Chapter 217 Visitors from the Village
Inside the house.
Three children sat by the stove, playing with thin hemp rope used for sewing.
They heard the noise and turned around at the same time.
The moment Mr. Sun saw the child, he caught a glimpse of the wolf cub squatting nearby. He paused for a moment, his brows furrowing slightly. “When did you get a black dog at home? What breed is it? It seems different from the ones I’ve seen before.”
Afraid of frightening Sun Yin, Wan Qiqi smiled and said, "I came with a child."
"This child wants you to examine him to see if there's anything wrong with his throat and why he can't speak."
Wan Qiqi squatted down next to the little monkey and introduced, "This is the village doctor. He treats people's illnesses and won't hurt you. Why don't you let him examine you?"
The little monkey nodded.
Although he was somewhat afraid of strangers, he trusted Wan Qiqi.
"You might need to come outside with me; the view is better there, making the examination easier."
The little monkey looked in the direction of the door, hesitated for a moment, and then followed.
When the wolf cub saw that the people had left, it wanted to follow, but Wan Qiqi grabbed it.
"You stay inside quietly and don't make a sound, or you'll go hungry at noon. Disobedience will result in hunger, understand?"
After threatening the wolf cub, Wan Qiqi put it down, got up and walked out, turning back every three steps to make sure the wolf cub wasn't following her before she felt relieved and left.
An'an watched the figure disappear before turning her face to ask, "Brother, if we don't behave, will Mother not let us eat?"
Pingping didn't know either, because his mother had done this before, but he felt it wasn't a good idea to say it like that, as it might make his younger sister dislike their mother.
His eyes darted around, and he said seriously, "Of course not, we are Mother's own children, how could she let us go hungry?"
An'an thought her brother made sense, nodded, squatted down and rubbed the wolf cub's head: "You're so pitiful, you have nothing to eat. I'll try to find a way to get some food from Feifei so you won't go hungry!"
Feifei is the name An'an gave to the peregrine falcon.
The peregrine falcon did not approve of the name, feeling it was a loss of face.
But if the master asks for it, or requests it, one should reluctantly agree.
In comparison, the wolf cubs are actually in a worse situation. They are given names but don't even know it, and they get beaten up wherever they go.
Is it just because I am a wolf?
In the courtyard.
Dr. Sun first took the little monkey's pulse and performed various examinations, but still couldn't find any damage to the little monkey.
He then had the little monkey try to make a sound.
The baby monkey isn't unable to make sounds; it just makes babbling noises, like a newborn baby.
Sun Yin had a slight headache.
"Qiqi, has he never been able to speak?"
Wan Qiqi shook her head. "I've only known him for a few days, so I don't know if he could speak before. But when his closest person collapsed in front of him, he could only cry and couldn't speak."
Sun Yin rubbed his temples and said, "He can understand what we're saying, there's nothing wrong with his body, and he can make sounds, which proves that he can speak."
He looked at the little monkey, his worry deepening. "But he didn't speak. It's possible that he lost his ability to speak because he suffered some kind of trauma in the past."
Wan Qiqi probably influenced Sun Yin's intentions.
The little monkey can talk, but he may have lost his language function due to some psychological trauma from something that happened in the past.
This is actually more difficult to treat than other outcomes.
Without knowing his background or what happened to him in the past, it is impossible to stimulate him and help him regain his ability to speak.
The little monkey tilted its head and looked at the two of them, as if it understood what they were saying, yet also didn't.
Haven't I always been unable to speak?
He has lived in the mountain stronghold since he can remember.
Although the bandits were rude and many of them liked to tease him, the chief had always treated him very well.
He couldn't remember when or how he arrived at the mountain stronghold!
Here, people are discussing the baby monkey's condition; elsewhere in the village, villagers returning from town are having various discussions.
"I thought Chen Wanshi really went to Yuzhou to do some big business, but it turns out she was captured by bandits!"
"Yes! I heard that she went out with bandits and came back wearing their clothes!"
"This is outrageous!"
"That's for sure! I wonder how many they've slept with. I heard those bandits are as thirsty as wolves; they've probably slept with them all!"
"Yongnian is now a great hero in the fight against bandits. How could you bring back such a harlot? Just divorce her!"
"In my opinion, divorcing her would be too lenient! She's a member of the Chen family, yet she's fooling around with other men. She should be drowned!"
"The other day, didn't Old Chen's daughter run off with someone? I heard she was pregnant and couldn't hide it anymore, so she ran away."
"That's a widow, and her husband is still alive!"
The woman did not notice during her conversation that there was an extra stranger in the mule cart that had returned that day.
The person was wrapped in a patched cloak, completely covering their body; judging from their figure, they were likely a woman.
As if she had heard the discussion, she stopped.
As the discussion grew increasingly heated, her small, fair hands clenched into fists, as if she were somewhat angry.
Suddenly, the woman stepped forward and grabbed the collar of the woman who had been talking the most. "I knew she had such a bad reputation! It turns out it was people like you spreading rumors!"
Everyone was chatting happily when they were suddenly interrupted by someone who looked like he was about to hit them.
The women immediately helped the villagers by tearing the person wearing the cloak off.
Who are you?
Someone yanked off the woman's cloak, revealing a young face.
Anyone with a discerning eye on the scene would have easily noticed that the skirt peeking out from under the cloak was not something an ordinary person could afford.
