Chapter 16 Eight-legged Insect
Chen Yongliang was startled by the "eight-legged worm" and took two steps back, thinking: Why did my sister-in-law bring the worm back?
When Pingping and An'an heard the news that their mother had returned, they ran out of the main room. They didn't see their mother, but only saw their third uncle squatting on the ground, looking at something.
They walked over to Chen Yongliang, squatted down, and stared at the creature crawling on the ground.
An'an was bold and stretched out her little finger to touch it, but was immediately stopped by Chen Yongliang.
She stared blankly at Chen Yongliang, "Third Uncle, what is this?"
Chen Yongliang tried to scare her by saying, "This is an eight-legged insect; it bites!"
He was bitten when he was a child, and his hand bled!
"Can I eat it?" An'an asked, looking up.
Chen Yongliang choked up for a moment.
He was usually quite eloquent in the village, but this time he was rendered speechless by a child's question, which made him feel very embarrassed.
He cleared his throat and pointed to the hairy crabs crawling on the ground, saying, "You can't eat these, they're dirty! You'll get sick if you eat them."
An'an frowned and pouted, seemingly dissatisfied with the answer.
Just then, a villager's voice came from the courtyard gate: "Brother Yongliang, your elder brother wants you to come up the mountain. He's waiting for you there."
"Okay, thanks." Chen Yongliang patted Pingping's shoulder. "Pingping, keep an eye on your little sister, don't let her touch the octopus!"
"Okay," Pingping replied obediently, shielding An'an behind her.
Chen Yongliang glanced back at the tightly closed door, frowned, and left the courtyard.
Wan Qiqi locked herself in her room for a long time before she could calm herself down.
She didn't know if she could return to the modern world if she died in this world, so she wanted to live life to the fullest and didn't want to waste it.
Recalling Chen Yongnian's skillful snake-catching movements, I couldn't help but sigh. Indeed, people who live in mountain villages have developed the ability to adapt, unlike her, who felt awkward everywhere.
She was dissatisfied with everything she did, from food and clothing to shelter and transportation.
Fortunately, she remained calm enough that no one noticed anything amiss; otherwise, she might have been mistaken for a madwoman!
"Oh dear, where did this eight-legged worm come from!" A cry of surprise came from the yard, followed by a clanging sound.
Wan Qiqi thought to herself, "Could it be that they're going to throw away my hairy crabs?" and immediately opened the door and went out.
Chen Yongxing was holding two sticks in his hands, struggling to hold a large crab between them. When he saw Wan Qiqi, the crab slipped from the sticks and couldn't get up with its shell facing the ground.
"Sister-in-law, didn't you go up the mountain?" Li Chongniang covered her nose, her expression revealing dissatisfaction.
Wan Qiqi felt a pang of heartache looking at the crooked and disheveled hairy crabs.
"I'm back now!" She walked over in a few steps, turned the crab over, picked up the shells, and threw them into the basket one by one.
"Sister-in-law, why are you keeping the eight-legged worm?" Chen Yongxing asked with a puzzled look.
"Eat!" Wan Qiqi tilted her head and smiled.
Chen Yongxing and Li Chongniang immediately felt a chill.
Is this insect edible?
Still skeptical, Chen Yongxing asked again, "Sister-in-law, are you sure this stuff is edible? I remember someone in the village tried it and said it's not safe. Even though my wife and I lost our grain, we don't need to risk our lives eating insects, do we?"
Wan Qiqi felt helpless listening to him use the word "insect" repeatedly.
How can something so delicious be called a worm?
"I'll make it for you to try today, and then you'll know if it's delicious or not!"
She decided that today she would show her family how delicious crabs are!
Chen Yongxing and Li Chongniang watched Wan Qiqi's busy figure with disbelief.
Is this really the eldest sister-in-law?
"Second Brother, quickly bring Second Sister-in-law, Pingping, and An'an into the house!" Chen Yongliang stood in the yard carrying a bundle of firewood, pushing and shoving the woman and children into the house.
Just as Chen Yongxing was about to ask why, he saw Chen Yongnian walk in holding a snake in his hand.
"Second brother, quick, find something to put it in!"
The three brothers worked for quite a while before finally managing to trap the snake and make sure it couldn't escape.
Chen Yongxing couldn't help but ask, "Brother, why did you catch a snake?"
While washing his hands, Chen Yongnian said, "Your sister-in-law encountered a snake. I caught it and will sell it in town tomorrow to exchange for some grain."
After saying that, he looked around but didn't see Wan Qiqi. "Where's your sister-in-law?"
