Chapter 100 Chen Yongnian is ill
Everyone waited for Chen Yongnian's answer, but he remained silent for a long time.
Chen Yongliang was a little anxious. He couldn't let his family know that he had been beaten, or they would worry again!
Wan Qiqi then smiled and said, "I just tripped and fell, but I'm fine!"
She walked into the yard, looked around, and said, "Now that we have a mule, let's find some time to build a straw shed! In case it rains, the mule can take shelter."
Everyone's attention shifted from Chen Yongliang to the thatched hut, and Chen Yongliang temporarily escaped a disaster.
Just as he breathed a sigh of relief, he looked up and met Wan Qiqi's gaze, which startled him so much that he took a step back.
The elder sister-in-law's eyes seemed to see through everything; nothing could escape her notice.
But Chen Yongliang was still trying to comfort himself, thinking that his sister-in-law hadn't noticed anything wrong.
That evening, Chen Yongliang was rather quiet and hardly spoke.
The others just assumed he was hurt from the fall and that's why he didn't want to talk.
Because of Wan Qiqi's hand injury, the task of making honey grapefruit jam at night was divided among the three brothers, while she took care of the two little ones and provided guidance.
An'an lay on Wan Qiqi's lap, gently touching the bandaged area, and asked with her big eyes, "Mother, what happened to your hand? Is it like brother's?"
Wan Qiqi gently stroked her cheek and coaxed, "Mother, this will be fine in a few days!"
Then, she pulled Pingping over as well and said gently, "After a while, Pingping's hand will be better, and then she can play with her little sister!"
Pingping grinned and said, "Great! I'm going to take my little sister to play with Brother Zhu."
Wan Qiqi was taken aback, and it took her a while to realize that the "Pillar Brother" at Pingpingkou was Li Zhu. She laughed and said, "Sure, but your Pillar Brother is an apprentice at the medicine shop, so he might not have time to play with you~"
Pingping pouted and replied softly, "Okay!"
Wan Qiqi smiled and comforted you, "It's okay. When spring comes next year, I'll send you to the academy in town. You'll make more friends there, and lots of people will play with you."
"Academy?" Pingping didn't understand what an academy was, but she was happy to know that there were many people playing with her.
An'an tilted her little head and asked, "Mommy, what about me? Can I go too?"
Wan Qiqi was stumped!
Not to mention that An'an is underage for the academy to enroll, even if she were, she probably wouldn't be able to get in.
She remembered that in ancient times, private schools only admitted male students; only royalty and nobility would allow women to study.
She gently pinched An'an's nose and whispered, "If An'an wants to study, Mother will find a way for you."
At worst, I'll just pay Wan Ziyan to teach An'an!
She thought, An'an is Wan Ziyan's niece after all, so surely she can't refuse this request, right?
And she paid me!
The three people making honey grapefruit jam nearby would occasionally turn around and look back, whispering among themselves.
Chen Yongxing couldn't help but exclaim, "My sister-in-law is so gentle!"
Chen Yongnian's lips curled up slightly, unable to hide his happiness, "Your sister-in-law has always been very gentle."
The scene of Wan Qiqi and Aunt Zhao bickering flashed through Chen Yongliang's mind. When he turned around and met those cunning, fox-like eyes, he couldn't associate his sister-in-law with the word "gentle".
He recalled his sister-in-law talking to someone on the street and whispered, "I think my sister-in-law is very smart."
Chen Yongnian's smile widened, a hint of smugness in his eyes. "She's always been very smart!"
The two brothers exclaimed "Eh!" in unison, startling Wan Qiqi who was standing nearby. Chen Yongxing immediately said it was nothing.
Then, Chen Yongliang chuckled softly, "Brother, this is the first time I've ever seen you praise your sister-in-law like this."
"Yes, this is my first time seeing this too," Chen Yongxing chimed in. "Brother, if you're a little sweet-talker and flatter your sister-in-law, who knows, she might even give you another one!"
After he finished speaking, he and Chen Yongliang chuckled so hard their shoulders were shaking.
Chen Yongnian blushed with embarrassment after a while, and finally said, "No need, Pingping and An'an are enough!" He didn't want to see his wife suffer so much anymore.
He still remembered that when his wife gave birth to An'an, she was in pain for a whole night.
He didn't want Wan Qiqi to go through that kind of pain again.
He has a son and a daughter, and he is very content.
As the lights went out, all was quiet except for the sound of even breathing.
As dawn breaks, it's another bright and sunny day.
Wan Qiqi got up early and found Chen Yongnian with a furrowed brow, sleeping restlessly.
She then discovered that Chen Yongnian had a high fever.
I had originally planned to go to town today to ask Chen Yongliang what happened yesterday, but I had to give up on that plan.
She used Chen Yongnian's illness as an excuse to keep Chen Yongliang at home to work instead of letting him set up his stall.
Chen Yongxing and Chen Yongliang transported the remaining timber to Yang Mu's house, and Wang Shi also went to work in the fields. Only Wan Qiqi gave Chen Yongnian antipyretics and then went to invite Doctor Sun.
Although she owns a business, she cannot determine the cause of Chen Yongnian's illness; such matters require a traditional Chinese medicine doctor.
As she passed by the square, she overheard some things about the Lin family.
"I never expected the magistrate to side with the Qian family and force them to divorce Lin Youtian!"
"Yes, I heard that the Qian family packed their things and left this morning!"
What about the two children?
"What else can we do? We're all from the Lin family, so naturally we'll follow Lin Youtian."
"Didn't he say he was going to sell his daughter? Now that Qian Shi is gone, isn't he going to sell his daughter too?"
"A few months ago, Zhao Ergou sold his daughter. If he could sell her to a good family, at least life would be better than living with Lin Youtian."
Sun Yin took a few steps, then realized Wan Qiqi hadn't followed, so he turned back and said, "Let's go!"
Wan Qiqi's eyes were slightly lowered, her expression unreadable, but one could sense her low spirits.
