Chapter 68 Are You Serious?

It was still early when Jiang Mingxin arrived at Brother Fang's bookstore. She took a bowl of cold sweet potato noodles and ate while chatting with Xing Haodong on the phone.

"Did you find any new clues today?"

"Zhou Jing was discharged from the hospital and met up with the married woman surnamed Tong."

"Great, who is her husband?"

"He's not a husband, he's a lover. She's just a kept mistress."

"So Zhou Jing is her lover?"

"Yes, but he doesn't seem to know it."

"Haha, that's interesting. What are you going to do next?" Jiang Mingxin asked.

Xing Haodong said, "I'm still thinking, since there's progress in the case, shouldn't you give me a reward?"

Jiang Mingxin couldn't help but curl his lips: "Zhou Jing hasn't been brought to justice yet, and you want a reward?"

Xing Haodong's resonant voice held a hint of smile. "If there were a reward, I would definitely work even harder, forgetting food and sleep, day and night, and would not stop until he was brought to justice."

"Why are you bothering a country girl like me? I'm not very smart, and I can't think of anything to give you."

“…Jiang Mingxin.”

"Um?"

"Give me a chance."

The sweet potato starch on Jiang Mingxin's chopsticks suddenly broke in two. She subconsciously shifted her gaze, which happened to land on a book on the bookshelf called "Xue Pinggui and Wang Baochuan." She immediately muttered to herself, "I don't feel like picking wild vegetables."

Xing Haodong frowned. "What wild vegetables are you digging? Most wild vegetables are astringent and inedible without seasoning. When we went on field training, we often went to remote, uninhabited mountains and forests, and we only ate wild vegetables when we had no other choice. If you're tired of spinach, why not try cabbage?"

Jiang Mingxin couldn't help but chuckle: "I want to eat Gongcai, but unfortunately, it's not sold here."

"Gongcai? Xiangcai, right? Why did you suddenly want to eat that? You're from Henan Province, so your taste is a bit like that of Sichuan and Chongqing. But I also like Gongcai. Eating a mouthful of cold Gongcai in the summer is really refreshing."

Xing Haodong paused and said softly, "Think about what I just said."

Jiang Mingxin was helpless. She thought she had gotten over it, but she didn't expect this person hadn't forgotten it at all. "Xing Haodong, you can't be serious, right?"

Xing Haodong's voice was heavy. "I am a person who takes everything I do seriously."

After saying that, he hung up without giving her a chance to ask again.

Jiang Mingxin finished eating the sweet potato noodles and handed the empty bowl to Brother Fang, "Alas."

Brother Fang laughed a few times, "Oh, you're still sighing. Your soldier is out on a mission, so he doesn't have time to go on a date with you?"

Jiang Mingxin was at a loss for words. "What do you mean by 'my soldier brother'? Don't talk nonsense. First, he's not mine. Second, he's already retired."

"But I see you cherish him so much. If you cherish him, why do you have to sigh?" Brother Fang put the dishes in a plastic bag, planning to take them back to wash in the evening. "In the past, the world was not peaceful. There were wars in the east and west. Few people could live a good life. As long as we were together for one day, we were husband and wife for one day. There was no future at all."

He sighed to Jiang Mingxin: "It's so good now. Marriage is free. You can marry as you like. What's there to worry about?"

Jiang Mingxin couldn't explain it to him, "You don't understand—when it comes to relationships, once you're involved, you can't help yourself."

And it was absolutely impossible for her to put a plow and reins around her neck.

Just as Brother Fang was about to explain things to her in detail, Sister Hong came in with a silk scarf wrapped around her head and a net bag of bayberries in her hand.

After washing them, Jiang Mingxin put them in a glass bowl, pinched one and put it in his mouth. It tasted sour and sweet.

After Brother Fang left, Sister Hong lowered her voice and said, "I can promise you that I won't fight Zhou Jing to the death, but do you have a way to make Zhou Jing's life worse than death?"

Jiang Mingxin asked back: "Why, you don't believe me?"

"It's not that I don't trust you, but you're too young and haven't seen many bad guys. Zhou Jing's methods are far more numerous and vicious than you can imagine. He can't be dealt with with a few tricks. What's more, this is a grudge between him and me, and I shouldn't drag you into it."

Sister Hong patted the back of her hand and said, "I appreciate your kindness, but this matter should be done by me."

Jiang Mingxin knew that she was determined to take revenge, so he didn't say anything to stop her. "Then how are you going to kill him? Don't worry, I won't tell anyone."

Sister Hong knew her experience and naturally believed that she would not betray herself.

"I've thought it over carefully. I can't match Zhou Jing in terms of strength, so attacking him directly clearly doesn't stand a good chance of winning. He caused my mother to perish in a sea of fire, so I'll return the favor and burn him to death! Doesn't Zhou Jing have a beloved car? If I find an opportunity, I can lock him in it, then pour gasoline on it and light it on fire. He'll burn to death in no time!"

Seeing hatred in her eyes, Jiang Mingxin nodded in understanding.

"This idea sounds good, but it's difficult to actually implement. Have you considered these points? First, how do you lock him in the car without anyone noticing? Second, how do you get the gasoline to the scene without being discovered? Third, what do you do after the fire starts? What if someone comes to put out the fire? What will you do?"

Sister Hong was stunned by these three soul-searching questions.

She didn't expect that there were so many details involved in murder and arson.

Jiang Mingxin pressed on, "Also, if you killed someone, could Han Ge really escape unscathed? You're husband and wife. What if you were arrested and the Zhou family accused Han Ge of being your accomplice? How would you clear him of suspicion?"

"Then, I'll divorce him first, and then... No, if I do that, he'll definitely get suspicious."
