Everyone in the team was concentrating on getting on with their journey. Every time they stepped on the ground, there was a pit that sank up to their calves. They had to pull themselves out and take the next step.
It was more difficult for the ox cart to move forward than for people to walk. At that time, there were few carts and people, and there was not even a track on the road. They could only move forward slowly, leaving footprints one step at a time.
