Chapter 514 Clues
"Father, where did Mother go?"
An'an looked up at Chen Yongnian, wanting him to give her an answer.
Chen Yongnian paused as he ladled soup, nearly spilling it onto the table. He forced a smile and said, "Mother has gone to the county for some business. She'll be back in a few days."
"Father, why did I hear people say that Mother was arrested by the government? Aren't you a government official? Why did they arrest Mother?" Pingping asked with a frown, as if he wouldn't give up until the other party gave a definite answer.
Hearing Pingping's question, the others in the courtyard couldn't help but sigh.
As expected, older people are harder to fool and know more.
“Your mother was just asked to ask some questions, it’s nothing serious, otherwise your father wouldn’t be sitting here.” Chen Yongnian reached out and patted the two little ones’ heads, saying, “Don’t worry, I guarantee you will see your mother exactly as she was.”
"Really?" Pingping asked doubtfully.
"Father, are you really not just trying to fool us?" An'an asked doubtfully.
"When have you ever seen your father lie to you?" Chen Yongnian asked.
Both little ones shook their heads in unison.
Mother liked to deceive them, but Father always kept his word.
The two little ones then began to believe it and continued eating with their heads down.
After dinner, Chen Yongnian coaxed his two little ones to sleep, but he couldn't fall asleep himself.
Next door, Chen Yongliang also couldn't sleep.
The two sat together, staring blankly at each other.
Just then, footsteps came from the stairwell, and the two of them looked over at the same time.
Wu Gousheng originally intended to go find Chen Yongnian, but when he passed by Chen Yongliang's room, he found that the two of them were actually there. He quickly went in and closed the door.
"We just received news that Miss Tao has been taken back to the Tao family by Headman Tao."
Upon hearing this, Chen Yongliang breathed a sigh of relief and pressed on, "Have you found out any news about your sister-in-law?"
Wu Gousheng shook his head, looking somewhat disappointed.
“The fact that Miss Tao is back shows that this matter is not serious. It’s just that the government is holding her captive and is unwilling to release her,” Chen Yongnian said, appearing very calm. “It’s a good thing that Miss Tao was implicated and has been brought back now. At least my wife won’t worry.”
"But what about our sister-in-law? Can we find a way to get her released?" Chen Yongliang asked.
“She’s the owner of the girls’ school and is considered the main culprit. Getting the magistrate to agree to release her won’t be easy.” Chen Yongnian hadn’t been in the county government for long, but he knew the officials there fairly well.
He knew very well that both Fang Ziming and Xie Xing were waiting for the other's reaction.
The government would never approve of a girls' school, lest it give them ammunition for criticism later.
If the other party decides to release Wan Qiqi, then the other party can use this as grounds to file a complaint against the other party.
“We can’t just sit here and wait to die,” Wu Gousheng said seriously. “Because of Sister Qi’s matter, Xinglong Restaurant’s business has been greatly reduced today. If Sister Qi stays closed for a few more days, it will probably be detrimental to the restaurant’s business.”
“That’s right!” Chen Yongliang replied, “Not to mention whether customers from all directions will use this to steal customers, even the customers who come to the store, talking about Sister-in-law being arrested, will have a bad influence on their own people.”
Chen Yongnian agreed with what the two said and asked, "Gousheng, did you notice anything unusual when you went to school with your wife?"
“Something’s wrong?” Wu Gousheng tried hard to recall, then said, “No.”
Then, he suddenly remembered something and said, "There isn't one at the girls' school, but at Hefeng Academy, I heard that many people oppose this, and it seems that some are even targeting Pingping."
Chen Yongnian frowned and said, "Pingping shouldn't go to the academy for the next two days. You take him and An'an to the martial arts school to play. We'll talk about it again when things calm down."
Books can be read again, but children must not be hurt.
Wu Gousheng nodded and said, "The owner of the general store next to the restaurant, Mr. Yang, also seems to be very opposed to girls studying. Could we start by talking to him?"
Chen Yongnian pondered for a moment and said, "Gousheng will take care of the two children, Yongliang will stabilize the restaurant business, and I'll go investigate!"
Once the three of them decided what they would mainly do, they immediately got to work the next day.
Chen Yongnian strolled around the street for a while, then stepped into the grocery store next door.
"Welcome, sir. What would you like to buy?" Boss Yang's face broke into a bright smile, but it froze when he saw who it was.
Then, with a rather unfriendly expression, he asked, "I wonder what brings you here, Chen Guannian?"
"Just browsing," Chen Yongnian replied, casually picking up a small trinket from the counter and examining it closely, as if he were truly just looking at it casually.
Mr. Yang put the items back and said coldly, "Guan Nian Chen doesn't need to come here to investigate. The matter of the report has nothing to do with me."
Chen Yongnian tossed the trinket into Boss Yang's hand, a faint smile curving his lips, and said, "Boss Yang, do you mean you know who this is related to?"
"So what if I know? So what if I don't?" Boss Yang put away his things, looked directly at Chen Yongnian and said, "Women's education is a joke, it's a mistake. There are thousands of people who oppose it, but does Manager Chen have to go and find them one by one?"
“I won’t look for anyone else. I’ll only look for the people involved in the report.” Chen Yongnian looked up at him, his expression serious. “I don’t care what others think or whether they object. For me, all I want is for my wife to return safely so that my child can have peace of mind.”
Boss Yang looked at Chen Yongnian, seemingly somewhat surprised.
His resistance to Chen Yongnian was not as obvious as before. He said, "Since you knew there would be problems, why didn't Chen Yongnian properly discipline and restrain his wife in the past? If she could have worked at home like an ordinary woman, how could this situation have occurred, and how could she have been arrested by the government?"
