Chapter 228 The Other Side of Huo Huaizhi

"You're finally awake?" Liu Yingying turned to look at him.

The aroma of roasted rabbit wafted through the air, and Dongqing subconsciously swallowed.

"Thank you so much, Your Excellency, for saving me!"

After saying that, he took out a bamboo tube from his clothes and shot a blinding beam of light into the night sky.

He didn't know how long he had been unconscious, and he had to notify Gray Falcon and the others immediately.

Liu Yingying's eyes lit up when she saw the object in his hand. Was this... a signal flare of this era?

"Don't worry, Your Highness. I've tracked down the spies in the southern border region. The young master is unaware of this yet. I need to inform the military camp first."

As Dongqing explained, he put the signal tube away.

"Can I borrow that thing of yours...?" Liu Yingying couldn't help but make this somewhat presumptuous request.

But she was really interested in the gunpowder inside that thing!

"Huh?" Dong Qing looked at her with a puzzled expression, paused for two seconds, and finally took out the gunpowder tube again and handed it to Liu Yingying.

After taking it, Liu Yingying first tore off most of the roasted rabbit and gave it to Dong Qing, before she began to examine the tube herself…

"Thank you. By the way, how did you end up in this desolate wilderness?" Dongqing asked, voicing his question.

“I rented a hill nearby to grow cotton, and that’s when I happened to see you…” Liu Yingying continued fiddling with the tube in her hand without looking up.

As far as she knew, gunpowder was not yet widely used in the military at that time, but it was already being used to make fireworks in some places.

If she could improve the gunpowder technology of this era and turn it into weapons, that would be another huge business opportunity!

"By the way, who were those people who were chasing you?" Liu Yingying stopped what she was doing and suddenly looked at Dong Qing and asked.

“They were assassins from Yunzhao Kingdom. They had been lurking in the military camp. After I discovered them, they tried to silence me before I could report this to the young master.”

After taking a few bites of rabbit meat, Dongqing mumbled something.

He could tell that the young master had a special feeling for Liu Yingying, so he could appropriately reveal this to her.

Mentioning Yunzhao Kingdom, Liu Yingying immediately thought of Xue Ye again.

He has been gone from Wufeng Huayue for some days now. I wonder if he has made it to the Yiyue tribe safely?

Will the Yiyue tribe members bully him?

"Your Highness, what are you thinking about?"

Dong Qing's voice came through, and Liu Yingying was suddenly pulled back to reality. "No, it's nothing."

No sooner had he finished speaking than a commotion was heard coming from the distant hillside.

The two immediately exchanged glances, becoming wary.

At this moment, no one could determine whether the newcomer was friend or foe...

"Dongqing... Lady Ning'an?"

The gray falcon was the first to leap out of the jungle, and its expression showed surprise when it saw Liu Yingying.

They saw the signal flare Dongqing had fired and followed the trail, but they never expected that Dongqing would be with Liu Yingying.

Immediately afterwards, Huo Huaizhi also emerged from a dark grove of trees.

After learning about the situation, Huo Huaizhi thanked Liu Yingying, saying, "My lady, it seems that I owe you another favor."

Upon hearing this, Liu Yingying felt her head buzzing, as if she and Huo Huaizhi were always owing each other favors.

This endless cycle of favors and obligations... when will it ever end?

"Young Master, I didn't expect to see you again so soon!" Liu Yingying stood up, casually wiped the oil stains off her hands on her clothes, and greeted him with a somewhat forced smile.

Mr. Huo Huaizhi instructed someone to take Dongqing away to treat his injuries, but he himself seemed to have no intention of leaving. Instead, he walked to the fire and sat down, his eyes fixed intently on the half rabbit in Liu Yingying's hand.

"Madam Liu, this roasted rabbit is quite good. Won't you share it with Huaizhi?"

Liu Yingying's lips twitched, and she tore off another half from the remaining half of the rabbit and handed it to him.

"Young Master, is it that the army camp is running out of food supplies?"

That must be it, otherwise why would they come to steal her rabbit meat?

"Cough cough!" Huo Huaizhi coughed violently for a while, but his expression quickly returned to calm. He slowly ate the rabbit meat and said;

"The army has indeed encountered many problems recently. I have uncovered many spies from Yunzhao Kingdom, but it will take time to completely rectify military discipline."

He spoke with a serious expression, but Liu Yingying simply listened attentively without offering any comments.

After he had finished speaking, Liu Yingying reminded him, "It's getting late. Young Master, aren't you going back yet? Are you planning to spend the night in these deep mountains?"

Huo Huaizhi looked at her, his eyes seemingly darker than the long night, and felt inexplicably sad.

Does she really dislike being with me?

"The Zhennan Army's camp is behind these two mountains. Wild animals often roam these deep mountains. Madam Liu, why don't you come back to the camp with me first? I will personally send someone to take you back tomorrow."

"Okay!" Liu Yingying agreed without hesitation.

Anyway, she didn't want to spend the night alone in these deep mountains.

Huo Huaizhi was somewhat surprised, not expecting her to agree so readily, but that was fine too.

While walking along the mountain path, you would occasionally step on one or two corpses, and you would know without looking that they were all spies from the Yunzhao Kingdom.

It's easy to imagine how many people they sent!

"The Great Xia's national strength has been declining over the past few decades, but surely it shouldn't allow a mere Yun Zhao to be so arrogant and presumptuous?"

Behind her, Liu Yingying's puzzled voice came.

Huo Huaizhi paused slightly out of Liu Yingying's sight, his expression somber.
