Chapter 55: Ingratitude

Sun Youfang knew very well that Zhu Yunxiu was short of money. She had long expected that she would come to her house because she had her eyes on the dowry in Qinghe's hand.

Qinghe was heartbroken by the previous incident over the meal, and now, Sun Youfang would never allow herself to hurt Qinghe a second time for the same reason.

That money belongs to Qinghe, and she has no right to make decisions on Qinghe's behalf.

Not to mention, as newlyweds, if Qinghe puts herself in a passive position in her husband's family because of subsidizing her family, how will she live in the future?

Although Xu Jianguo is his grandson, Qinghe is equally precious in Zhu Yunxiu's eyes.

She couldn't let her beloved granddaughter feel disappointed.

Upon hearing this, Sun Youfang's face instantly turned ashen. His eyes shot straight at Zhu Yunxiu like sharp arrows, filled with resentment and hatred. "You don't have any, but that girl Xu Qinghe has plenty of money! Jianguo is your grandson and her brother, how can you really sit back and do nothing? You old fool, how can you be so hard-hearted!"

If it weren't for the pressure from the police outside the door, Sun Youfang would have already used violence against the elderly woman.

Zhu Yunxiu saw through her false mask at a glance and became increasingly certain that there must be something hidden behind Xu Jianguo's affairs: "Qinghe is already married. The money is jointly owned by her and her husband and has nothing to do with Jianguo. As his stepmother, you should stop thinking about taking advantage of Qinghe."

"You should go to the village and borrow money to solve your urgent problem."

Sun Youfang sneered at this, her words tinged with sarcasm and irony: "If our family is so stingy, how can outsiders be generous? Are you worthy of being Jianguo's grandmother? Pah!"

"You old fool, what's the point of living besides consuming food? It would be better for you to die early and save some food for the family!"

Seeing that there was no hope of borrowing money, Sun Youfang's hatred for Zhu Yunxiu grew deeper and deeper. She was about to sneak into Qinghe's room to steal in order to solve the immediate problem and save Jianguo from the dire situation.

Zhu Yunxiu was quick-witted and quick-handed, and stepped forward to block it with his crutches.

Just at this moment, Xu Qinghe came back from outside and saw two policemen standing in front of the door. He was about to go forward to greet them, but suddenly he caught a glimpse of Sun Youfang's sneaky figure trying to pry open his door. A surge of anger rose in his heart, and he rushed over with clenched fists.

Seeing this, the two policemen immediately followed vigilantly. The purpose of their visit was to help resolve the conflict, not to let the situation worsen.

Sun Youfang never expected that Xu Qinghe would come back at this time and bring the police with him. In panic, he quickly withdrew his hand that was fiddling with the lock, forced a smile on his face, and turned to Xu Qinghe.

"Qinghe, you're finally back. Look, your brother has some troubles, and you're not here, so I thought..." Her eyes flickered halfway through her words.

That afternoon, sunlight slanted into the house. Xu Qinghe's words cut through the brief silence, and the tension in the air suddenly intensified.

"Why, when I wasn't at home, you took the opportunity to sneak into my house quietly and try to steal the hard-earned money I had worked so hard to save?" There was a sharpness in her words, and her eyes were as sharp as an eagle, shooting straight at Sun Youfang.

The two police officers in the house became accidental witnesses to this family dispute. Sun Youfang waved her hands frantically, as if trying to dispel the false accusations. "Oh, my dear sister, how could I possibly do such a despicable thing? I just wanted to borrow it temporarily to solve your brother's predicament. I promise to return it to you as soon as I find a solution!"

There was a hint of urgency in her voice as she tried to maintain a reasonable explanation in front of the police.

However, Sun Youfang was secretly brewing a plan in his heart, and a barely perceptible gleam flashed in his eyes.

She thought to herself that with the police present, Xu Qinghe would definitely not refuse without caring about her dignity, and once the matter was over, the police would naturally not interfere in their financial disputes. It would not be so important whether she paid back the money or not, and everything would fade away with time.

Xu Qinghe caught this subtle psychological change, a cold smile curled up at the corner of his mouth, and turned to the two policemen to ask: "Comrades, what kind of predicament did Xu Jianguo fall into in the city?"

Her tone was calm, yet concealed a mixture of inquiry and determination.

Seeing this, the police had already made some judgment about Xu Qinghe's identity, so they briefly recounted Xu Jianguo's case, including his illegal behavior and the consequences it caused.

"Hmph, a burglary that resulted in injuries, and now he's lying in the hospital with his life hanging in the balance. Does this sound familiar?" Xu Qinghe's tone was filled with sarcasm as he glanced around sharply.

The police were confused by this sudden connection and looked puzzled, not understanding what Xu Qinghe meant.

Xu Qinghe raised a finger, pointing directly at Sun Youfang. "Don't forget, when I wasn't home, this Ms. Sun Youfang tried to sneak into my house more than once, attempting to steal my belongings. This kind of thing is a common occurrence for them. Even on the night before my wedding, Xu Jianguo and his mother worked together to pry open my door and ransacked the house. If it weren't for my insistence, I'm afraid those valuables would still be hard to come by."

At this point, Xu Qinghe's face was as cold as ice, without a trace of warmth. Every word he said was like an icicle, cold and resolute.

"If Xu Jianguo really broke the law, he should bear the corresponding punishment and let him reflect deeply behind bars for a few years. Perhaps this will make him truly understand the price of making mistakes. I will never pay for his mistakes, nor will I help him clean up the mess." Her words were firm and could not be refuted.

Upon hearing this, Sun Youfang was enraged and out of control. He rushed forward to argue with Xu Qinghe, looking as if he was ready to fight.

"You ungrateful thing! We are blood relatives. How can you be so cruel? What good will it do you to harm him?"

Her words were mixed with anger and irrationality, and her language was vulgar and completely disregarded the occasion.

Fortunately, the police acted quickly and prevented the conflict from happening in time.

"Comrade Sun Youfang, if you continue to act so impulsively, we will have no choice but to take you back to the police station and let you calm down!"

The police's attitude is serious and leaves no room for leniency.

Another officer intervened, offering a final warning: "Please be reasonable, Comrade Sun Youfang. If you don't cooperate and follow the law, Xu Jianguo will face at least five years in prison for his actions."

Sun Youfang trembled on the edge of this harsh law, glared at Xu Qinghe angrily, then turned to the police and begged for more time to raise the funds, his expression full of helplessness and urgency.

The police seemed quite impatient and just coldly gave half an hour's grace period.

Faced with this sudden deadline, Sun Youfang could only leave in a hurry and run on the small road in the village.
