Chapter 231 Lotus Breeze Town Martial Arts School
The Hefeng Town Martial Arts School is located in the south of Hefeng Town, near the dock.
The martial arts school wasn't actually a formal martial arts school; it was the Xue family's old residence.
The Xue family was considered a small family in Hefeng Town. They had been martial arts practitioners for generations, so the old house was originally built as a martial arts school.
But these generations have all declined!
When he came to Xue Jiang's lineage, he went there to learn martial arts and revitalize the Xue family, attracting many people to come and join him.
Daxing not only offered civil service examinations but also military examinations.
However, the emphasis on literature over martial arts in Daxing is somewhat excessive, so most people would rather study literature than practice martial arts.
The path to becoming a military officer was not easy. It started with a preliminary test, followed by the provincial and prefectural tests, and finally the palace examination, which tested not only martial prowess but also military strategy.
Many martial arts practitioners often pass the competition but never pass the preliminary test.
The road ends here.
What discourages many martial arts practitioners from participating in the martial arts examination is the country's emphasis on civil service over martial arts. Even if they pass the examination, the chances of being given important positions are slim, so it's better to participate in the civil service examination.
Therefore, most martial arts practitioners live in the martial arts world, becoming chivalrous heroes who travel far and wide, unwilling to be bound by the imperial court.
Xue Jiang was the same!
He once wanted to pursue a career in the military examinations, but his experiences led him to abandon that path and give up on entering the imperial court.
He did not seek credit for the bandit suppression in Lianshan, nor did he need any reward from the government. He simply considered it as helping those in need, something a chivalrous person should do.
The only thing he wanted to fight for was about the little monkey.
Xia Shanhu never mentioned that there were still children in Lianshan.
He had also tried to find out about the child through various channels over the past few days, but there was no information whatsoever. The only thing that might be related to him was...
I've heard that back when Xia Shanhu established his own mountain stronghold, he kidnapped a woman and brought her back to Lianshan, after which she disappeared without a trace.
The baby monkey's approximate age is similar to the time the woman was abducted.
The little monkey might be that woman's child.
Whether the little monkey is the son of the tiger coming down the mountain remains unknown.
The shouts from the dock reached the martial arts school, mingling with the sounds of martial arts practice inside, creating a wonderful rhythm.
Xue Qing tilted her head and excitedly told Chen Yongnian about what had happened at the martial arts school recently. "Brother Yongnian, let me tell you, while you were away these past few days, Li Wei has been talking to everyone about your performance at Lianshan. All the new disciples are looking forward to your return!"
Chen Yongnian gave a nonchalant "hmm" and stepped into the martial arts hall.
Several rows of martial arts disciples standing in the courtyard looked over upon hearing the sound.
One of the clean-cut boys, around sixteen or seventeen years old, immediately rushed over, grinning from ear to ear!
"Brother Yongnian, you're finally back!"
This person was none other than Li Wei, whom Xue Qing had mentioned.
Xue Qing blocked Chen Yongnian's path as if protecting his personal property, preventing Li Wei from touching Chen Yongnian.
She frowned, sniffed, and said with displeasure, "Stay away, you're covered in sweat, don't bother Yongnian!"
Li Wei wasn't angry at her words. He smiled and wiped his sweat. "Junior Sister Qing'er, Brother Yongnian trained with us before, he won't mind."
As he spoke, he walked around Xue Qing and looked Chen Yongnian up and down, his gaze lingering on the hands that were tied to his hands. "Brother Yongnian, how are your hands?"
"It's fine." Chen Yongnian rubbed the gauze with his fingertips, a smile curving his lips, his eyes softening considerably.
Li Wei noticed something amiss from his expression and chuckled, bumping his shoulder. "Did your wife apply the medicine?" he asked, lifting Chen Yongnian's hand to examine it closely. "It's tied so well, so meticulously. I wish I had a wife as virtuous as you!"
Chen Yongnian's smile widened, as if bathed in a spring breeze.
Xue Qing naturally noticed this as well.
She looked at the bandage on Chen Yongnian's hand and found it somewhat unsightly, so she wanted to remove it and replace it with a new one.
"Alright, stop arguing. My father needs to see him. Don't waste Yongnian's time."
Xue Qing shoved Li Wei, her face showing some displeasure.
Chen Yongnian nodded, thinking that he should finish as soon as possible so that he could go back and help Wan Qiqi with some things.
She was busy all day long and didn't get a proper rest.
Chen Yongnian chatted with Li Wei for a few minutes before walking into the main hall with Xue Qing.
Xue Jiang sat in the main seat, holding a cup of tea as if he was thinking about something. He didn't even move when the two people entered the room.
"Master." Chen Yongnian bowed to him.
Xue Jiang then looked up, nodded, and gestured for Chen Yongnian to sit down.
Looking up again, he saw Xue Qing's unhappy face and said, "What's wrong with you now?"
"No, I didn't lose my temper at all," Xue Qing said with a cold snort, pouting and looking unhappy.
Xue Jiang sighed softly, "If you have nothing to do, go to Hefeng Academy and find Tao Jing. Learn some etiquette from her and learn some characters so that you won't be looked down upon by your future in-laws."
Xue Qing scoffed: "My father is a martial arts instructor, why would I need to study and learn to read?"
"Then you should go out and learn a few moves from Li Wei and the others."
"I don't want to learn from those stinky men." Xue Qing looked outside, a hint of disgust in her expression.
Then, she looked at Chen Yongnian and said with a grin, "If Brother Yongnian teaches me, I'd be willing to learn."
"Nonsense!" Xue Jiang threw down the teacup with a loud bang.
The teacup spun around on the table a few times before finally settling at the edge, but the tea had spilled all over the table, making it look rather messy.
"Get out! I have something to say to Yongnian, and it's not something a girl like you should be listening to!"
Xue Qing snorted, pouted, put her hands on her hips, and walked out the door.
Xue Jiang added, "Close the door!"
