reluctantly left.
Early the next morning, a slight movement on the bed woke up Hu Xiao, who was sleeping on the edge of the bed.
