Chapter 24: Eating

A few minutes later, Li Weiguo came back from school with a book in his arms. Seeing the dish he cooked, he picked up his chopsticks and took a bite. "Not bad, you've inherited your father's true teachings."

"I'm your son. If I'm not you, who else can I be like?"

"It's time for dinner. Wash your hands and eat." Guihua said, and asked Tian Xiaolan to bring the bowls. She rinsed them with water before bringing them to the table to avoid eating kitchen dust.

Li Weimin poured a large spoonful of water from a rectangular stone water tank into the basin, then took the water out and placed it on an upright green triangular iron tripod in the corner of the door. Although the paint was peeling a little and the iron inside was somewhat rotten, the long-term exposure to humid air made their surfaces full of rust. With a light touch, the reddish-brown oxides fell off, emitting a unique smell.

"Xiu'er, come in and have dinner." Li Weimin ran to her and called her. Xiu'er was reading the book attentively, browsing the words from top to bottom, without even raising her head, as if she didn't hear him.

The moon was dim in the sky, the cold wind was howling in the open air, and some mosquitoes were singing a symphony in my ears outside. Xiu'er couldn't stand it anymore and picked up the stool and came back.

Seeing that no one was sitting down, she didn't sit down either. She and Liu Dongmei stood aside. Liu Dongmei and she stood at the door like two door gods. Guihua quickly pulled them to sit down. There was no reason to let the guests stand all the time.

When everyone was gathered and sitting around the table for dinner, Li Weiguo was the first to break the silence and asked the question that had been left unanswered since returning: "Xiu'er, aren't you going home for dinner?"

Xiu'er lowered her head, not daring to look him in the eye, and stammered, "I..."

"Did your father beat you again? Tell the teacher and I will help you educate him!" Although she hadn't said some of the words yet, he had already guessed most of it.

I still remember that day when her father came to the school and asked her to drop out. No matter how his subject teachers tried to persuade her, it was of no avail. He asked her to go to work to support the hungry family. She was obviously still a child. She was his most promising student at the time and the one in their village who had the greatest hope of being admitted to the town's high school. How come only a few months had passed and she seemed to have become thinner? What happened?

"No, he didn't hit us." Xiu'er shook her head. She knew that Teacher Li meant well, but her father was the kind of person who would hit people at any time. The teacher was no match for him.

"Okay, if he bullies you, come to me and I will deal with him!" Looking at the pale and thin appearance of the mother and daughter, Li Weiguo made a vow.

Li Weiguo looked at her and asked, "Okay, are you still studying now?"

Xiu'er replied seriously: "Yes, I never gave up."

"Wei Min's rice is really delicious, fragrant and tasty!" Hearing Liu Dongmei's praise, Li Weimin's face was almost smiling.

"If it tastes good, eat more, Auntie. Xiu'er, why don't you eat? Is it because my cooking is not to your liking?" Li Weimin looked at her with concern, wanting to know the reason.

Xiu'er didn't want to pay attention to him and only paid attention to the dish in front of her. She opened her chopsticks, picked up a large piece, and put it in her mouth. It tasted very bland, but not bad either. It could be said to be edible.

He took a spoonful of porridge and swallowed it with the vegetables.

Under the table, Liu Dongmei kicked Wang Xiuer's foot next to her very hard.

Xiu'er was knocked unconscious and almost dropped the chopsticks in her hand. She looked at Liu Dongmei and found that she was looking between Li Weimin and her.
