Chapter 157 Leading the Villagers Up the Mountain

Chapter 157 Leading the Villagers Up the Mountain

With Wan Qiqi's arrival, the discussions grew even more intense.

Finally, someone in the crowd stood up, looking dissatisfied, and asked, "Lord Village Head, the Chen family has no worries about food or clothing, yet they come to steal our yams. Aren't you going to do anything about it, Lord Village Head?"

Chen Lizheng glanced at the person who came out and saw that it was Aunt Yang.

Because of the break with Guanshi Village, Aunt Yang reacted strongly. She even went to his house to make a scene early this morning. Now she's starting to interfere with Wan Qiqi. It's really not peaceful!

But his face was calm, almost expressionless, as he asked, "So what do you think?"

Aunt Yang assumed Chen Lizheng's expression was directed at Wan Qiqi, and immediately became excited, "If you ask me, we can't take her!"

She addressed the crowd, saying, "Look how rich the Chen family is! They haven't brought any benefits to the village. They're so powerful that they're starting to disregard Village Chief Chen!"

"Oh? How did you figure that out?" Chen Lizheng asked coldly, as if he were angry.

“Everyone saw it. If she really cared about the village, how could she have kept her own family in such good shape and not care about the village’s fate?” Aunt Yang became more and more excited as she spoke. Thinking of the matter in Guanshi Village, she couldn’t help but complain, “It’s all because of Wan Qiqi that Guanshi Village cut off contact with us and put you, the village head, in a difficult position.”

Wan Qiqi walked over and overheard everything. She said coldly, "So, you think it's right for Guanshi Village to beat people up!"

"That was because the Chen family provoked them first..." Aunt Yang stopped mid-sentence, met Wan Qiqi's eyes, felt fear, and couldn't finish her sentence.

She didn't know why Wan Qiqi had such a strong aura; it seemed that Chen Lizheng paled in comparison to her.

"Hmm? Continue." Wan Qiqi glanced around, found a large rock to sit on, and looked like she was watching the other person's performance.

Aunt Yang was furious at Wan Qiqi's attitude. Knowing she couldn't argue with her, she turned to Chen, the village head, for help. "Village head, look at her! She even sat down. Does she even respect you as the village head?"

Chen Lizheng looked in the direction she pointed, his eyes calmly meeting Wan Qiqi's, and nodded, "Do you think Chen Wanshi shouldn't go?"

Aunt Yang gritted her teeth and said, "Yes, we absolutely cannot take her there!"

“Alright!” Chen Lizheng agreed.

Everyone was surprised. Was Chen Lizheng really not taking Wan Qiqi with him? He agreed so readily.

Aunt Yang smiled smugly.

But the laughter didn't last long, as Chen Lizheng's next words stunned him.

"Then everyone should disperse!" Chen Lizheng said with a sigh, turning around to go back.

“No… Village Head…” Aunt Yang and the other villagers immediately chased after him.

"Lord Village Head, weren't we supposed to be digging for yams? Why aren't we going?"

"Yes, why didn't you go?"

Amidst a barrage of questions, Chen Lizheng stopped, his expression grave, and said, "Since you all felt we shouldn't have taken Chen Wanshi with us when she found the yam, and there's no yam to be found on the mountain anyway, why bother going up there?"

After he finished speaking, all around fell silent.

A moment later, an uproar erupted.

They thought Chen Lizheng had discovered the yam, so they led everyone to dig it up to solve their food problem. No one ever thought that Wan Qiqi would be the one who discovered it!

Although Wan Qiqi has changed a lot in the past few months, the villagers still can't shake off her past image. They think she is selfish and only thinks about herself, without considering the interests of the village.

Especially after the news broke yesterday that Wan Qiqi had severed ties with Guanshi Village because of Wan Qiqi, many people felt that Wan Qiqi had only changed her appearance and that she was still the same person at heart.

"How...how could this be..." Aunt Yang was incredulous. How could Wan Qiqi have shared the news and sent the villagers to dig for yams?

Wan Qiqi sat to the side, glanced at the sun overhead, and said casually, "Are you still going? If not, I'm going home for lunch!"

Her words were met with another uproar.

The villagers only eat two meals a day: one at nine in the morning and one at six in the evening. There is no such thing as lunch. Some poor people can only eat one meal a day.

From what Wan Qiqi said, it's about three meals a day, something many people can only envy!

Some people at the scene were envious, while others were jealous, but none of them dared to utter a sound, fearing that if they angered her, she would really stop digging for yams.

Although some people recognize yam, they only recognize the edible parts. They can't find the edible parts by looking at the exposed leaves. They can only rely on someone who knows yam to take them there.

Chen Lizheng glanced at Aunt Yang and said coldly, "Since you are unwilling to go with Chen Wanshi, you don't need to go. The others will come up the mountain with you."

Wan Qiqi then stood up and waved to Lin Dazhuang beside her, "You lead the way." She was too tired to walk any further, but she still had to go up the mountain.

Previously, when everyone was talking about Wan Qiqi, Lin Dazhuang really wanted to step forward and speak up for Wan Qiqi, to tell everyone that Sister-in-law Chen was not the kind of person they were talking about.

But before he could speak, Wan Qiqi stopped him.

He didn't understand why she wasn't allowed to defend herself at first, but now he roughly understands.

Those who believe will not take what others say to heart. Those who do not believe will not listen to explanations.

Seeing everyone else following along, Wan Qiqi slowly followed behind.

She was dressed neatly and cleanly, with a relaxed demeanor, making her stand out in the crowd.

Many women who were planning to go up the mountain to dig for wild vegetables heard about this news and followed the group.

The long line of people walked in twos and threes, talking about what had just happened and sharing their opinions about Wan Qiqi.
