Chapter 165 Catching the Thief
As Chen Yongliang shouted, the sound of a clay pot breaking came from inside the house.
A dark figure swept past everyone's eyes and escaped by scaling the wall.
Chen Yongliang followed closely behind, scaling the wall in pursuit.
Chen Yongxing hurriedly opened Wan Qiqi's room and looked her over.
Apart from the cabinet door being open and the quilt showing signs of having been turned over, the rest of the room was as usual, except for a jar in the corner that had fallen over and broken open.
It seems that the thieves came prepared and had already done their research.
When Wang entered the room, she touched under the quilt and found it empty. Her expression suddenly changed.
Wan Qiqi calmly glanced at it a few times, then said to Lin Dazhuang, "Go and invite the village head over!" She wanted to see which blind fool had dared to steal from her place!
During this time, she has done her best for the village. She has offered suggestions to solve any difficulties and has even solved the problem of food and clothing. Yet, some people still covet the money she has earned!
Chen Yongxing's face turned extremely ugly, and he asked blankly, "Sister-in-law, where did you put so much money?"
"Only a few hundred coins." Wan Qiqi had long suspected that someone would be eyeing the money she earned, so she deposited the silver she earned into the system.
The system not only has a cash withdrawal function, but also a storage function, so she always kept no more than one or two taels of silver in cash.
Upon hearing this, Chen Yongxing finally breathed a sigh of relief. But thinking about how several hundred coins were still money, money they had earned through hard work every day, enough to buy several bolts of cloth!
The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, muttering to himself, "If I find out who did this, I will never let them get away with it!"
No one noticed that Wang's face looked particularly pale. She sat on the edge of the bed, her hands trembling, her heart filled with guilt.
It's all her fault! If she had been more careful, no one would have known where the money was kept, and it wouldn't have been stolen!
A few hundred coins could buy almost a bushel of grain!
While everyone else went to catch the thief, Lin Zhaodi went to check on Chongniang first. After confirming that she was alright, she came over and saw Wang sitting on the bed with a guilty look on her face. She went up to comfort her and said, "Aunt Wang, it's alright. Yongliang has already gone to chase after the thief. We will definitely get the money back!"
Fifteen minutes later, the sound of hurried footsteps came from outside.
Chen Lizheng was the first to be attacked, followed by Chen Yongliang pressing down on Zhao Shitou, and Chen Sanyuan pressing down on Wu Gousheng.
Both men being pinned down had fresh injuries on their faces, suggesting they had just been in a fight.
In addition, some onlookers followed, holding torches that illuminated the Chen family courtyard.
Chen Lizheng stepped forward and returned the money bag in his hand, saying, "Count it and see if anything is missing."
Wan Qiqi took the money bag without even looking at it, and handed it to Chen Yongxing, who was standing next to her, while curiously examining the two people who had been arrested.
Zhao Shitou and Wu Gousheng were pushed into the courtyard at the same time, but their reactions were completely different.
The former immediately knelt before Chen Lizheng, pointed at the latter and said, "Chen Lizheng, you must stand up for me! I saw Wu Gousheng run out of the Chen family to arrest him. Not only was he beaten, but he also falsely accused me of stealing the silver!"
Wu Gousheng crossed his arms, spat towards the corner of the wall, and sneered, "Zhao Shitou, you really know how to turn the tables. You stole the money yourself and then framed me!"
"I stole money? Are you kidding me?" Zhao Shitou reacted fiercely, kowtowing to Chen Lizheng and saying, "Lord Lizheng, you must do me justice! Everyone in the village has seen what Wu Gousheng is like, you can't believe what he says!"
The two men each gave their own version of events, each claiming that the other stole the money.
Wan Qiqi tilted her head and looked at Chen Yongliang, wanting him to give an explanation.
Chen Yongliang lowered his head with some guilt; he hadn't seen who the thief was!
When he caught up, Zhao Shitou and Wu Gousheng were already fighting, and the money bag was also nearby, it was unclear from whose arms it had fallen out.
Wu Gousheng was indeed more suspicious than Zhao Shitou, because he was the one who picked up the money bag in the end, and was only caught by the village head and his men afterward.
But this does not prove that Wu Gousheng was the one who stole the money.
Wan Qiqi glanced at the two suspects, already having a good idea of what was going on. But if she didn't give the thief a warning today, someone else would come to steal from her house again.
Losing money is a minor issue; if a pregnant woman or child is injured, that would be a much bigger problem!
"You all say it's the other party, so tell me what you were doing when the incident happened?"
Zhao Shitou immediately looked up and said confidently, "I ate too many yams today and felt really bloated, so I came out for a walk. I saw Wu Gousheng running from the Chen family's side, carrying Chen's sister-in-law's money bag."
As he spoke, he gestured, "I immediately kicked him, trying to snatch the money bag back, but he got up and started hitting me, and then Yongliang arrived..."
"You're talking nonsense!" Wu Gousheng originally thought Zhao Shitou was just being hypocritical, but he didn't expect him to lie like a storyteller. He spat at him, "You were the one who lingered outside the Chen family's house for more than an hour, watching the Chen family members go to the main room, and then sneaked into the Chen family's house to steal. And you're blaming me for it."
Zhao Shitou immediately retorted, "You say I did it? How do you know so much? It's obvious you did it yourself and framed me!"
"Damn it, Zhao Shitou, how dare you frame me!" Wu Gousheng kicked Zhao Shitou, but his fist was pulled back by Chen Sanyuan as soon as he raised it.
Wu Gousheng was used to fighting in the village, and instead of being subdued, he twisted Chen Sanyuan's arm, shoved him, and cursed, "He's clearly a thief, why do you keep hitting me?"
When Chen Lizheng saw his son being twisted, his face darkened, and he said sternly, "Just because you laid a hand on me, I can arrest you and lock you up!"
"You can lock me up if you want, but I didn't steal the money, so don't even think about pinning this on me."
