Chapter 33 Silence and Quarrel
As dusk fell, the chirping of insects began.
Firefly-like lights slowly illuminated Lotus Village, and all around was quiet except for whispers inside the thatched huts.
When Chen Yongnian and Chen Yongliang returned home, the square table in the main room was already full of dishes, and eight bowls of brown rice were laid out.
Chen Yongliang initially thought this was a simple job, but after seeing the meal, he felt as if he were being given a farewell, and a bitter feeling welled up in his heart.
Li Chongniang sat to one side with slightly red eyes, while Chen Yongxing sat beside her in silence.
Chen Yongnian glanced at them a few times, then left the main room and looked at Wan Qiqi and Wang Shi in the kitchen.
The two were busy with their work, chatting away, and seemed to be enjoying each other's company.
This scene had never occurred before, yet it was the one Chen Yongnian had been longing for every day.
Now, seeing it again, he felt a pang of sadness, unsure whether it was from being moved or from the pain of impending separation.
A gust of wind blew by, and the smoke from the stove rushed towards Wan Qiqi's face, mixed with the heat from the pot, making her cough and unable to open her eyes.
If Wan Qiqi hadn't taken medicine for several days, she would have really wondered if she hadn't recovered from the drowning.
This body is more delicate than imagined; she can't lift anything with her hands or carry anything on her shoulders—she's definitely the type of girl from a wealthy family.
After coughing several times, Wan Qiqi felt as if the spatula she was holding was being grabbed by another hand.
She opened her eyes and saw that Chen Yongnian was already in front of her.
"You flip it a couple of times, I'm going to take a break." Wan Qiqi handed over control of the spatula to Chen Yongnian and quickly left the kitchen.
The flowing wind blew for a while before she recovered from being choked.
She turned and stared blankly at the kitchen.
The flickering firelight from the stove illuminated two busy figures, revealing the expressions on their faces.
Chen Yongnian's faint sadness and Wang Shi's reluctance were all reflected in Wan Qiqi's eyes.
During this time, she tried to accept all of this, but she always felt like an outsider.
She sees things too clearly, and everything she does is rational, including her choice regarding this pandemic.
She forgot that Chen Yongnian was her husband and the father of her two children. If something really happened, her children would be fatherless from now on.
She forgot that Chen Yongnian was Wang's son. Having experienced the devastation of the plague, how painful it would be for her to send her son into the midst of people infected with the plague and let him feel the pain of the plague again.
She forgot that Chen Yongliang was still young, only 15 years old, a minor in modern times, and still a student, but now he had to risk infection to fight the plague.
Facing her loved ones who were about to be infected with the plague, she never felt distressed, believing that everything was for the purpose of defeating the plague.
A moment later, Chen Yongnian called out, "Wife, should we take it out of the pot now?"
"Yes, just serve it!" Wan Qiqi replied casually, tacitly accepting that Chen Yongnian called her "wife"!
The last dish was cooked, and the family sat neatly in the main room. By the dim light of the oil lamp, they could see that the evening's meal was very plentiful.
Everyone sat down, but only Wan Qiqi was eating with her two children; the others watched without touching their chopsticks.
Wan Qiqi glanced around, her gaze settling on Li Chongniang. "If you don't eat, the baby in your belly will have to. You're almost six months along, aren't you? All the doctors are in the epidemic area; what if something happens to you..."
She paused deliberately before finishing her sentence, then picked up some food and placed it in Li Chongniang's bowl.
Li Chongniang was still angry and didn't want to pay attention to Wan Qiqi, but she also felt that what Wan Qiqi said was right.
Despite my anger, I can't let my unborn child go hungry, and I can't put myself in danger.
Thinking it over, she disregarded etiquette and picked up her chopsticks to eat.
Madam Wang sighed, "Eat up! Eat your fill. I'll prepare some food later, you can take it in and eat."
Chen Yongliang hurriedly said, "Mother, you don't need to worry. Chen Lizheng said that someone will take care of the food."
"There are too many wolves and not enough meat, what can you possibly eat?" Wan Qiqi didn't even lift her eyelids. "Right now, there's both famine and plague. It's already a blessing if you can get rice gruel inside!"
Chen Yongliang pursed his lips and lowered his head.
He just wanted his mother to rest more and not to overwork, but why did his sister-in-law say these things? Isn't this just making his mother worry?
Chen Yongnian continued Wan Qiqi's words, "The village head said that someone can deliver food to the house every two days."
"Let's eat first, and we'll talk after we finish eating." Wan Qiqi knew that everyone's feelings were complicated right now, and so was hers. She didn't want to die more than anyone else.
However, many things in ancient times were backward, and we could only change them by relying on what we already had.
She has already redeemed some supplies at the mall so that she can stop the infection if anyone in her family shows signs of infection. She will also try to add the medicine to the food that Chen Yongnian and Chen Yongliang brought to boost their immunity.
Although everyone had mixed feelings, the meal was still relatively peaceful.
The situation at Dazhuang's house in Xilin Village was not ideal, and a big argument broke out.
"Lin Dazhuang, if you dare to go, I'll kill myself right here today!"
"Go ahead and run me! Even if you kill yourself, I'm going!"
Lin Dazhuang and his father, Lin Youtian, were having a major argument.
Her sister, Lin Zhaodi, and her mother, Qian, each grabbed one of them and separated them.
After calming down, the two started arguing again before they could even exchange two words.
"That's enough! Can you please stop arguing? Fine, I'll just die!" Madam Qian plopped down on the ground, tears streaming down her face. "If you all die, I won't live either!"
The two of them gradually calmed down.
Lin Youtian stepped forward, intending to help his wife up, but he missed, leaving her hands dangling in mid-air.
He watched as his son helped Qian up, then pouted, "Wife, Dazhuang is our only son. You don't want him to go and help out, do you? That place is full of people infected with the plague. If he gets infected too, how will we survive!"
